[1] Lawless 1
"Please, I swear I did not do it, I have never touched that substance in my life, please you have to believe me, there has been some mistake..."Sir, I'd suggest you stay quiet," said the cop whilst locking up the handcuffs and urging Jace to move. "I know my son," the boy's mother cried from behind. She didn't know whether to believe that Jace tried to smuggle in a hard substance into the state or not, but still she didn't want anything to happen to him."He will never do that, I beg you check the cameras, someone must have snuck it into his bag..."Mam, please stay back," another cop ordered her, his voice firm and his expression fierce. He couldn't care less about her age, fear or anxiety, he had a job to do, and it'll certainly pay him well to catch a smuggler."He is my son," she protested, tears tickling down her cheeks,"Please don't hurt my son I beg you, he didn't do it... I can swear. " Before she could finish her statement, the cops had forced Jace into the van and closed
[2] Lawless 2
Within a few minutes, Jace found himself in an empty cell, locked behind metal bars and heavy padlocks. With his fingers clutched to the bar, and his head laid low, Jace let out a sigh in frustration. He wanted to cry, but for some reason, his tears were dried out; every minute felt like a ticking bomb, counting down to his public execution. He didn't know who to blame, himself, his boss, God, or the devil? Who was responsible for his tortured lifetime? Jace was educated to a high school level, but never got a chance to get into college. He spent most of his time working for his boss at a local bar near their home until Tristan Coleman launched a scholarship program. He had taken the online exam which cost him and his mother a fortune, and passed after sleepless nights of studying. Finally, his mother put her earnings together to purchase a plane ticket to send him overseas for the program, only for him to end up in a cell without ever leaving the state. Jace looked forward to thi

"Can I speak to my mother, at least?" Jace requested, his body shaking with fear. He was covered in cold sweat, his clothes drenched and his heart throbbing inside his chest."For the last time, please?" He begged, but the chief did not respond. Rather, he stared at Jace from head to toe, a menacing grimace plastered on his face. It felt as though he derived pleasure in executing victims, so much that he'd do it without a court order."You know," he began, lowering his gun,"I would have loved to hear you out, but I won't... You know why? Because folks like you don't give me money."" ?? ""It's true," he shrugged, not a hint of empathy in his tone."If you were the son of a rich man, certainly he'd pay bail for you, but clearly you are a nobody, and that's the problem. There are already enough people like you in this state."He paused, grabbing Jace by the chin and shifting his face so their eyes interlocked."And as for your mom, do you want her to watch you die? Don't you think it'

"Protein shake?" Jace asked, raising a brow in confusion, he couldn't tell what the system meant by that statement, and he genuinely did care to know. All that mattered to him at that moment was to fight these thugs, save his mother and humiliate the greedy cop; every other thing was secondary. He wasn't exactly terrified by their body build; rather, he was just baffled because most street gang members that he knew didn't look so good.He also wasn't afraid of going up against them in a fight, because he had been targeted and attacked numerous times by these kinds of hoodlums and made it out alive by defending himself. So he believed that three thugs were nothing compared to those attacks consisting of five to seven members. As Jace waited impatiently for the right moment to attack, his eyes glanced at the television screen, and he rolled his eyes in disdain."They must put up my picture everywhere now huh?" He whispered under his breath and adjusted his dark shades before sipping f

Jace assumed that he might feel a surge of electric current run through his veins, but he felt nothing, not even a tingling sensation to indicate that his strength had increased by two per cent.'Well, it's up to me now," he thought, and with a spirit of determination, flung the member that was directly on top of him to the ground.Soon he was back on his feet, but the other two tried to hold him down. However, he was quick to avoid them by leaping onto a nearby table, scattering the mugs, bottles and rumpling the fabric used as tablecloths. At this point, a lot of customers started to leave, while a few stayed back to watch the scene, some even holding onto their bottles and cheering the contenders on."You fools!" Jace mumbled, as one of his attackers jumped onto the table with him. And in an attempt to fight him off, they both crashed down to the ground; but still, Jace had the upper hand.He punched his nose, breaking the bones and left him bleeding without mercy, just in time bef
[7] What you must say
"I..."You don't have to say anything, sir." The man cut Jace off before he could speak."Just come with us and I will take you wherever you need."Jace was too stunned to move, even though this reward would only last twenty-four hours, it felt too real and overwhelming. "I am the governor's son?" He pondered, it was just too much to wrap his head around."Yes, please come with us, we need to get you to the station immediately." At these words, Jace snapped back to reality, his mind retuning to his mother for a second. It was at this point that he realised why the system rewarded him this way."Now it makes sense," he thought,"The chief has the highest authority in rank, but the governor is above him, having the power to withdraw that position and reduce him to nothing."Jace marvelled at the realisation, and even though his moral consciousness pleaded otherwise, he was consumed by a desire to exert his revenge."Alright," he said, getting on his feet and dusting the dirt off his

As soon as the chief walked out of the hallway, another officer arrived at the cell almost immediately with keys dangling from his left finger. He unlocked Jace's mother's cell and ushered her out with a stern look."Just do what he tells you, and you'll be fine," he said, taking the handcuffs from her wrist. "Please... help me," she cut him off, her tone laced with vulnerability and fear,"Jace is all I have left, and I know he didn't do anything. Please let me go and look for him, I beg you.""There is nothing I can do," replied the cop,"You'll have to meet the governor's son, maybe you can beg him. If he is kind enough, maybe he will order the chief to let you go."Her face fell in disappointment as she wiped the tears off with the back of her hand, she took a deep breath and tried to fix her messed up hair. She would do anything to save her son, even if it meant doing what the greedy chief said she should. At this point, anything was worth trying.Meanwhile, outside the police s
[9] A slap across the cheek
The sight of his mother in handcuffs sent a chill down Jace's spine, igniting a rage deep within him. How could this be happening? She was innocent, caught in a web of lies spun by those who should protect her. As she was led closer, Jace's heart sank to the bottom as he took in the terrible evidence of her mistreatment, her clothes were torn, bruises on her arms and face, and her hair was a mess, even though it appeared that she had tried to do a quick fix.Without a second thought, Jace rushed toward her. “Who did this to you?” he demanded, fury coating his voice like venom. His mother hesitated; she was overwhelmed by the presence of the officers and the imposing man in a suit, whom she assumed to be the governor's son. The Chief's silence also loomed over them like a dark cloud, heavy with unspoken truths she couldn’t fathom. She feared that whatever she said out here might either get her into more trouble with the Chief or save their lives. It was a fifty-fifty chance, so she

Seated in the car, Jace was yet to be satisfied. Despite leaving the chief speechless with his words and actions, he couldn't shake off the feeling that he could have done much more. He wished to have instructed the soldiers to beat him up, to bruise his nose and make sure he bled. He wanted to put the chief in the same near-death situation that the chief had put him in. But it was too late to go back now. "Getting him fired is enough," he thought, adjusting in his seat and securing the seat belt that he hadn't fastened properly. Then, he glanced at his mother, the composed yet confused young lady sat quietly, resting her head on the window with her eyes wide open. She sighed at intervals and sometimes appeared like she had something to say. "I know what you are thinking," Jace uttered, breaking the awkward silence, "How did all this come to be?" His mother nodded, without lifting her eyes, "So is it true?" She asked, taking Jace by surprise, "Did you really try to... "Mom,"
