The wail of a thousand sirens cut through the heavy, stagnant air of the apartment complex, a discordant symphony of chaos that vibrated deep in Adriano’s marrow. He jolted upright, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The room was dark, lit only by the flickering, erratic pulse of the city lights outside his window.

"What the hell… is that the air raid sirens?" Adriano muttered, his voice raspy from sleep. He stumbled toward the window, his bare feet meeting the cold hardwood.

He didn't make it to the glass. Before he could reach the sill, a blinding, azure light erupted directly in front of his eyes. He shielded his face, stumbling back as a translucent interface hung in the air, defiant of the darkness.

[ SYSTEM INITIALIZING ]

[ BALANCE PROTOCOL: ACTIVE ]

[ CAPACITY: 0/5 ]

"Are you kidding me? Am I hallucinating? Is this some kind of prank?" Adriano backed away, his gaze darting around the small studio. "Hey! Anyone there? Is this a projection?"

He blinked, but the blue text remained, hovering like a ghost in his retinas.

"Adriano? You awake?" A sharp, urgent pounding echoed against his door. It was Mrs. Gable, his elderly neighbor from 4B. "Adriano, honey, please! The street… they’re tearing the cars apart! Something is wrong with everyone!"

He scrambled to the door, his hands trembling as he fumbled with the deadbolt. "Mrs. Gable? Stay back from the door! I’m opening it."

He threw the heavy wood frame open, revealing the hallway. It was absolute bedlam. The stairwell was choked with smoke, and further down, he could see the silhouette of a man or something that used to be a man shoving his way through the wall of the service elevator.

Mrs. Gable was huddled against his doorframe, clutching her shawl. Next to her, a young couple from down the hall, Leo and Sarah, stood shivering. They were followed by a terrified teenager named Jax who lived in the unit opposite him.

"Get inside! Everyone, just get inside!" Adriano shouted, his voice cracking.

"What is happening, kid? Tell us!" Leo yelled, dragging Sarah into the small entryway. "We heard screaming from the lobby, and then the power just died!"

"I don't know, just get in! Quickly!" Adriano pushed them all into his small studio apartment.

As the last of them, Jax, scrambled inside, Adriano moved to slam the door, but the blue interface shifted. It expanded, locking onto the four people standing in his living room.

[ BALANCE PROTOCOL DETECTED ]

[ TARGETS ACQUIRED: 4/5 ]

[ ESTABLISH SAFE ZONE? Y/N ]

"What the hell is that?" Jax pointed, his eyes wide as he stared at the floating text in front of Adriano. "Dude, what is that light?"

"I don't know," Adriano whispered, his breath hitching. "I think… I think this is why we're alive. Everyone, just stand still."

"Adriano, honey, what is going on?" Mrs. Gable asked, her voice trembling. "Is this… is this a bomb? Are we dying?"

"No, Mrs. Gable, just stay close to me," Adriano said, his heart racing. He focused on the flickering prompt. He felt a weird, magnetic tug in his gut, like a tether snapping into place. He tapped the 'Y'.

A dome of soft, golden light pulsed from his chest, washing over the room. It hit the walls and seemed to harden, muffling the chaotic screams from outside into a dull, distant hum.

"Whoa," Leo breathed, touching the air near the wall. "The sound… it stopped. It feels like the air is… different in here."

"Did you do this?" Sarah asked, looking at Adriano as if he were a monster. "How did you do this?"

"I'm just as lost as you are," Adriano said, wiping sweat from his forehead. "My head is spinning. It’s like a computer… it says we have a limit. I’ve only got room for five."

"Five?" Jax asked, looking around. "There’s us four, plus you. That’s five. What does that mean?"

"It means we’re safe, I guess," Adriano muttered. "At least until the system decides we aren't."

A thunderous, wet thud slammed against the door, followed by a guttural, inhuman screech. It was loud, wet, and hungry.

"Help! Please, someone help me! Open the door!" A woman’s voice frantic, sobbing, desperate erupted from the hallway. "They’re right behind me! Please, let me in!"

Adriano took a step toward the door, his hand reaching for the latch. "We have to let her in. She’s going to die out there."

"Wait, Adriano!" Leo grabbed his shoulder, pulling him back. "Look at that thing!"

He pointed to the interface, which had updated in red, jagged text.

[ CAPACITY: 4/5 ]

[ WARNING: CAPACITY LIMIT REACHED ]

[ PROHIBITION: ZONE INTEGRITY AT RISK. DO NOT ADMIT ADDITIONAL ENTITIES. ]

"No," Adriano hissed, staring at the message. "That's ridiculous. I'm not leaving someone to be slaughtered!"

"Adriano, listen to me," Sarah whispered, her face pale. "It says the integrity is at risk. If you open that door, what happens to us? What happens to the barrier?"

"I can't just let her die!" Adriano yelled, his voice echoing in the small, artificially silent room.

