Chapter 6: Cracks in the Foundation

Grace looked down at the papers he had put on the table, and glanced at Liam with a worried expression.

“What is this? And why do you look so troubled, dear?” 

Liam had always known Grace as a reasonable woman, who treated him with real kindness over the years. 

He believed she would listen carefully and help him mediate the divorce. And so, with a heavy heart, he prepared to speak the painful truth. 

“Grace… one of the twins is not biologically mine. You know that I have raised both girls with all my heart. But the DNA test shows that only one is biologically related to me, while the other—”

“How can you say such a terrible thing!?”

Grace’s face was twisted with anger as she cut him off, looking at him with disbelief. 

“How dare you say that about my daughter? Chloe loves you, and everyone in the family knows how devoted she is to you and the children. She even went against the family elders to marry you! Liam, you must be out of your mind to accuse her of cheating like this!”

Liam felt the anger returning to its familiar place in his chest. The betrayal he had been carrying for days burned hotter now, that even Grace was rejecting the truth so quickly.

“I am not believing rumors!” 

He shouted back, his face red with anger. “I have solid evidence, just look at these results carefully!”

He thrust the paternity test papers closer to her. Grace took them again, her hands shaking slightly as she adjusted her glasses. 

“I did not believe it at first either,” Liam continued, “When I first saw the results in my office, I thought there must be some mistake. So I went to multiple different agencies. But every single lab gave the same exact conclusion. One of the girls matches my DNA, the other does not. There is no error possible.”

Grace’s expression grew serious as she studied the papers. She looked up at Liam’s face, reading the deep hurt and exhaustion in his eyes. 

The room fell quiet as nobody spoke up, except for the soft ticking of the clock.

“See, now you don't know what to say either, right?” Liam gave a bitter smile. “That’s okay, I don't want any sympathy. And as a matter of fact, I already discussed this with Chloe.”

“And what did she say when you showed her these results?”

Liam let out a heavy sigh, “She refused to admit that she cheated on me, and then told me I was basically worthless without her in my life. She called the papers fake, but the truth is right there in black and white, Grace. There is no grey area to this, no margin for error or manipulation. Science does not lie.”

When he raised his head, his pleading eyes met Grace’s conflicted ones.

“Please, help me get justice. This is still a secret, I haven't told anyone else apart from you. I came to you, because I trust you. Please talk some sense into your daughter. Make her face the truth so we can end this marriage cleanly.”

Grace’s face hardened. She shook her head firmly and began defending Chloe without hesitation.

“Liam, look, no matter what those papers say, I know my daughter best. My Chloe would never do something so shameful, she is a proud and proper woman. She would never betray her marriage, or bring another man’s child into your family. You must have made some kind of mistake in the testing process, or perhaps someone is trying to create trouble for our family. Even if you bring a hundred tests like this, my heart will never believe she can commit such a huge sin.”

Liam felt anxiety spreading through his body. His heart started beating faster. Why was Grace defending Chloe so strongly even after seeing the clear evidence? Even after knowing that the reports can't be fake, she was refusing to even consider them?

A cloud of suspicion began to grow in his mind. What if his mother-in-law already knew the truth? What if she had known about Chloe's affair for a long time, and that's why she was so calm, while still choosing to protect her daughter, no matter what?

Had he made the wrong decision by coming here?
