“You think I won't?”
Years of humiliation rose in Ethan's throat until he could barely breathe around them.
“If you lay a hand on me, my dad will make you sorry.”
Brooke wasn't afraid. Not yet.
“You don't get to keep doing this!”
He grabbed her shoulders and shook her.
“Have you lost your mind? Let go!”
Her voice climbed into a scream.
For an instant, Ethan thought of the creature in the trees. They still didn't know what it was, or how far away it might be. Screaming could bring it back.
But his anger was louder than the thought.
Brooke's face flushed. Then she caught the look in his eyes, and some of her certainty faltered.
“Yes,” he said. “Maybe I have. Maybe you finally pushed me too far.”
Seeing fear on her face gave him a brief, bitter satisfaction.
Ever since he had entered the Mercer house, she had made sure he had no dignity left.
He remembered an afternoon not long after David took him in. Brooke had forgotten a towel and ordered him to bring one to the bathroom. He had opened the door at the wrong moment, and she had accused him of spying on her.
She had hit him, called him names, and made him kneel to apologize. Otherwise, she said, she would tell her father what kind of boy he really was.
He had been terrified of causing trouble in the only home he had left.
So he had done what she wanted.
And Brooke had learned that she could get away with it.
Eventually, home hadn't been enough. She humiliated him at school too. If he spoke to another girl, Brooke would appear and tear into him in front of everyone.
After a while, people treated him as if he belonged to her, as if getting close to him wasn't worth the trouble.
All those years were breaking loose now.
Brooke's hand closed around the branch he had left beside the rocks. She swung it at him.
Ethan caught it, tore it out of her grip, and flung it aside.
“Leech, right? That's all I am to you?”
“Let me go!”
“You accuse me of things I haven't done. You treat me like I'm not even human. You held my head in a toilet until I couldn't breathe!”
He shoved her backward. She landed hard on the sand.
“You nearly killed me, Brooke.”
She stared up at him, disheveled and frightened, and the sight twisted something inside him.
Why couldn't she have treated him differently? Why had every day in that house had to be a fight he wasn't allowed to fight back?
He had stayed silent because he owed David so much. Somewhere along the way, that silence had become a habit he didn't know how to break.
Brooke began to cry.
“When we get home, I'm telling my dad everything. I'll make sure everybody knows what you are.”
“I don't care.”
“He'll—”
“We don't even know if we're getting home!”
His shout echoed off the rocks.
Her father's anger. Other people's opinions. What did any of it matter if they starved here?
“Even now, you're threatening me.” He crouched and gripped her shoulders again. “You want me to wash your clothes? Your socks? Clean up every mess you leave? I'm not doing it anymore.”
Brooke gave a shaky, contemptuous snort.
“You never minded before. I'm your sister. You're supposed to help.”
“My sister?”
The words almost made him laugh.
“I tried to treat you like family. Have you ever treated me like your brother? You held me under water and didn't care if I came back up. I just stood between you and something that could have torn me apart. Did you care whether I survived?”
His eyes burned.
He remembered how she had looked when she spotted Logan: delighted, relieved.
He knew what that relief meant. Someone else had arrived. Someone she considered worth being around.
If Logan had been alive, Ethan had no doubt that she would have run straight to him. Then the two of them would have expected Ethan to keep fetching and carrying, as if nothing had changed.
“Fine,” Brooke said. “You've made your point. Stop yelling. You're scaring me.”
She had always thought of him as an intruder, the unwanted boy stealing her father's attention. She had never seriously considered what years of treating him that way might do to him.
Now the hatred in his face unsettled her.
But even then, she couldn't bring herself to back down.
“You're going to pay for what you've done to me,” Ethan said.
The words kept turning in his head. She had to understand. She had to feel something of what he had felt.
Brooke lifted her chin again.
“Then do it. Stop talking about it.”
His expression frightened her, but she met it with a reckless, shaking defiance. The argument darkened into the threat of something neither of them could take back.
She struck him across the face.
“There,” she said through her tears. “You hate me so much? Go ahead. Show me.”

