Chapter seven

“James, why do you always have something against Lucas? Can you cut him some slack already?” Lucas' dorm leader couldn’t take this anymore, he pointed at James and harrumphed.

Unfazed by his words, James laughed heartily. He usually had a joyous feeling whenever he bullied and ridiculed others.

He smiled before taking out the gift he bought.

It was a pink Chanel purse.

“Charlotte, this is my gift to you.” He put on a gentlemanly smile as he spoke. In the process, he took a glance at Lucas.

“Just wait and see, I’ll prove to Casey that I’m way cooler than you. Hahahaha. After all, you are only a poor thing.” These were James' thoughts before he looked away.

As expected, the captivating features of the purse attracted so many eyes, including Casey and her friends. Their eyes glistened.

“A Chanel purse? Isn't this around thirty thousand dollars?”

Someone said in the crowd, and at once all eyes went to James. He became the topic of discussion. The girls couldn’t take their eyes off him, as he had appeared to be a very generous guy.

Even Casey, who didn’t pay much interest at first, couldn’t help but give James a second look.

“Come on, it’s not even that expensive. My dad knows the manager of the store, so I got a discount of five thousand dollars since we are acquainted with each other too.” James smiled as he basked in the crowd's admiration.

Charlotte was different from everyone. She didn’t like James after what he had done, but since he appeared to be showing good intentions by giving her gifts in front of so many people, she just couldn’t bluntly reject him.

Sighing, she collected the present.

“The Chanel purse is among the latest luxurious items launched by Chanel. It’s very popular in the US. The price of this model in that country is exactly fifty thousand dollars.” Casey carefully said after examining the purse at a glance.

“Miss Casey, I didn’t know you were knowledgeable about antiques,” James said, looking stunned. Besides he wanted to imitate a conversation with her so this had just giving him the go ahead to.

Casey smiled. “I wanted to buy this brand, but the price was a little bit too expensive…”

James quickly cuts in. “I can give it to you as a present when you celebrate your birthday next time. It's twenty-five thousand dollars but nothing more. Though the store is far, I don’t mind. I can drive my BMW over to buy it for you.”

Casey smiled and remained silent.

She didn’t know Charlotte's schoolmate, James, in the past, but she had heard a few bad things about him.

Well, she had just confirmed that he wasn’t. Instead, he was a very magnanimous kind of person. Her smile brightened even more. She just had a good impression of him.

Following that, Lucas's Roommates also came forward and handed their gifts to Charlotte.

But of course, theirs were very cheap, ranging from a thousand dollars down to a few dollars. Of course, there was no way they would match up to what James brought. Once again, he became the man of the room.

As for Lucas, he didn’t say anything as he sat down quietly. He had intended to give Charlotte the gift after the event, but it didn’t seem like James would let things go his way.

After all, he wasn’t done with Lucas yet. He turned towards Lucas and spoke again.

“Lucas, everyone has presented their gift to Charlotte and you are who’s left. Come on, everyone is waiting. Just look at how attractive the plastic bag you are holding looks.” He might have said it casually, but there was a hint of sarcasm in his words.

“James, can you shut up already? Whatever Lucas has for me, I’ll gladly accept it. You don’t have to butt in, okay?” Charlotte hollered at James.

Lucas frowned.

If he had known, he would have waited half an hour for the sales agent to wrap the jewelry up properly. Perhaps James wouldn’t be pestering him by now.

But then, it wasn’t like he expected to see his face here. If he had known, he would have taken his time and made sure things were in perfect order. However, since he was here already, there was no way he could change things again.

“Charlotte, I bought you a necklace.” Lucas stood up, dipped his hand into the bag and brought out a small box of necklace and handed it to her.

Casey’s brow knitted, and the rest of her friends also gave Lucas a look of disdain. He was such a loser and a disgrace.

“Wow!”

When Charlotte collected the box, she gasped in shock. She opened the box and at once the necklace glistened.

“Sapphire! Did Lucas just gift me a sapphire necklace? This is from Cartier, right? Wow, such a luxurious item.” She carefully examined it as excitement beamed inside her.

