"Hmm, where are you now?" Shane-Leo inquired, his voice crackling through the speaker of Mr. Mirano's phone.

"On my way home," Mr. Mirano replied, his voice holding a tired note.

"Son!" Mrs. Mirano's urgent cry cut through the hum of the car's engine, her voice startling him.

"Mum?" Shane-Leo called in a whisper, the surprise evident in his tone. "Is that mum?"
