The beast came at midnight.

Cris was meditating when the warning came. Not from the system. From the pendant. It burned against his chest, a sudden heat that snapped his eyes open.

"Something is coming. Something old."

He stepped outside. The Inner Sect was silent. Disciples slept. Elders meditated. No one else felt it.

But Cris did. A pull. Deep in his chest. North. Toward the Ten Thousand Beast Forest.

He walked.

---

The forest was different at night. The silver leaves glowed. The black bark pulsed. The air was thick with qi—so thick Cris could taste it.

He followed the pull. Past the clearing where he had devoured the Flame Wolf. Past the black mountain that was no longer there. Deeper. Into parts of the forest no disciple dared enter.

The trees grew twisted. The ground was soft with ancient rot. Bones littered the path—beast bones. Human bones. Older than the sect. Older than the kingdom.

Then he found it.

A cave. Massive. Carved into the base of a cliff. The entrance was ringed with symbols—the same symbols as the ring. The same symbols as the key.

"A vault. Sealed long ago."

Cris stepped inside.

The cave was a tomb.

A single chamber. A single occupant. A beast—massive, coiled, dead for centuries. Its scales were black. Its eyes were closed. Its body was the size of a house.

"A Void Serpent. Ancient. Extinct. This one was sealed here before the first emperor drew breath."

Cris approached. The serpent's chest was split open. Someone had been here before. Someone had taken something.

But they had left something behind.

At the center of the serpent's chest, nestled among ancient bones, a core. Black. Pulsing. Alive.

"An ancient beast core. The heart of a Void Serpent. Consume it. Gain its power."

Cris reached for the core. The moment his fingers touched it, the cave shook.

The serpent's eyes opened.

---

Cris jumped back. The serpent didn't move. Its body was dead. But its eyes—two massive black orbs—fixed on him.

"Not alive. A residual will. The beast's soul lingers."

The serpent spoke. Not with words. With feeling. A pressure in Cris's mind. Hunger. Rage. Fear.

"It wants to devour you. Devour it first."

Cris grabbed the core. He pressed it to his chest.

"Devour."

The core exploded.

Power flooded into him—vast, ancient, cold. His meridians screamed. His bones cracked. His vision went black.

"Foundation Establishment Eighth Layer. Ninth. Peak."

Pain. So much pain.

"Core Formation. Breakthrough."

Cris collapsed. His body was tearing itself apart. The serpent's will pressed against his mind, trying to consume him. Trying to take his body.

"Fight. Devour it. Or it devours you."

Cris screamed. Not in pain. In defiance.

He grabbed the serpent's will. Wrapped his own around it. Pulled.

"Devour."

The serpent's soul shattered. Its memories flooded into him. Its power. Its hunger. All of it.

"Core Formation First Layer. Congratulations. You are no longer Foundation Establishment."

Cris lay on the cave floor, gasping. His body was broken. His meridians were on fire. But he was alive.

And he was stronger.

"The serpent's memories. I can access them. It knew things. Ancient things."

"What things?"

"The Devourer. The Court. The war that sealed it. All of it."

Cris pushed himself up. His hands were steady. His mind was clear.

"Show me."

---

He saw.

Ten thousand years ago. The Devourer was not a monster. It was a weapon. Created by the first immortals to fight something worse. Something from beyond the heavens.

The Court betrayed them. Sealed the Devourer. Killed its creators. Erased them from history.

The war never ended. The thing from beyond was still coming. And the Court had spent ten thousand years preparing—not to fight it. To serve it.

"The Court is not the enemy," the system said. "They are the servants. The real enemy is something else. Something the Devourer was made to destroy."

Cris stood. The cave was silent. The serpent's body was dust.

"What is it? What's coming?"

"I don't know. The memories are fragmented. But the Devourer knew. That's why it was sealed. Not to protect the world from it. To protect it from the world. It was the only weapon that could stop what's coming."

Cris looked at the ring. "And now it's waking up."

"Piece by piece. You are its host. Its weapon. Its hope."

"Why didn't you tell me this before?"

"You weren't ready. You are still not ready. But you're closer."

Cris walked out of the cave. The sky was lightening. Dawn.

He had been gone all night. The Hollow would arrive in two days. And he had a new understanding.

The Court was not his enemy.

They were something worse.

---

Gunna was waiting for him when he returned.

"You look terrible," Gunna said.

"Thanks."

"Where were you?"

"Training."

Gunna looked at the blood on his robes. The dust in his hair. The red glow in his eyes.

"That's not training. That's war."

Cris said nothing.

Gunna sighed. "I found something. In the archives. About the Court."

Cris stopped. "What?"

"There's a record. Old. Sealed. About a weapon the immortals made. A furnace. A devourer." Gunna's voice dropped. "It says they didn't seal it because it was dangerous. They sealed it because it was the only thing that could stop the End."

Cris stared at him. "The End?"

"That's all it says. The rest is burned. But there's a name. At the bottom of the page."

"What name?"

Gunna handed him a scrap of paper. One word.

"Cris."

Cris's blood ran cold. "Where did you get this?"

"The archives. Under Elder Shen's private collection." Gunna's hands were shaking. "He's been hiding this. For years."

Cris crushed the paper. His ring burned. His pendant was cold.

"Elder Shen knows more than he says. He's been waiting for you. Not to use you. To stop you."

"Or to help me."

"Or to kill you when you become too dangerous."

Cris looked toward the elders' quarters. Elder Shen's window was dark.

"Two days until the Hollow arrives."

"Yes."

"Then we have two days to find out what Elder Shen really wants."

He walked toward the main hall.
