Music pounded through the Grand City Hall in Beacon Hills, the arrangements of the hall flickering with wealth.

Grandma Rocks' Seventieth birthday party. The guest list read like a who's who of Beacon Hills' elite, designer gowns, tailored suits, and the kind of jewelry that could fund a small country's GDP.

Novan burst through the entrance, his work boots squeaking against polished marble. Sweat darkened his collar. His fingers still smelled like bleach from the toilets he'd been scrubbing two hours ago.

He scanned the crowd desperately, searching for the one face that held his sister's life in her wrinkled hands.

"Oh God, what is the goat doing here?"

"Did someone forget to lock the service entrance?"

The whispers started like wildfire.

A woman in a blood-red evening gown actually stepped backward, pressing a jeweled hand to her chest. "Is that the... the son-in-law?"

"The live-in one, yes." Her companion snickered, not even bothering to lower her voice. "Heard he scrubs their floors. Can you imagine?"

"I heard he washes their cars too. All of them."

"And he *still* can't afford decent clothes."

Novan's jaw clenched. He'd heard worse. Done worse. He pushed through the crowd, leaving a wake of disgusted faces and hastily covered noses.

"Someone's tracking dirt.” Another added with disdain.

"Is that sweat? At Grandma Rocks' party?"

"He reeks like a sewer."

Each word was a needle. Each laugh a blade. But Olivia's pale face flashed behind his eyes, her skeletal frame on that hospital bench, shivering in the cold night air because Grandma Rocks had made one phone call.

He found her holding court near the champagne fountain, surrounded by her admirers like a queen bee.

"Mom." His voice cut through her laughter.

The circle around Grandma Rocks froze. Champagne glasses paused mid-sip.

She turned slowly, her smile curdling into disgust. "Excuse me, gentlemen."

"What did Olivia do wrong?" Novan's voice shook, not with fear but with barely restrained rage. "Why did you stop her treatment?"

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

"Oh my God, is he confronting her?"

"At her own birthday party?"

"The audacity. “

Grandma Rocks' face remained perfectly composed, but her eyes flashed with something cruel. She raised a handkerchief to her nose, as if his very presence contaminated the air.

"Novan, darling." Her voice dripped with venom disguised as honey. "You're making a scene. Don't embarrass me in front of my wonderful guests."

"My sister is dying!" The words exploded from him. "She has stage three cancer and you pulled her from treatment like she's… like she's nothing!”

"She is nothing." Grandma Rocks took a delicate sip of champagne. "Just like you."

The crowd leaned in. This was better than any entertainment they'd paid for.

"My money," Novan's voice cracked. "All my savings, everything I deposited with the family account. You said you'd invest it, you promised it would cover her treatment…”

"Money?" Grandma Rocks' laugh was sharp enough to draw blood. "You mean the pathetic pennies you've scraped together from unclogging toilets and mopping floors?"

Someone in the crowd laughed, then another joined in. Then the whole hall erupted.

Novan's hands trembled. Every dollar had been earned on his knees. Every cent soaked with his sweat and humiliation. Three years of double shifts. Three years of being called "the help" in his own wife's house. Three years of saving while wearing the same two pairs of pants.

"That money was compensation," Grandma Rocks continued, her voice rising. "For having to endure you in this family. For the embarrassment of having my granddaughter married to a leech.”

"Since Grandpa dragged you into this family like a stray dog, you've done nothing but drain us dry. So consider that money—" She waved her hand dismissively, "payment for the shame you've cost us. It doesn't even cover a fraction of what you owe."

It wasn't true, they had accepted him when he got married to Alexi, when Grandpa introduced them together because then, he had money.

Until the industrial revolution that took place two years ago, bringing them his empire he had built in a blink and reducing him to nothing.

Then their true colours and hatred for him surfaced.

Novan felt something break inside him. "She's twenty-two years old.”

"And the world already has enough trash." Grandma Rocks' smile was pure poison. "If your sister dies, that's one less burden on society. On us!!!”

The words hit him like a physical blow. His vision blurred. His sister, sweet Olivia, who used to braid flowers into crowns when they were kids, who smiled even when the chemo made her vomit blood, was reduced to trash because of his social status.

"Oh, he's going to cry," someone whispered gleefully.

"Look at his face!"

Novan's fists clenched so hard his nails drew blood from his palms.

"But I'm not heartless." Grandma Rocks examined her manicured nails. "I'll make you a deal. Divorce my daughter. Right now. Sign the papers, pack your rags, and disappear from our lives."