“Lucas, tell us quickly. Where did you buy this necklace from? It must be expensive, right?” James said sarcastically. This made everyone laugh mockingly at Lucas.

Casey wasn’t exempted, either. She shook her head slightly. She thought that since he was poor, he might be a man of integrity.

Since that was the case, she didn’t have to save his face at all.

“The sapphire necklace is a limited edition. There are only 100 pieces produced worldwide. It’s priced around 1.5 million dollars, yet it's being found here?”

Casey was good with antiques after all, so recognizing such an item was very easy for her to do.

“These days there are so many counterfeit goods in the market. I won’t be surprised that this loser here got one and thinks he can fool just anyone. Tch! You must have bought it for 300 dollars only to come present it as a luxurious item.”

Casey spoke rudely as she stared at Lucas with so much disdain in her eyes. He made her feel like puking after presenting himself so shamelessly. Did he think that no one would find out?

On the other hand, Charlotte had thought Lucas would buy her a gadget or something cheap. She didn’t expect him to buy a counterfeit item.

But that didn’t make her sad. She appreciated his effort regardless.

“Lucas, thank you for buying me a gift. Next time, you don’t have to buy something this expensive. Something cheaper would have been better.”

Lucas felt like crying, but no tears were coming out. How was he supposed to explain to them that this was the real deal when it was clear that no matter how lengthy his explanation might be, none of them would believe him?

Already their scornful gazes were piercing his heart. Saying anything might fan the flames of hatred and disgust they had for him.

Amidst this, Casey looked at Charlotte and asked.

“Where did you find such a shameless person?”

However, Charlotte quickly brushed it off by changing the topic.

“Come on, it’s my birthday today. We are all friends. Come, let’s toast to me.”

She thought about using such means to lighten the mood, but it didn’t work. Casey and her friends remained unmoved, staring at Lucas with disdain in their eyes.

At the back, James and his friend were delighted that things had turned out this way and Lucas had become the black sheep in the room.

As for Lucas, he didn’t want to be caught in between Charlotte and her friends. Already he was feeling awkward after being considered an eyesore by everyone.

Standing up, he looked at Charlotte.

“Happy birthday to you once more. I just remembered that I have something important to do, so I’ll leave first. Goodbye, everyone.”

Since he wasn’t needed, what’s the need of staying here even further? He turned towards the door and walked off. Charlotte tried calling out to him, but to no avail. His mind had been set and that was it.

There was no turning back!

Chapter 121A few months later....For three months, Lucas had lived in this self-imposed exile. The sharp, promising scholarship student was gone, a ghost replaced by this pale, focused operative. His crime had been curiosity; his sentence, social and academic obliteration. The Sentinel System—the university’s all-seeing, all-judging digital panopticon designed for “community harmony and proactive wellness”—had been turned against him with surgical precision. It had started with a research fellowship under Professor Alistair Finch, a charismatic pioneer in campus predictive analytics. Lucas, diving deep into the Sentinel’s source code for his thesis on algorithmic bias, had found the “Oracles”: a set of privileged, hidden administrative accounts that could inject data, alter behavioral flags, and manipulate the all-important “Civic Trust Score” without a trace. The Oracles weren’t a bug; they were a backdoor, woven into the system’s very fabric. His forensic trail led not to a hacker

His intelligence was vast, scattered across encrypted drives, cloud snippets, and the labyrinthine corridors of his own memory. To wage a war from inside the enemy's walls, he needed it weaponized: organized, accessible, and protected with the kind of failsafes that would make attacking him the costliest mistake Sentinel could ever make.He began by designing the architecture. This wasn't a simple folder of documents. It was a strategic database, a war room in digital form. He used a custom, open-source database platform, heavily modified and hardened, running on a standalone machine never connected to any network. He called it **Project Labyrinth**.**Labyrinth** was divided into interconnected sectors, each a pillar of the coming offensive.**Sector A: The Human Cost.** Here, he compiled the dossiers of every verified victim. It was a question of what **Lucas Johnson** would do next. He stood at a precipice defined by three distinct, terrifying paths.**Path One: Acceptance.** He could play the part. He could stop his investigation, allow the “tests” to conclude, and accept the full inheritance when it was offered.
