CHAPTER 55: Ash and Wind
"Team Alpha, we're in," Gabriel whispered. "Moving below deck."The interior of the yacht was luxurious, all polished wood and expensive fixtures. Gabriel descended the stairs, following the sound of voices. Three men in the main cabin, drinking and playing cards. They looked up as he entered, reaching for weapons.Gabriel was faster. Fire erupted from his hands, not to kill but to disarm and disorient. The men screamed, dropping their guns and falling back. He was on them in seconds, knocking them unconscious with quick efficiency."Clear," He said. "Xavier, where are the victims?""Cargo hold. Lower level, aft section. I'm reading... Jesus, Gabriel, there's at least twenty heat signatures down there."Gabriel found the hatch, a heavy steel door with multiple locks. Rage bubbled up in his chest. They had locked human beings in a cargo hold like cargo. This was despicable."I want to burn this entire boat," The Phoenix said quietly. "I want to burn it until nothing remains.""I know
CHAPTER 54: Still Waters
The Marina District sparkled under the moonlight, all glass towers and gleaming yachts. Gabriel stood on the rooftop of a warehouse across the harbor, watching the luxury boats bob gently in their slips. His father had built this place twenty years ago, pouring millions into revitalizing Chicago's waterfront. He created jobs, brought life back to a forgotten corner of the city and Ian Siegel had turned it into a human trafficking hub."Three boats," Xavier said, looking through binoculars. "The Meridian, the Azure Dream, and the Silver Swan. FBI confirms all three arrived from international waters in the past week. Manifests say they're carrying art and furniture. Reality is considerably darker."Gabriel's jaw clenched. The Phoenix burned hot in his chest, furious in a way he had rarely felt from it. Even the ancient entity was disgusted."How many?" Gabriel asked quietly."We don't know exact numbers," Agent Sarah Matthews said. She was FBI, mid-thirties, with sharp eyes and a no
CHAPTER 53: Something to Lose
"I'm listening." Gabriel answered."Two more families want to make deals with you. They reached out to me yesterday, asking if I could set up meetings. They want out from under Wyatt before the whole thing collapses on their heads."Gabriel's pulse quickened. If more families turned, that was a tipping point."Why the sudden change of heart?" Ariel asked."Because they're not stupid," Priest replied. "They can see which way the wind's blowing. Wyatt's getting desperate, making mistakes. The Harrington fire, for instance, was supposed to be a clean operation. Take you down quietly, make it look like an accident. Instead, it's all over the news, making Wyatt look sloppy. They don't want to be associated with that kind of heat.""Desperation makes people dangerous," Alfred observed quietly."Exactly," Priest agreed. "Which brings me to the really important part. Siegel's planning something big. I don't have all the details yet, but it involves multiple artifacts and a direct strike at y
CHAPTER 52: Ashes to Ashes
Gabriel stared at the television screen, watching his life implode in high definition."—devastating fire at the historic Harrington Estate has left authorities searching for answers," The news anchor said, her expression grave. "Sources close to the investigation say that Gabriel Martinez is wanted for questioning. Martinez, who has been linked to several recent incidents of vigilante violence, was reportedly seen fleeing the scene."The screen cut to footage of the mansion burning, flames shooting fifty feet into the air, then a photo of Gabriel."Martinez has been connected to attacks on several prominent business establishments, including the recent assault on businessman Ian Siegel's charity gala. Police Commissioner Hayes stated this morning that Martinez should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.""Armed and extremely dangerous," Gabriel repeated bitterly. "That's rich."Ariel paced behind the couch, her phone pressed to her ear. "Yes, I understand that, but if you w
CHAPTER 51: Ashes
The safe door swung open.Inside were three items, each radiating that horrible electricity that made Gabriel's nerves sing. A jade bracelet covered in Chinese characters. A silver dagger with a bone handle, and a small leather-bound book that looked ancient enough to crumble at a touch.Gabriel didn't take any of them. Instead, he pulled out his phone and photographed everything, including the documentation Siegel had kept about their abilities."This is insane," Gabriel breathed, reading one of the notes. "The bracelet grants persuasion powers. The dagger can cut through anything. The book..." He leaned closer. "The book contains rituals for transferring artifact powers from one person to another.""Wait, so he could take your Phoenix Heart?""He could try. Says here the transfer usually kills both participants. Very comforting.""Got the files," Xavier announced. "Financial records going back years, correspondence with every corrupt official in the state, and, oh, this is good,
CHAPTER 50: Evidence
Three hours later, Gabriel crouched in the shadows of the east garden, watching the last of the catering vans pull away. The gala had ended an hour ago, but Siegel's security teams were still doing their final sweeps. Through the windows, he could see guards checking rooms, their flashlight beams cutting through the darkness."Everyone's in position?" Gabriel murmured into his comm."The north entrance is clear," Xavier replied. "Security patrol just passed. You've got a four-minute window before the next rotation.""I'm at the service entrance," Ariel said. "Two guards posted, but they're distracted. One's on his phone, the other's smoking."Gabriel closed his eyes, letting the Phoenix extend his senses. Heat signatures bloomed in his mind's eye, red and orange shapes moving through the mansion. Twelve guards were still inside, concentrated on the first floor and main entrances. The second floor west wing, where Siegel's office waited, showed only two signatures. Manageable."Alrig
