Behind Leo, Maya screamed and fell to her knees, covering her ears. The magic was leaking toward her, filling her mind with pure terror.
But Leo? Leo just stood there.
He did not scream. He did not run. He did not even blink.
Inside his mind, the Supreme Archon watched the dancing shadows with deep disappointment. “This is what passes for magic in this world?” Zayin thought. “It is clumsy. It is messy. The mana flow is completely unstable. It is like watching a dog try to play a piano.”
The shadowy monsters leaped from the walls, diving straight into Leo's eyes, trying to rip his mind apart.
But Leo's soul was the soul of the Supreme Archon. It was a soul that had burned like a star, a soul that had ruled over realms of gods and demons. A petty Fear Hex trying to break his mind was like a single drop of rain trying to destroy an ocean.
The shadows hit Leo and instantly shattered into harmless gray smoke.
The whispers stopped. The terrible faces on the walls vanished. The room was just a dark, messy apartment again.
The Collector in the sunglasses froze. His mouth dropped open. He looked at his hands, then looked at the skinny teenager.
"What... what did you do?" the man gasped, taking a step back. "The hex... it just disappeared!"
Leo tilted his head slightly. "You call that magic?" he asked, his voice echoing with a strange, double-layered coldness. "You leave too many gaps in your mana threads. You use raw emotion instead of control. It is insulting."
Before the men could react, Leo stepped toward the coffee table. He reached out his hand, moving his fingers toward the glowing red Blood Contract.
"Don't touch that!" the bearded Collector yelled, finally standing up. "It will burn the flesh off your bones!"
Leo ignored him. He placed his index finger directly onto the glowing red parchment.
He did not burn. Instead, he closed his eyes and felt the flow of the spell. To the Supreme Archon, magic was like a beautiful piece of fabric. He could see every thread, every knot, and every mistake.
The contract was designed to pull a soul out of a body and trap it in the paper. It was a one-way street.
“Reverse it,” Leo commanded his mind.
Using his supreme understanding of 'spell-wefting', Leo pushed a tiny bit of his own powerful soul energy into the paper. He grabbed the invisible threads of the spell and twisted them backward.
Suddenly, the dark red glow of the contract stopped.
For a split second, the room was completely pitch black.
Then, the contract erupted.
It did not burn with normal orange fire. It exploded into blinding, brilliant violet flames. The fire shot upward, but it did not burn the wooden table or the air. It was a magical fire, hungry for mana.
The violet flames leaped off the table like a striking snake. They flew straight at the bearded Collector, wrapping around his right arm.
"ARGH!" the bearded man screamed.
It was a scream of pure, absolute agony. The violet fire was freezing cold, not hot. It was burning away his magical energy, eating directly into his nerves. The man dropped to the floor, thrashing and rolling around. He slapped at his arm, trying to put the fire out, but his hands passed right through the magical flames.
"Help me! God, help me, it's eating me!" he shrieked, tears pouring down his face.
The man in the sunglasses panicked. He backed away, his face pale with horror. He had never seen magic like this in his entire life. He looked at the teenager standing calmly in the center of the room, surrounded by the violent purple light.
Leo’s eyes glowed with that terrifying violet fire once again. He stepped over the screaming man on the floor. He leaned in close to the terrified man in the sunglasses.
The temperature in the room dropped again, but this time, it was not from a spell. It was the sheer, crushing pressure of a king looking at a peasant.
"Take your garbage and leave my home," Leo whispered. His voice was quiet, but it hit the man's ears like thunder. "And tell your master... he is the one in debt to me now."
The man in sunglasses didn't hesitate. He grabbed his screaming partner by the collar of his expensive suit. Dragging the bearded man across the floor, he pulled him out the front door and ran down the dark hallway, their frantic footsteps echoing loudly until they were gone.
Silence returned to the tiny apartment.
The violet fire on the table slowly faded away, leaving the terrible Blood Contract turned to harmless gray ash.
Behind Leo, Maya slowly pushed herself up from the floor. She was trembling from head to toe. She looked at the ash on the table, and then she looked at her little brother’s back.
"Leo...?" she whispered, her voice full of confusion and fear. "How did you... what was that?"
Leo turned around to face her. He wanted to smile. He wanted to comfort her and tell her that everything was going to be okay, that the Archon would protect her.
But as he opened his mouth to speak, a terrible tearing sensation ripped through his chest.
His vision spun wildly. The use of his soul's pressure, combined with reversing the complex magic of the contract, had pushed his broken mortal body past its absolute breaking point.
Leo doubled over, falling hard to his knees.
"Leo!" Maya screamed, rushing forward and catching him before his face hit the floor.
Leo coughed violently. A thick puddle of dark, pitch-black blood spilled from his lips onto the cheap linoleum floor. The raw magic he had just channeled was poisoning his fragile mortal organs. His heart was stuttering, beating entirely out of rhythm.
“I am out of time,” Zayin realized as the darkness crept into the edges of his vision. “If I do not find a way to refine this weak vessel by morning, this second life will end just as quickly as it began.”
His eyes rolled back, and he collapsed completely into his sister's panicked arms.