She leaned in close enough that he could smell her expensive perfume mixed with champagne. "Do that, and I'll call the hospital. Treatment begins immediately. Your sister lives."

The hall went silent. Even the music seemed to dim.

Novan's mind raced. Divorce Alexia. The girl he'd fallen for before his father's company collapsed, before the car accident that killed his parents, before his uncle stole everything and left him with nothing but debt and a dying sister.

The Rocks family had changed the moment they realized Novan's inheritance was smoke and mirrors. The engagement became a trap. They'd dangled Olivia's treatment like a carrot, making him sign that humiliating contract, live-in son-in-law, glorified servant, house pet.

And now they wanted him gone.

"What do you say, Novan?" Grandma Rocks savored every second of his agony. "The ball's in your court. Your pride... or your sister's life?"

"Accept it, you fool!" Charlie Rocks, Grandma's golden-boy grandson, called from the crowd. His teeth were too white, his sneer too practiced. "Free my cousin Alexia from this embarrassment already!"

"Wait, so it's TRUE?" A woman's scandalized voice rang out. "The Rocks' granddaughter is actually married to *him*?"

"I thought it was a joke.”

"Look at him! He probably can't even afford a divorce lawyer!"

"Alexia could do so much better. Anyone would be an upgrade."

"Hell, a homeless man would be an upgrade. At least he'd have *dignity*."

The laughter was a tsunami. Novan felt himself drowning in it.

Then he saw her.

Alexia stood frozen at the ballroom entrance, still wearing her catering supervisor's badge. She must have been in the kitchen checking on the food, his job, but he'd abandoned it when the hospital called about Olivia.

Her face went white. Then red. Then she buried her face in her hands.

Something twisted in Novan's chest. Shame? Anger? Love? He couldn't tell anymore.

"Grandma, please." Alexia's voice was barely audible. "Stop this."

"I'm helping you, darling." Grandma Rocks didn't even look at her. "You'll thank me later."

"Wait, wait, wait." Richard Wane stood up, his Rolex catching the light. He was one of Beacon Hills' real estate moguls, the kind of man who bought buildings like normal people bought coffee. "This is entertaining and all, but let's be practical."

The crowd perked up.

"Even if he *wants* to choose, the poor bastard still can't afford the treatment." Richard's smile was all teeth. "I heard it's a million dollars for the full course."

"A million?" Someone whistled. "He can't even afford a thirty-dollar meal!"

"So here's what I propose." Richard pulled out his checkbook with a flourish. "Let's sweeten the deal. Make it impossible to refuse. I'll start the bidding—one thousand dollars. Cold, hard cash. Right now."

Novan's stomach dropped.

"Oh, this is brilliant.!" A woman clapped her hands. "Two thousand! I'll add two thousand!"

"Four thousand!" Another voice.

"Ten thousand! Free Alexia from this nightmare!"

They were bidding. Bidding on his marriage like it was livestock at auction. Like he was something to be bought and discarded.

"Twenty thousand!"

"Thirty!"

The numbers climbed higher. Each one a fresh humiliation. Novan watched them, these people in their thousand-dollar outfits, throwing money around like confetti, gambling on his desperation.

Alexia's eyes met him across the crowd. He saw clouded emotions there. Shame.

"Fifty thousand!" Charlie Rocks shouted, clearly enjoying himself.

Grandma Rocks sipped her champagne, satisfaction radiating from every pore.

Then a voice cut through the chaos like a knife.

"Ten million dollars."

The hall went dead silent.

Novan's blood turned to ice. He knew that voice.

The crowd parted like the Red Sea. A man stepped forward—tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a suit that probably cost more than everything Novan owned. His face was familiar in the worst possible way.

"Festus?" Novan's voice came out strangled.

Festus smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "You heard me. Ten million dollars. Right now. Sign the papers, and the money's yours."

Novan's mind reeled. Festus, his old rival from the days when Novan actually had money, status, a future. Before everything collapsed.

The crowd erupted.

"Ten MILLION?"

"Who IS that guy?"

"He must really hate him.”

"No," Novan said. His voice was quiet, but something in it made people stop. "No amount of money will ever make me leave my wife. And my sister will survive. Like she always does."

He turned and ran, his boots pounding against marble, the crowd's shocked gasps chasing him like ghosts.

Behind him, Grandma Rocks' voice rang out, sharp with triumph: "Don't worry, darlings. He'll come crawling back on his knees, begging for that divorce."