Chapter 011
Ethan stared at her.She couldn't stand the idea of him being with Hannah, so now she was insisting he stay beside her all night. He was sick of being ordered around. And after everything that had happened, all he wanted was a little time with the one person who actually wanted him there.“Then all three of us can squeeze in,” he said.Brooke blinked.“All three?”“That's the only option. Otherwise, Hannah and I will find somewhere else.”She hesitated.“Fine. But don't crowd me.”The hollow had been worn smooth by years of seawater. Higher rocks rose around its edges, enclosing a space roughly five feet wide and a little over six feet long.Ethan settled down beside Hannah. They seemed to be above the waterline for the night, but the stone beneath them was cold.“Move.”Brooke wedged herself between them.Ethan sat up again.“Seriously?”“It's freezing. You two were going to huddle together and leave me out here?”He closed his eyes for a moment.Even going to sleep had to become an

“Ethan, please. Don't start another fight.”Hannah held his hand as he walked.“You might be able to ignore it. I can't.”He had told Brooke to stop only yesterday. Apparently, she had already forgotten.“You live with her family. Her dad has done a lot for you. If she wants to say something nasty, let her. I'm okay.”Despite her words, Hannah looked quietly happy that he was defending her.“Take a breath,” she added. “You don't have to fight everyone for me.”“If she had half your understanding...” Ethan muttered.Years of mockery had taught Hannah to endure things nobody should have had to endure. Losing weight hadn't erased that habit. Other people's opinions still stung, but Ethan's was the one she cared about most.“Why does what she thinks still matter so much to you?” she asked suddenly.“It doesn't.”The answer came too quickly.Hannah glanced toward Brooke, walking ahead of them in the moonlight.“Everyone's always treated her like she's special. I guess that gets into your h
Chapter 009
Brooke watched them walk away hand in hand, furious.Beneath the anger was something she couldn't quite name: a sharp sense of being left behind, as if someone had taken something she had always assumed was hers.Ethan scraped a shallow pit in the sand and arranged the firewood, leaving gaps for air. Then he set to work with his improvised fire drill. It took more than ten minutes to produce an ember. He sheltered it carefully and blew until the tinder caught.“Wow,” Hannah whispered. She had never seen someone make a fire that way. She watched the first flames rise, then looked at him with such open admiration that he couldn't help smiling.Brooke saw the smile.“Doesn't take much to impress her,” she muttered.Once the fire was established, Ethan went to the rocks to gather food. He pried loose oysters and even collected barnacles. There might be crabs, shrimp, or small fish hiding in the pools too, though they would be hard to spot in the dark. The flashlight changed that.He swept

“Ethan?”She sounded as if she didn't quite trust her own eyes. She took a few more steps, then stopped beneath the moonlight.“It is you.”“Hannah?”Before he could say anything else, Hannah Bennett threw her arms around him.He stood motionless for a second, then hugged her back, awkwardly but tightly.Of all the people he might have found here, she was the one he most wanted to see.At college, they had recognized something in each other. Brooke's public attacks had made Ethan an easy target. People laughed along, and after a while he had learned to expect it.Hannah knew what that felt like. She was about five foot seven and had once weighed more than 175 pounds. Other students had turned her weight into a running joke, calling her a pig and finding new ways to make her feel unwelcome.Ethan hadn't joined in.When she decided she wanted to lose weight, he encouraged her. It took nearly a year of steady effort, but she followed through. She wasn't one of the campus celebrities. She
Chapter 007
Brooke stayed tucked against Ethan in the hollow, as if the narrow space beside him were the only safe place left in the world. He barely moved. His arm was going numb, but shifting would only frighten her again. For once, she understood that he was all she had.The howling continued for hours, then finally faded. Neither of them slept well, but the creatures never came onto the beach. At dawn, a gull pecked Ethan awake.“Get lost!”He flapped a hand at it. Brooke stirred beside him.“I'm starving.” She pressed a hand to her stomach. “And so thirsty. I could drink a gallon of water.”She stared at the ocean and swallowed.“Not that water,” Ethan said. “Unless you want to make things worse.”But the sight of the sea reminded him of something. The animals in the forest had to get water somewhere. There must be a freshwater source on the island.Finding it mattered more than finding another meal.He collected a few oysters and other shellfish from around the rocks. After they had eaten e

Ethan stood over Brooke, trembling. His anger had carried him this far. Now, staring at the fear she was trying to hide, he could see the edge of what he was about to become.“My dad treated you like his own son,” she said. “From the moment you moved in.”Tears slipped down her face.“And I had to share him with you. You took him from me. Now you want to hurt me? After everything he did for you?”The mention of David hit Ethan harder than her slap.He stopped. He remembered his father's death. David taking him home. All the years the man had worked to make sure Ethan had somewhere to belong. Then he remembered his own father's words: Be someone people can depend on. Stand up for yourself, but don't lose sight of who you are.Ethan released her and stepped back. His father hadn't raised him to answer cruelty with a different kind of cruelty. That didn't make the anger disappear. It left him with nowhere to put it.“I've put up with you for years,” he said. “Why couldn't you let me have
