Sean read the message, took another bite of stir fry, and pulled out his own phone. A friend request from Chairman Drake was already sitting in his inbox. He accepted it.

Drake's first message arrived in under ten seconds. "Mr. Miles. I'm a businessman. I solve problems efficiently. Your snowmobile is the only functioning vehicle in a fifty mile radius. Transfer it to me voluntarily and I'll ensure your safety going forward. Refuse and I'll take it along with everything else you own."

The underground garage had never held this many people at once. Battery powered lanterns hung from the ceiling pipes in a crooked row, throwing pools of yellow light across a hundred and forty seven faces packed shoulder to shoulder between the concrete pillars.Danny stood on an overturned delivery crate at the front of the crowd, a bullhorn in one hand and a stack of papers in the other. Cora stood near the garage entrance with her rifle slung across her chest, her eyes moving methodically across the room, cataloging every face the way a soldier catalogs a battlefield."Settle down." Danny raised the bullhorn. "This is the first formal assembly of the Ridgewood Survivor Community. Everyone gets a voice tonight. Everyone gets a vote."The crowd murmured and shifted, breath fogging in the cold garage air. Sean stood off to the side, arms crossed, letting Danny run the show. He had learned long ago that a king who spoke too much sounded desperate. A king who let others speak for him so

"Because right now, in the eyes of that National Guard unit, Ridgewood is an unorganized mob being controlled by one dangerous man." Sean's voice sharpened with purpose. "I want them to arrive and find something completely different. An organized settlement with functioning governance, documented population, and legitimate leadership."Jessica watched him with an expression that was hard to place. Not admiration exactly. Something closer to reluctant recognition, the way one predator watches another execute a perfect strategy."You're going to make yourself their mayor." Jessica's voice was flat, but there was no mockery in it."I'm going to draft a formal community charter." Sean pulled a legal pad from the shelf and set it on the table, already sketching an outline in his head. "Positioning myself as the elected civilian leader of the Ridgewood Survivor Community. Building representatives sign it. Every resident who's benefited from the feudal system signs it. Every cured patient si

  • CHAPTER 61 PART 1

Jessica arrived at the basement gate two hours after midnight, her steps quicker than usual, her breath coming in short clouds that betrayed how fast she had walked despite the cold. Sean opened the gate before she even finished her knock sequence."You're early." He studied her face in the dim corridor light. "And you're not walking like someone who just delivered gossip.""Because it's not gossip." Jessica followed him into the debriefing room and sat down without removing her scarf, her hands still trembling slightly, though whether from cold or nerves Sean couldn't immediately tell. "Victor has a satellite radio. Stolen, I think, from one of the Syndicate soldiers who died at Building 8. He's been using it to contact a National Guard unit stationed forty miles south."Sean's expression didn't change, but something behind his eyes sharpened into focus. "How long has this been going on?""At least a week. Maybe longer." Jessica pulled the scarf loose from her neck. "I overheard him

Sean set the straightened pipe aside and wiped his hands on a rag. "Define normal, Cora. We're standing in a basement during an ice age apocalypse with mutated wolves upstairs and a virus that turns people into monsters. Normal left the building a long time ago.""I've watched you carry three hundred pound crates like they're empty boxes." Cora crossed her arms, unmoved by his deflection. "I've watched you hear things from across the building that I couldn't hear standing right next to the source. And now you just bent a steel pipe with your hands like it was a coat hanger."Sean looked at her for a long moment. He had told Karla the truth weeks ago, during the early gem trading days, because her legal mind needed to understand exactly what she was protecting. He had told Danny because Danny was the closest thing to a brother he had left in this frozen world. Cora had earned the same trust through six weeks of silent competence and zero betrayals."Sit down." Sean gestured toward an o

  • CHAPTER 60 PART 1

Danny posted the announcement through the building representative chain at nine in the morning. By nine fifteen, Sean's phone was already buzzing nonstop."Antiviral serum is officially available." Danny read the message he had drafted out loud, standing in the kitchen while Sean drank his coffee. "Price is five pounds of jade or equivalent gemstones per dose, plus one year of sworn labor service. Representatives, direct all inquiries to the trading post at Building 4's lobby."Sean nodded slowly, watching steam curl off his mug. "How fast do you think this spreads?""Given how scared everyone is of turning into a wolf's cousin?" Danny smirked. "Faster than the last blizzard."He was right. Within an hour, residents who had spent weeks hoarding canned food and ignoring their jewelry boxes were suddenly tearing through drawers, mattresses, and hidden floorboards, searching for anything with mineral value. A ring that had sat forgotten in a sock drawer since the wedding it came from sud

Danny stood between them, saying nothing, his eyes moving from Karla to Cora to Sean, waiting. He had learned weeks ago that when the room split like this, the only voice that mattered was Sean's.Sean looked at the three victims again. The woman on the middle cot had started shivering violently, her lips turning a faint shade of blue, her eyes rolling back slightly as the fever climbed. He thought about his previous life. He thought about all the people he had watched die from this exact virus, screaming, thrashing, turning into something that used to wear their face but no longer carried their soul. He thought about the value of a reputation built on more than fear."I'll provide the serum." Sean's voice was flat, final, giving no room for negotiation. "But not for free.""What's the price?" Dr. Voss asked cautiously."Each cured patient owes me one year of labor." Sean looked at each victim in turn. "Whatever I need. Guard duty, supply runs, construction, farming when we get greenh
