Chapter 44

Ethan watched the elevator doors close, then turned back to Claire with a lazy smile.

"She's probably going to get some work done," he said casually. "Wouldn't surprise me if she decided to get breast implants while she's at it."

Chapter 52By the time Ethan and Lizzy returned to their apartment building, it was already approaching dawn.Neither of them had expected the visit to the veterinary clinic to take so long.Fortunately, Duke had received the treatment he needed. After examining the Labrador and reviewing his condition, the veterinarian had confirmed that Duke was suffering from internal injuries caused by blunt-force trauma. The injuries were serious enough to require immediate attention, but the doctor was optimistic about his chances of recovery. However, Duke couldn't return home just yet.The veterinarian wanted to keep him under observation for a few days to ensure there were no complications."He's stable for now," the doctor had explained. "But I strongly recommend leaving him here until we're satisfied that he's recovering properly."Lizzy had looked worried."How long will that take?""At least a couple of days. We'll monitor him closely and let you know when he's ready to go home.""And he'

Chapter 51 Ethan returned to the living room, dressed in black jeans, a fitted black singlet, and a dark coat. His outfit was simple, without any expensive accessories or flashy designer labels. Despite having hundred million dollars to his name, Ethan had never developed the habit of dressing extravagantly. He preferred comfortable clothes that allowed him to move freely. After adjusting his coat, he glanced toward the sofa."All right, Lizzy. Let's go."There was no response.Ethan frowned, the sofa was empty.Duke was still lying on the cushions, but Lizzy was nowhere to be seen. "Where did she go?"He looked toward the kitchen, then the hallway leading to the bathroom.Had she left? That seemed unlikely. Her dog was still here, and she had been practically begging him for money only a few minutes earlier."Lizzy?"Before he could call again, a pair of soft hands suddenly slid across his chest from behind.Ethan stiffened.A familiar feminine fragrance reached his nose, and a wom

Chapter 50 "What else do you want me to tell you?" she asked, her voice trembling. "I've already explained everything. Duke is seriously injured, and the animal hospital said he needs treatment. What more do you want to hear?" Lizzy stared at Ethan, struggling to keep her expression under control. Ethan remained silent, jis calm expression only made her more nervous. He had asked to see Duke's medical records, and that was the one thing Lizzy couldn't afford to show him. The actual cost of Duke's treatment was less than four thousand dollars. It was still a substantial amount of money, but nowhere near the hundred thousand she'd demanded. If Ethan saw the report, he would immediately realize that something was wrong. And then what? How was she supposed to explain the remaining ninety-six thousand dollars? Should she tell him that she owed money to a local gang because she'd been buying drugs on credit? Should she admit that the men she'd been dealing with had threatened her
