Water dripped from Ethan's shirt. Little by little, it soaked the seats and floor of the car. While driving, the mysterious man's eyes occasionally looked at Ethan from the center rearview mirror.
The mysterious man finally spoke up. “Mr. Ethan, my name is Piers Reaggan. I am your subordinate, Mr. Ethan. However, you left the organization when I just came in.”
Ethan was silent while glancing into Piers' eyes. Ethan's gaze made Piers avert his eyes. It seemed like he felt uncomfortable when their eyes met.
No wonder Ethan felt he had seen this man. It turns out that he was a former member of the Hunters organization. That happened three years ago, right before Ethan married Thalia Blake. Since getting married, Ethan has cut off contact with the organization. Even in these 3 years Ethan has not dealt with the Dark Beings and has only focused on maintaining the barrier at the Blake family residence.
Ethan turned his gaze back out the window. “It turns out you're a former member of mine.”
Piers nodded. “That's right, Mr. Ethan. I really admire your abilities and achievements. Your skills with your pistol, dagger, and seal magic are beyond great. You have even defeated hundreds of Dark Beings and monsters by yourself. Becoming your member is my goal in entering the Hunters organization.”
Ethan thought, if he was a member back then, it meant that Piers was a person who had a great ability to become a Demon Hunter. The division led by Ethan used to be a division that often went into the underworld that was never seen by humans. Searching for information and fighting with creatures beyond reason. In that world, being strong and can using magic is not enough. A new member could die anytime.
Surviving 3 years in that division was something very miraculous. Not just anyone could do it. Piers must have a very great thing in using special abilities to be able to survive in that underworld.
Piers glanced back at the center rearview mirror. “Mr. Ethan, we will head to the Hunters base in the middle of the city. I'm sure everyone there will be happy to welcome the return of a general--”
“I'm not returning to the Hunters organization.” Ethan immediately cut off Piers' speech. His eyes sharply stared at the man in the rearview mirror. “Just take me to the Hunters base. I will take my gear and money. Nothing more.”
Piers took a deep breath. He did not expect this answer he would get after he found Ethan after all this time. From what Piers knows, Ethan is a living legend like no other. He had gone on hundreds of missions into the underworld filled with monsters and creatures beyond reason, but he was still able to live even though he was very young at the time. His analytical skills are high. Moreover, supported by his ability to use daggers and revolvers. Taking out monsters became easy for him.
Piers ventured. “Alright, I'll take you to the base. Your money is there, but it's a different amount now. Do you remember the millions of dollars you left back then? You took stocks from real estate and security. Now those stocks have increased in value many times over in 3 years. This way, you may not have to worry about your life. Even if you sleep in a luxury hotel for the rest of your life.”
Ethan smiled a little. That was indeed the reason he invested the money he earned from the organization. He wanted to make the money multiply and eventually he could enjoy it together with Thalia. Too bad, Thalia had thrown it away without Thalia knowing what Ethan had.
When thinking about money, he remembered something. “How is my sister doing at the orphanage? Didn't I commission Morrison to give her some of my shares?”
Piers nodded. “That's right, Mr. Ethan. You had commissioned Morrison to do that. However, when we searched for your sister's whereabouts, it turned out that she was no longer in this town. And Morrison died shortly after you left the organization.”
Ethan was silent. His forehead wrinkled because as Ethan recalled, 8 years ago his sister was 14 years old. She was still in the orphanage. During her training and entry into the Hunter organization, Ethan had not given her any news so that she would not get into trouble. Ethan intended to give Eva Hunter, her sister, a half of his possessions so that she could be happy. Then, after Ethan retired, they would just have to live peacefully in this world. However, the news that his sister was leaving town left Ethan disappointed.
Piers saw how disappointed Ethan's face was. He smiled slightly. “There's no need to be disappointed, Mr. Ethan. We found Miss Eva Hunter in the city of Greenhaven, a city safe from creatures of darkness. A Demon Hunter named Nolan Sanders has already delivered your message to Miss Eva.”
Ethan immediately breathed a sigh of relief. It turned out that his sister was not in danger. Next time he would try to meet her. Although Eva would surely hate him for leaving her in the orphanage without any news for eight years.
Piers swallowed. “Are you sure you don't want to return to lead the remaining Hunters troops now, Mr. Ethan? You are the best general the Hunters have ever had.”
Ethan's attention returned to Piers' face in the rearview mirror. He narrowed his eyes. There was an unusual vibration on the young man's face. “Tell me the reason why I have to listen to you.”
Piers took another deep breath. “In the past three years, the activities of the creatures of darkness have increased rapidly. Already about 100 more people were recruited into the Hunters organization, but they all died quickly. And we have difficulty dealing with the development of those creatures.”
Ethan looked away. “Didn't they find a better general? Sounds like it's not just the Hunters organization.”
Piers fell silent after hearing that remark. He could not deny that indeed the current general in charge did not have strong adaptability like Ethan. Although the general was great, but she could not keep up with how the development of the creatures of darkness.
A few minutes later they stopped at a building that had a wire fence. The area was quite large and the gate was guarded by two people with guns. This place looked like it was a state secret.
After Piers spoke to the two guards, the gate was finally opened and the car entered the underground parking lot.
Piers got out of his car and opened the door for Ethan. Ethan got out and breathed in the air of the place. It reminded him of the old days when he was still in this organization. “It still smells the same.”
“Follow me, Mr. Ethan.” Piers then led Ethan to a room that once belonged to Ethan. There, all of Ethan's belongings were stored. Starting from clothes, access cards, and also books. There was only one thing that wasn't there, the weapon he used to eradicate the creatures of darkness.
Ethan quickly put on dry clothes, then he walked out of the room carrying a large bag containing all the books he had. One of the books was a gift from Volland Blake, Thalia's grandfather who had become Ethan's mentor and changed his life.
Piers looked at that with his eyebrows arched downward. “You have no intention of staying here at all. Are you going to leave the Hunters organization completely?”
Ethan glanced at Piers. “Not without my dagger and revolver.”
Piers exhaled. “Both weapons are in the hands of General Cornellia Bridgit ... you must meet her to get your weapons back.”
Ethan narrowed his eyes slightly. A name he had never heard before was now serving as a general. What's more, it was a woman's name. Who was she?
“Take me to see that woman!”