"Open it, open it!" the woman outside shrieked. A frantic scratching sound raked against the metal door, deep gouges appearing in the steel.

Adriano’s hand hovered over the deadbolt. His conscience warred with the primal, cold logic pulsing in his brain. The interface was insistent, a cold weight pressing against his consciousness, telling him that the moment he unlocked that door, the barrier would dissolve.

"Please!" the woman screamed. Then, her voice turned into a choked, bubbling gurgle. A heavy, sickening tearing sound followed.

"Adriano, don't," Mrs. Gable sobbed, clutching his arm. "Don't you dare."

The guilt was a physical ache, a searing heat in his throat. He looked at the four people behind him, the neighbors he’d known for years, the people who were now tethered to his very life force.

"I'm sorry," Adriano whispered, his voice dead.

He didn't open the door. He turned the deadbolt to the 'Locked' position, his knuckles turning white.

"We stay here," he said, his voice cold and hollow. "We don't open the door. We don't move."

"Is she… is she gone?" Jax whispered, staring at the door.

Adriano didn't answer. He couldn't. The sounds from the hallway had changed. The frantic screaming had ceased, replaced by a rhythmic, heavy thumping something massive was dragging itself down the hallway, sniffing at the doors.

Suddenly, the wall of the hallway and the structural concrete of the building began to crack. A massive, clawed appendage tore through the plaster, spilling dust and debris into the common area just inches from his own door. The barrier shuddered.

"Oh god," Sarah whimpered.

The wall groaned as the monster hammered against it, inching closer to the safety of the apartment. Adriano backed away, his eyes locked on the growing hole in the structure, the sound of tearing concrete vibrating through his very soul. The hunt had begun, and his sanctuary was only as strong as the system allowed.

The roar of the electrical discharge died down into a high-pitched whine that set Adriano’s teeth on edge. The air in the subway station was thick, tasting of copper and burnt ozone. His fingertips were numb, and a persistent, dull throb behind his eyes reminded him that he was pushing his body past its breaking point."Is it done?" Sofia asked, her voice barely a whisper. She stood close to him, her hand hovering near her blade, her eyes scanning the dark corridor. "Did you break it?"Adriano shook his head, his breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. "Not yet. I… I forced the system into a loop, but the Purge command is hardcoded. It’s overriding my input.""So we’re still dying," Leo said from the back, his voice rising

The blinding white light of the terminal’s final sequence receded, leaving Adriano gasping for air in the sudden, oppressive gloom of the subway station. The hum of the machine had died, replaced by the distant, rhythmic thudding of a thousand footsteps echoing through the tunnel."Did we do it?" Sofia choked out, dragging herself upright against a rusted pylon. "Is the sector clear?"Adriano stared at his interface. The blue light was erratic, strobing like a failing bulb. "It’s not finished. The upload hit ninety-nine percent, then locked. The terminal... it’s bricked, Sofia.""So we're sitting ducks," she spat, checking the magazine of her sidearm. "And that beacon on your belt is still singing."Adriano tore the device off his waist and hurled it into the darkness of the tunnel. It sparked against the concrete, a tiny, glowing ember in the abyss, but the sound of the approaching swarm didn't falter. It grew louder, more synchronized."We need to move," Adriano said, his voice tigh

The air in the subway station was thick with the ozone of the dead terminal. Adriano scrambled to his feet, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The boy—the intruder—stood ten paces away, his silhouette framed by the flickering lights of the abandoned tracks. His eyes were not glowing anymore, but they retained a predatory, crystalline clarity that sent shivers down Adriano’s spine."Who are you?" Adriano shouted, his voice cracking. "What do you mean, 'something worse'?"The boy didn't move. He simply tilted his head, his hands tucked deep into the pockets of his tattered jacket. "You broke the lock, Accountant. You thought you were saving the city by cutting the signal, but you just opened the cage.""I asked you a question!" She scanned the corridor with the cold, practiced intensity of a soldier. "For now. The Architect isn't showing its face, but that doesn't mean it isn't watching.""We can't just keep hiding in closets, Sofia," Adriano said, stepping out behind her. The floor felt wrong—slick and uneven. "The sync is coming. If we don't find that terminal, we’re part of the purge.""I know," she murmured, nudging him toward the emergency stairwell. "Stay low. The crimson light from the stranger’s interface bled into the hallway, casting long, jagged shadows that danced like daggers against the walls. Sofia hissed, her hand gripping his shoulder, her knuckles white. "Look at me. Keep your focus on the zone!""They have an interface," Adriano stammered, his chest heaving. "How is that possible? I thought I was the only one.""You aren't," the figure in the shadows called out, their voice vibrating with a metallic, synthesized distortion. "You’re just the first to be discarded."The hooded figure gestured, and the swarm of creatures surged forward."Adriano, do something!" Leo screamed from behind them, his voice bordering on a panic attack. "They’re coming! Close the door!""I can't!" Adriano yelled back, his vision swimming with white static.
