"I survived four hours alone against those things. I killed my own neighbor after he turned into one of those drones. I've changed, Xander. And if following you makes me stronger… then I accept the price."
He nodded, satisfied.
They continued cleaning.
Floors 9 through 7 were relatively easier. Only isolated monsters or small groups. Xander reached level 12. Lira reached level 8. They collected dozens of Inferior Blood Crystals, some Leech Tendons, and even a rare item: a[Enhanced Hunting Bow (Uncommon Rank)]which Xander immediately handed over to Lira.
"Better than your makeshift bow," he said.
Lira tested the weapon. The bow was perfect for her. When she fired a test arrow at the end of the corridor, its power and accuracy made her eyes gleam.

The formal treatment awakened something in Xander. He liked it.
On the 6th floor they found survivors.
Three people—a middle-aged couple and a young man of about 19—were barricaded inside an apartment. When Xander broke down the door (now with enough force to do so), they nearly had a heart attack upon seeing the two covered in blood.
"You... you are human!" exclaimed the woman, crying.
Xander quickly analyzed them with his skill.
System compatibility: 12%, 8%, and 31%. Pathetic. None of them were worth a future "Grant System." Still, he decided to use them as labor.

The cold, commanding tone left no room for discussion. The three nodded quickly, grabbing knives and pieces of wood as weapons.
With makeshift reinforcements, clearing floors 5 through 3 was faster, though more chaotic. The monsters were more numerous. Xander lost one of the civilians—the young man was caught by a tentacle and sucked down until he became a dry husk. Lira killed the monster responsible with a rage-fueled Mana Arrow.
Xander showed no emotion. He just carried on.
When they reached the ground floor, the sun was already setting. The building's lobby was a battlefield. Sixteen monsters, ranging from levels 4 to 9, had gathered there, drawn by the noise and the smell of blood.
The final battle of the day was epic.
Xander led from the center. His sword was a silver blur. Lira fired from the top of the stairs, blue arrows cutting through the air. The two surviving civilians acted as bait and support, throwing furniture and bottles of alcohol that Lira set ablaze with flaming mana arrows (an ability she had unlocked on her own).

Lira didn't look away. A slight blush crept up her neck, contrasting with her red hair.