"Your aim is terrible," Leo said calmly, closing the distance between them. He stood right in front of her, towering over her slightly. Elara was too stunned to raise her guns again. She just looked up into his dark, endlessly deep eyes. "And your magic is even worse," Leo continued, his voice dropping to a cold whisper. He reached out and gently tapped the barrel of her silver revolver. "You think you are using ice magic, Elara. But you are not."Elara finally found her voice. "What are you talking about? My family has used the Frost Arts for centuries! We are the masters of ice!""You are fools," Leo corrected her softly. "True ice magic is drawn from the moisture in the air. But you? You are drawing the cold from inside your own body. You are not casting magic; you are bleeding out a curse."Elara took a step back, her face turning pale. "That's a lie.""Is it?" Leo asked, raising an eyebrow. He looked closely at her face. "Tell me, do you have trouble sleeping at night because y

The invisible shockwave of raw magic faded away, leaving the city quiet once more. Leo stood on the dark sidewalk of the Under-Market, looking down at his empty hand. The glowing Aether Core was completely gone. It had dissolved into pure energy, rushing into his newly refined bones and filling his body with immense power. For the first time since he had awakened in this fragile mortal body, Zayin felt a tiny bit of his true strength return. “Good,” he thought, a cold smile forming on his lips. “This will be enough to shield me from their bullets tonight.” Leo shoved his hands into his pockets and began to walk. He did not want to cast any spells in the middle of the street where mundane humans could see him. He needed a quiet place to test his new magical reserves. He walked for twenty minutes until he found a small, abandoned park near the edge of the industrial district. The swings were rusted, and the grass was overgrown with thick weeds. The single streetlight near the entra

"Ah, you have a good eye, boy," the man lied smoothly, trying to sound important. "This is the 'Blade of Shadows.' It is a genuine 15th-century dark magic artifact, found in a tomb in Europe. The runes on the blade will allow you to cut through solid steel. Because I like your face, I will give you a special discount. One hundred thousand dollars. Cash only."Leo stared at the dagger, and then he looked at the shopkeeper. Slowly, Leo let out a short, cold laugh. "One hundred thousand?" Leo scoffed. His voice was filled with deep insult. "You are not just a thief; you are a terrible liar."The shopkeeper’s greedy smile vanished. His face turned red with anger. "Listen here, you little punk—""The blade is not obsidian," Leo interrupted, his voice cutting through the air like a whip. "It is cheap painted glass. And the 'ancient' runes on the side? They are drawn completely wrong. The third symbol is supposed to mean 'Strength,' but whoever painted it missed a line. As it is drawn righ
Chapter 7
The silence in the hallway was so absolute that a dropping pin would have sounded like a gunshot. Dozens of elite students stood frozen like statues. They stared down at the concrete landing where Trent, the untouchable king of Oakbridge Academy, lay sobbing. He clutched his unnaturally bent leg, crying loudly like a frightened child. Without breaking his stride, Leo Vance simply stepped right over Trent’s crying body. He did not look down. He did not smile. He didn't even turn his head. He continued walking down the bright, polished hallway, heading toward his first class, looking as calm as if he were taking a quiet morning stroll through a park. From the dark corner near the tall lockers, a pair of sharp eyes watched him leave. It was a girl. She leaned against the cold metal lockers, entirely hidden in the shadows. Her hair was a striking, unnatural pale silver that caught the light, and her eyes were a piercing ice blue. This was Elara Frost. Most students thought Elara was

"It was a trick of the light," Leo lied calmly. "The Cartel thugs were just trying to scare us. They didn't really hurt me.""But they wanted my soul! They had magic!" Maya panicked, grabbing her hair. "I handled it," Leo said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "You do not need to worry about the Obsidian Cartel anymore."Maya looked at him like he was crazy. "Leo, they are murderers! They won't just stop! Listen to me," she grabbed his shoulders, her eyes wide with desperation. "You need to go to school. Oakbridge Academy has security guards. The Cartel won't attack you in broad daylight around all those rich kids. Just go to school, keep your head down, and stay hidden. I will go talk to my boss at the diner. Maybe he can give me a loan. I will figure out the money."Leo looked at his sister. He saw the deep, genuine love in her tired eyes. He knew the Cartel was not finished. He knew he had to destroy them completely. But right now, Maya needed to feel like she was in contro
Chapter 5
"Leo! No, no, stay with me!" Maya screamed. She dropped to her knees on the cheap linoleum floor. Her little brother’s head rested in her lap. His skin was as cold as ice, and thick, black blood spilled from his lips. Maya panicked. She reached into her pocket with trembling hands and pulled out her cracked cell phone. Her fingers quickly dialed 9-1-1. "I'm getting an ambulance," she cried, tears streaming down her face. "Just hold on, Leo! They will fix you!"Before she could press the call button, a pale, bloody hand reached up and grabbed her wrist. Maya gasped. She looked down. Leo’s eyes were half-open. The strange violet fire in them was gone, replaced by deep exhaustion. But his grip on her wrist was surprisingly strong. "No... hospitals," Leo whispered. His voice was hoarse and weak. "They cannot... fix this. No doctors.""But you're dying!" Maya sobbed. "You are coughing up black blood!""Toxins," Leo managed to say. "Just... give me a moment."Inside the boy's mind, th