Freya brought a glass of Ginger Ale to Ben who had been pacing restlessly by the window. Slowly, she placed the drink on the table before turning to her father. However, Ben remained glued to the windowpane, his eyes full of anxiety as if hoping Ethan would appear at any moment. The wound on his arm was still gaping, but the worry in his chest far outweighed the pain.Freya stepped closer, hesitating for a moment before gently touching Ben's shoulder. “Dad, calm down. Mr. Ethan will help you,” she said, trying to channel a bit of calm through her words. However, Ben just shook his head, his breathing heavy as if he was holding something inside his chest. “You don't know what's in there, Freya,” his voice was lower, almost a murmur. “Those Wendigo's are different than before.”Ben clenched his hands, his jaw hardening as his mind drifted back to what he'd seen in the mine. He looked back at the window, his gaze filled with a fear he couldn't hide. “Lord Ethan is in a life-and-death sta

Ethan raised his revolver quickly, the barrel aimed right at the head of the green Wendigo still bound in chains. But something wasn't right.Ethan's eyes widened, his chest tightened. The Wendigo's right hand that should have vanished... reappeared. The flesh crawled, sticking to itself like an upside-down wound. The white bone protruded first, followed by the rapidly spreading muscle fibers. The black blood that should have flowed out was now reabsorbed, as if there had never been a wound there.Ethan gritted his teeth, his breath hitching. His fingers tightened on the revolver's handle, almost pulling the trigger involuntarily. A disgusting sound rang out as the Wendigo's skin fused back together. And within seconds... his hand was back in one piece.“No way...”Ethan's voice was almost a whisper. His eyes were still glued to the creature, his brain trying to digest something that shouldn't have happened. The wendigo could regenerate.Without thinking, Ethan pulled the trigger. Two

“A Demon Hunter like you? How could...,” Ben's words trailed off. He knew how strong Ethan was. He had seen it himself-how this man stood unwavering despite being shotgunned, how he kept moving forward despite being thrown molotovs. But his eyes were now fixed on something different. The blood seeping from Ethan's stomach. Ben's breath caught. Slowly, he raised his gaze, looking directly into Ethan's face. There was something in the man's eyes-something Ben had never seen before. Doubt. “You... who can't be pierced by bullets, who doesn't even falter in fire... could be hurt by that thing?”Ethan was silent. His jaw hardened slightly. He hated this fact, but he knew there was no point in denying it. Slowly, he nodded.Ben swallowed. If Ethan could get hurt, then... what could anyone else do?Ethan took a deep breath. His voice was low, but there was something in it-weight, certainty, and an inviolable truth. “You need to get out.”Ben remained silent. Inside his chest, a battle betwee

His eyebrows rose, his voice sounding slightly rushed. “Mr. Ethan, let's take him out. Put him in the room with Jared. We can find an antidote for them!”Ethan didn't answer right away. With a quick movement, he stood up and grabbed Ben by the collar, pulling him a little closer. His gaze dropped to the man's hand-a shabby bandage of cloth covering a wound that should have been properly treated.“Your hand...” His voice was low, almost a threatening whisper. His crimson eyes stared at the wound like they wanted to pierce the cloth that wrapped it.Ethan took a deep breath, holding back his annoyance. “I told you, get out of this cave.”Ben swallowed, his left hand trembling slightly as he reached under his shirt and pulled out a flare gun. The wendigo groaned, its hoarse voice echoing through the air, almost like a fusion of a wolf's howl and a tortured human scream. Its thin, towering body bent over slightly, its long claws gripping the wet ground. He could not see clearly, but he did not need to. Its black nostrils flared, inhaling the air deeply, searching for traces of scent in the surroundings. The smell of gunpowder... sharp, burning his sense of smell. It mixed with the sweat and blood of the human in front of him-not prey, but a threat. It's head turned quickly towards Ethan, as if he had just realized something.
