Chapter 21: The “Iron Cross” Faction – Part 1

The cold July wind blew across the walls of Nexus Territory, carrying the distant scent of smoke and burning flesh. Nine days had passed since Xander’s Class Evolution. The territory now breathed like a living organism—disciplined, hierarchical, and growing ever more powerful.

Eighty-seven loyal souls lived under the protection of the System-reinforced walls. They were no longer desperate survivors; they were subjects, soldiers, and workers. All of them bore a subtle blue mark on their left wrists—the seal of loyalty to the System Sovereign.

Xander Voss stood atop the southern wall, gazing out at the ruined skyline of Metro City. His imposing 1.96-meter frame looked as if carved from living marble. Sunlight glinted off the dense muscles of his shoulders and back, tracing every line defined by his dual genetic transformation. An ethereal crown of blue-gold energy hovered faintly above his head, visible only when he exerted his authority.

He wore lightweight black armor with gold accents—designed by Elena—that was functional, intimidating, and perfectly fitted to his sovereign physique.

"They’re organizing faster than I expected," Xander murmured, his eyes fixed on the smoke rising to the northwest.

Beside him, General Marcus Reed snapped a salute. The former soldier had risen to Level 21 thanks to Shared Experience. His posture was impeccable, his tactical uniform clean, and his gaze sharp.

"Scout reports confirm it, my Sovereign. Three major human factions control significant parts of the city. The most dangerous calls itself the Iron Cross. They have between 1,200 and 1,800 members, according to the refugees who arrived yesterday."

Lira Voss approached from the other side, her athletic frame clad in leather and lightweight chainmail. Her red hair was tied back in a high combat braid. She carried her compound bow as if it were an extension of herself.

"They aren't like the other bandit groups," she said, her voice serious. "Military discipline. Organized patrols. They say they possess a 'System' of their own. But something doesn't add up. Refugees speak of an artifact... a relic they found in the wreckage of an alien ship that crashed on the first day."

Elena Kurogami appeared behind them, a white lab coat worn over form-fitting tactical gear that accentuated her generous curves. Her dark brown eyes gleamed with that dangerous mix of intellect and ambition.

"I’ve analyzed the reports. What they call a 'System' is actually a second-rate alien artifact. Likely a Harvester prototype used for troop control. Inferior to your Nexus Administrator System in every respect. It offers unit buffs, automatic military ranks, and a rigid hierarchy... but it doesn't allow for the editing of the laws of reality. It doesn't allow for true dominion."

Xander remained silent for a few seconds, processing the information. His Omniscient Analysis had already confirmed much of what they were saying. He could sense, even from miles away, a presence opposed to his own—a network of artificial military authority, cold and mechanical.

"Ideology," he finally said, his voice deep and resonant. "They represent the old human order. Military hierarchy. Blind obedience to the State and the chain of command. I represent something new. An empire built on personal loyalty, absolute power, and individual ascension through the System. They will view us as heretics. We will view them as... obsolete."

Marcus tightened his grip on his sword hilt.

"Do you want me to ready a reconnaissance force, my lord?"

Xander shook his head.

"No. I will go myself. Lira, Elena, and you will accompany me. We’ll take twelve of our best soldiers." "I want to see this Iron Cross with my own eyes."

Elena smiled predatorily.

"Excellent. I’ll bring analysis equipment. If we can get samples of their artifact, I’ll be able to map out their weaknesses."

Lira shot a quick glance at Elena but said nothing. The silent rivalry between the two had grown over the past few days—both were vying for Xander’s attention and favor, even though they knew he wouldn't choose just one.

They set out at dawn the next day.

A party of sixteen left the territory in three armored vehicles reinforced by the System. Xander rode in the lead vehicle, sitting in the back seat like a king. Lira was to his left, Elena to his right. Marcus drove the escort vehicle ahead.

After two hours of cautious travel—avoiding large hordes and unstable portals—they spotted the Iron Cross base.

It was impressive.

What had once been a large joint Army and Air Force military base had been transformed into a fortress. Reinforced concrete walls clad in alien metal plating. Machine-gun turrets. A dimensional power generator providing a steady supply of electricity. Black flags bearing a stylized Iron Cross fluttered in the wind.

Above the main gate hovered a red hologram:

[Iron Cross – 4th Human Military Division]

“Order. Discipline. Survival.”

Xander narrowed his eyes. Pushing his Omniscient Analysis to the limit, he managed to spot the artifact at the center of the base—an irregular black obelisk pulsing with faint red energy. It was clearly inferior to his Nexus. It was mass-control technology, not sovereignty-granting tech.

“They call that the Legion Relic,” Elena said, glancing at the data on her modified tablet. “It grants a ‘Military System’ to anyone wearing a synchronization bracelet. Ranks are assigned automatically: Private, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and Colonel. The higher the rank, the greater the collective buffs. But the cost is steep: a loss of individual autonomy. The higher the rank, the more a person becomes part of the ‘Legion’.”

A bitter taste rose in Xander’s mouth.

“A human hive mind. Exactly what the Harvesters want. Turning humanity into organized cattle.”

They were detected while still 400 meters from the base.
