Chapter six
Meanwhile, in a luxurious reservation inside Lycon Hotel, Charlotte, who had just spoken with Lucas, was seated on the sofa as she hung up the phone. Her smile was as radiant as ever as she had just confirmed that he was on his way. Unable to wait any longer, she turned to the side where her friend, Casey Morgan, was seated. She was a gorgeous lady with perfect curves and blond hair. As Charlotte leaned over, she spoke happily. “Guess what? Lucas is on his way. He is a very hardworking man, even in his studies. Both of you will be a perfect match. Just wait, he is on his way. You will like him.” Casey pulled her earpiece out and looked at her. Her expression remained unreadable before she crossed her legs. “Okay.” Both Charlotte and Casey had known each other for a long time and it prompted them to go to college together, but even as they weren’t studying the same course, their friendship had never gone apart. Today being Charlotte's birthday, she hadn’t only invited Casey but also Lucas’s Roommates to attend her birthday party. It was like having a dorm mixer party. Furthermore, Charlotte had found out recently that Casey had been single throughout her high school years and even now that she was in college. To change that, she had been looking for a boyfriend, and that was when Lucas came into the picture. After all he had been single too and since he was a very good friend of Charlotte, she knew more about him and what’s more, she felt he was the suited person for her best friend, Casey. Just then, Charlotte walked over to the table, took a cup of pineapple juice, and brought it over for Casey. “Take this. You’ll like it.” She smiled as she handed it over. Crack! However, abruptly, the door was pushed open surprising everyone, and they twirled their heads in the direction expecting to see it was Lucas but who they saw was different. It was James Patel. The punk who had humiliated Lucas. To her surprise, this morning, she learned that he had toyed with Lucas. This made her swell in anger, and she barged into his dorm to give him a thorough warning. Now that he was here, she looked at him in disgust, as she felt he was here to make trouble. “What do you want?” She turned towards him and sneered. He had to be so thick-skinned to think of showing his face so shamelessly in a place where he wasn't needed. “Come on, Charlotte, are you still angry? I was only joking around with Lucas. I never thought he was going to deliver it.” James said faking to be innocent when it was obvious that he wasn’t. Hearing this, Charlotte hissed. She looked over and saw he came with his Roommate too, and each of them brought gifts. On the contrary, Charlotte's parents were also rich. Though she had tried to help Lucas countless times before, he had been unwilling to accept her help. James had known her for long too, so he didn’t dare to look down or mess with her as he knew what he would be getting right after. However, while this was going on, Casey had already taken off her earpiece. An expression emerged on her face as she stood up and walked up to Charlotte. “Charlotte, the Lucas you mentioned earlier, is it same Lucas you want to introduce me to? Is this the extent to which you have downgraded me to or what?” Casey's brows knitted together as she spoke. As soon as James heard this, his eyes flashed with excitement. He had longed to be in a relationship with Casey here as she was the school belle in every department. That was precisely why he came to Charlotte's birthday and brought some fancy gifts not only to present to Charlotte but to impress Casey and make her see how capable of a man he was. But what did he just hear? Charlotte wanted to hook her up with Lucas? That loser who could never hold a torch to him? Never. “Ooh, Miss Casey, you mean Lucas? I know him. He is very poor and filthy. Yesterday…” James paused and began to chuckle so hard, piquing her curiosity. As he recounted the incident yesterday on how he sent Lucas to deliver a pack of condoms to Alexander so he could hear his way with his ex, he just couldn’t contain the feeling. He laughed until there were tears in his eyes. But then he summarized everything in a few sentences. “You, watch your mouth!” Charlotte clenched her fist, feeling like skinning him alive. Casey and her friends immediately frowned. They couldn’t believe there could be such a poor person and what’s more, the story was humiliating. Lucas' roommates became pale as the never expected such incident to be leaked here. indeed James was worthless, and nothing good could ever come out of that mouth of his. “Okay, let’s forget about that trash bag.” James suddenly said with a smile before pulling his gift out. “Come, Charlotte, I bought you a gift.” However, before she could reply, a light knock came on the door. Knock! Knock! Looking toward it, the door creaked open and Lucas walked in with a pink bag. “Lucas, you came?” Charlotte rushed towards him, smiling. Lucas smiled and couldn’t help but look around. There were a lot of people whom he didn’t expect. Amidst this, he took notice of James, who was now scorning him. Lucas ignored him and tried his best to feel relaxed. In the past, he would have felt inferior in the presence of such rich folks, but now, after what happened today, after finding out that his friends were rich, how could he? The feeling had blown up in the smoke already. “He is Lucas?” Casey lifted her eyes' eyebrow to stare at him. Though she wanted a boyfriend, it wasn’t that necessary if his parents were very wealthy. But, he had to be presentable at least. Adding to that, he had to be attractive and have good traits that could attract her. However, Lucas was like the rock bottom option, too ordinary, too unworthy of her. Especially what she heard from James not long ago, Lucas' image had already been destroyed completely to her. The more she thought about it, the more the frown on her face deepened. “Lucas, this is Casey and her friends. Come, let’s sit and talk. Let’s all get to know each other.” Charlotte smiled as she introduced them to each other. Lucas smiled. “My name is Lucas, it's a pleasure to meet you.” He then reached out his hand politely. To his surprise, Casey ignored him to keep sipping on her pineapple juice. She left Lucas's hand hanging in the air. He could only retract his hand, feeling slightly embarrassed. With everyone watching, the feeling couldn’t be helped. Seeing this, Charlotte could easily guess the situation. After all, she knew Casey more than anyone else. If she liked someone, she would have chatted with them a little and tried to get to know them. But if she wasn’t attracted to you, then her actions just now explained it all. Charlotte felt awkward not knowing how to address the situation. She could see that Lucas was sad. He walked off and was about to sit when James who was studying him closely noticed something. He smiled and spoke loudly. “Lucas, what gift did you buy for Charlotte's birthday? I am sure everyone will want to see. Come on, show it to us. At once, everyone’s eyes turned towards Lucas, especially at the pink bag he was holding.Latest Chapter