She raised her glass in a toast. "And then we'll finally have a son-in-law befitting our status!"

The crowd cheered.

Novan burst through the doors, phone already pressed to his ear. His hands shook so badly he nearly dropped it.

Then the doctor's words hit him like a bullet:

“Mr. Novan, your sister's condition has deteriorated. If we don't operate within the next six hours..."

He didn't hear the rest. He was already running.

***

Novan skidded to a stop in front of the doctor, who stood with his arms crossed and an expression of cold professionalism.

"Where is she?" Novan gasped.

"She's inside. For now." The doctor's tone was ice. "But this is a hospital, Mr. Zikker, not a charity organization. You pay up right this instant, or you leave me no choice."

The unspoken threat hung in the air like a noose.

Novan's phone buzzed in his pocket. A text from an unknown number:

Clock's ticking. Ten million. Just sign…”

"This place is empty, Traveling Doctor Liu."Traveling Doctor Liu scanned his surrounding and nodded in satisfaction. He only wanted to talk about some things with the young girl, so this place would be good enough."Young Miss Hua, I'm sure that you know what I would like to ask. However, I'll still say it out loud. Are you the one who concoct that medicine?"Nan Hua was silent before nodding. "As you have guessed, Traveling Doctor Liu."This time, Traveling Doctor Liu's eyes shone with interest. That kind of poison definitely couldn't be made overnight. This made him curious just how did this young girl who was barely 10 years old and didn't have a place to create medicine could possibly make such poison."How interesting. Nan Hua, would you like to be my disciple?"Be his disciple?Nan Hua looked at Traveling Doctor Liu and felt a bit apprehensive. Traveling Doctor Liu was the best doctor in this era with no one could come close. If he dared to claim to be second, no one would dare

The door opened after quite some time."General Nan had fallen asleep." Traveling Doctor Liu looked at the four youngsters in front of him. "You may come in to have a talk with Old Madam Long.""What Old Madam Long? You're not fit to call me old, Old Liu.""Isn't that just an address, Old Madam Long?" Traveling Doctor Liu clearly looked like he enjoyed making Old Madam Long annoyed. At this point, Old Madam Long pulled a long face when she looked at Traveling Doctor Liu. If her first regret was meeting Old Master Nan because of her husband, her second regret was meeting this traveling doctor because of her master. He was equally annoying, very similar to Old Master Nan."Grandmother, it's already late. Concubine mothers will be worried if they can't find you." Long Qian Xing cupped his fist.Old Madam Long snorted. She hated those concubines of her son who looked like they were simply taking place in her house. If not because her son was not here, she would have long wished to kick th

Nan Hua looked at Traveling Doctor Liu for a moment before standing up and stood beside him. She stretched her hand, allowing him to check her pulse.Traveling Doctor Liu looked at the young girl in front of him. After a while, he retracted his hand and sighed."Your body is healthier than most children your age. Did you learn martial arts, Young Miss?"Nan Hua looked at the doctor in front of her. She knew that it would be impossible to hide it from him, but knowing his identity, she didn't have any qualms of letting him know. Traveling Doctor Liu was just like his name, he always travels from one place to another. As a doctor, he also upheld the principle of never disclosing his patient's real result. Even if someone tried to pay him a lot of money… he would end up giving fake information instead of the real one. Thus, no one tried to bribe him anymore."Yes.""While it's good to train your body, the poison training left some residue in your body. If not treated in time, it might af

"My Master would like to talk a bit with you before following you to meet your grandfather. Lin Yuan was speechless. He was the one who wanted to introduce the traveling doctor, right? Why did this annoying man had to take the credit for himself?"Would you like to go by carriage, Young Miss?" Merchant Lin resisted the urge to lash out at Long Qian Xing. He knew that he would only end up in the worse end of the stick if he tried to do anything funny.Nan Hua squinted her eyes. "We'll walk.""I understand, Young Miss."Taking a carriage would make it easy for others to recognize that she was going out of Nan Family. As the young miss of Nan Family, it was not easy for her to go out unnoticed, so walking around would be better.Feng Ao Kuai looked at Long Qian Xing fiercely. "Please take care of my sister.""Please be assured that I'll not harm her, Second Young Master Feng." He heard that her health was not good, so he was a bit worried whether she could come over or not.Long Qian Xing smiled. "It's nothing much, First Young Master Nan. I'm glad that grandmother can be of help."When he heard that Old Master Nan required his grandmother's help again, he simply barged into her room.