Chapter 43Lucas should have realized that exonerating himself in court would not silence the rumors. The university had brushed off the accusations, had issued their press release of "regrettable errors" and "issues of security," but the court of public opinion played by other rules. Rules that were unrelated to facts or official dismissal and all about the kind of psychology that plays havoc during mobs.He discovered how much different those regulations were three days later, when Dominic sent him a link with the message: You need to see this. It's bad.Lucas opened the link on his laptop and his stomach lurched. It was an Instagram account @JohnsonTruthExposed, opened two days prior but already with over three thousand followers. The bio read:Exposing the REAL Lucas Johnson - Elite Fraud, Academic Cheat, Fake Humble Rich Boy.The posts were vicious. The most recent featured a photo of Lucas from the Elite Summit—him sitting in his designer attire. This is a privilege. Chapter 42The disciplinary hearing was scheduled for 10 AM in the very conference room where Lucas had presented his case three weeks earlier for the plagiarism charge. Walking into the wood-paneled room was not the same this time. Lucas was no longer alone this time, was not pacing with papers he had collected on his own. Estelle stood beside him, carrying a slim leather portfolio, erect with a quiet confidence that was almost majestic. The members of the board were already seated—Dean Morrison had recused himself because of the intricacies of the previous case, and Vice Dean Patricia Sullivan was sitting in his stead. Dr. Wells was present again too, and three other staff members that Lucas was familiar with but had never had direct dealings with. They all looked up when Lucas and Estelle entered, and Lucas saw something dart across their faces when they saw Estelle with him.Acknowledgment. And a warning that was unfortunately familiar."Ms. Johnson," Vice Dean Sullivan said, her

Chapter 41Lucas sat at the library table looking at the defence plan for the morning hearing when he heard the front door creak open. Heels clicking on the marble floor ran through the villa with unmistakable authority."Lucas?" Estelle's voice sounded from the entrance hall. "We have to talk. Now.""How did you get here?" Lucas asked in a cold tobe "And how did you hear about the hearing?"Estelle put down her briefcase on the ground. "I have informants at the university. One of them told me of the new allegations hours after being made." She looked at Lucas"You don't have to be prepared to defend yourself," Estelle said firmly "I'm in charge of this. I swear."The words should have been soothing. They gave Lucas the cold shudders instead. There was something about where Estelle was standing—neither aggressive, precisely, nor reassuring. She was too still, too upright, as if she had been waiting."What do you do?" Lucas faltered. "The hearing tomorrow morning. I'm accused of falsif

Chapter 40The rumor had started the same day Lucas received the disciplinary notice, spreading like wildfire through parched grass. He arrived at his economics class the following morning to find that the damage was done.Lucas walked into the lecture hall and promptly felt the shift in atmosphere. Flattering gossip that was just seconds before ceased as students became conscious of him. Eyes which had already offered blunt acknowledgment now fled haphazardly, refusing to look him in the eye. The usual chatter of students trying to find a seat and exchanging hellos continued but around Lucas was a bubble of empty space as he made his way to his usual seat. The three chairs immediately around him were also inexplicably vacant, despite the room filling to capacity and students filling less-than-ideal seats rather than sitting next to him. Lucas reassured himself it was an oversight, that he was dreaming. But when Jennifer Martinez—who'd sat next to him all semester, who'd taken his not

Chapter 39Lucas was lost in thoughts concerning the recent happenings as a smirk was on his lips as he knew that it was overOr he thought soThen he received the email. He was in the café, focused on an international finance paper, when his laptop chimed for an incoming email. The sender was the Office of Academic Affairs, and the subject line made his stomach plummet: URGENT: Formal Summons - Disciplinary Board HearingLucas's fists tightened on the keyboard. No. Not again. This was not happening again. He opened the email with trembling fingers.Dear Mr. Johnson,You are hereby formally summoned to appear before the University Disciplinary Board on Thursday, May 16th at 10:00 AM in the Administrative Building, Conference Room 301.CHARGES: Academic dishonesty through falsified research results submitted in relation to your Economics 401 project entitled "Comparative Analysis of Microfinance Effectiveness in Sub-Saharan Africa."Lucas read the message three times, clenching his ch

Chapter 38Two weeks later……The third-floor conference room of the administrative building was more like a courtroom than an academic hearing. The walls were clad in dark wood paneling, and a massive mahogany table dominated the room. One side of the room was taken up by the Academic Integrity Committee—Dean Morrison flanked by Dr. Wells and two other professors Lucas had met but never formally met. Lucas sat alone on the opposite side, his folders full of evidence stacked in front of him, his laptop already out and up.It was Tuesday morning, fourteen days since hell had begun, and the room was cool, with sun outside in spring. Or at least Lucas was cool, his hands trembling slightly as he set out his equipment. He'd worn his best suit—the navy one he'd worn to the Elite Summit, so far back now—a last-ditch effort at appearing confident and authoritative he didn't actually feel.Charlotte and Dominic were sitting down as his only support team. Estelle had offered to go but Lucas had
