Chapter 10: The Price of a Signature

The administrative wing of the Capital Academy was a stark contrast to the chaotic energy of the Grand Martial Pavilion. Here, the floors were carpeted in deep crimson wool, and the walls were lined with heavy, sound-dampening mahogany panels designed to keep the backroom dealings of high society strictly private.

Vice-Principal Thaddeus Cole sat behind a massive desk carved from solid spiritual oak, lazily swirling a glass of imported elven wine. On his desk, a glowing ledger displayed the recent "endowment" from the Cross Corporation. Four million credits, neatly masked as a charitable contribution to the academy’s infrastructure.

Cole’s thin lips curled into a self-satisfied smile. It was the perfect transaction. The Vance Clan’s prime line had been dormant for two years, led by a boy who was too busy chasing a secondary-class girl to notice his own sister being pushed out of the rankings. It was a victimless crime in the grand scheme of high society—until his terminal suddenly let out a sharp, ear-splitting screech.

The holographic seal of the Sovereign Vance Clan burst into the center of the room, burning a bright, aggressive silver.

Before Cole could even reach out to minimize the intrusion, the heavy mahogany double doors of his office didn't just open—they violently shattered inward. The heavy wood split down the middle, the hinges tearing clean out of the wall as a massive wave of oppressive spiritual resonance flooded the room.

Cole’s wine glass shattered in his hand. He scrambled backward in his leather chair, his eyes widening in absolute horror as the temperature in the room plummeted to near freezing.

Austin Vance stepped through the dust, his long, dark coat billowing slightly around his ankles. The silver dragon embroidered on his collar seemed to catch the ambient red light of the office, gleaming with a terrifying, predatory intensity. Behind him, two armored Vance enforcers stood like silent monoliths in the corridor, blocking the exit.

"Vice-Principal Cole," Austin said, his voice level, calm, and entirely devoid of human warmth.

"Y-Young Master Austin!" Cole stammered, frantically wiping the spilled wine from his expensive trousers. He tried to force his usual mask of academic authority, but his knees were trembling violently under the desk. "What is the meaning of this?! This is an egregious violation of academy protocol! You cannot simply destroy administrative property—"

"I am the Prime Heir of a Sovereign Clan," Austin interrupted, taking a slow, measured step forward. Each footstep felt like a physical hammer hitting Cole’s chest, suffocating his internal meridians. "In this jurisdiction, my family *built* the protocols you use to protect yourself. I do not negotiate with staff."

Austin reached the edge of the desk, placing both hands flat on the polished wood. He leaned forward slightly, his fierce, piercing eyes locking onto Cole’s pale face.

"Let's skip the performance," Austin murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous, chilling register. "The fourth advancement slot for the Regional Tournament belongs to Olivia Vance. Explain to me, in precise detail, why Harrison Cross’s name is currently occupying her position on the public boards."

Cole swallowed hard, his throat completely dry. "The... the committee received a formal petition from the Cross Corporation. Harrison just returned from overseas training. His tier evaluation is incredibly high, and according to the academy bylaws, a special evaluation match can be called if a challenger possesses superior spiritual—"

"A petition backed by four million spirit credits, transferred to your private offshore ledger at 11:42 PM last night," Austin stated flatly.

Cole froze, the remaining color draining from his face until he looked like a corpse. "How... how did you—"

"You spent twenty years climbing the academic ladder, Thaddeus, yet you still handle financial fraud like an amateur," Austin said, a dark, mocking amusement flickering in his eyes. He straightened up, pulling a thin, crystalline data-drive from his pocket and tossing it carelessly onto the desk. "On that drive, you will find a complete forensic breakdown of every bribe you have accepted from the Cross and Sterling factions over the last twenty-four months. If that data reaches the Academy High Council, asset liquidation will be the least of your concerns. The Vance legal team will ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in the deep-sea extraction camps."

Cole dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he stared at the crystal drive. "Please... Young Master Austin... I was misled! Harrison assured me the Vance Clan wouldn't interfere! He said you were... he said you didn't care about the martial rankings anymore!"

"Harrison is an idiot who confuses my patience for weakness," Austin said coldly. "And you are the fool who believed him."

Austin turned his back, walking toward the shattered doorway, but paused just before the threshold.

"Tomorrow afternoon, the special evaluation match will proceed exactly as scheduled," Austin commanded, his tone carrying the absolute weight of a decree. "But the bracket will be updated. Harrison Cross will not be fighting a freshman. He will be facing the Prime Line."

Cole looked up, his eyes wide with shock. "You... you want to invoke the Heir Intervention Directive? Against Harrison?"

"Update the system before nine o'clock tomorrow morning, Vice-Principal," Austin said, his voice echoing through the quiet corridor as he walked away. "If my name is not on that board by dawn, I will liquidate your entire family's assets before noon. Choose your next signature very carefully."

The heavy scent of rain and ozone still lingered over the Great Capital Bridge, but the atmosphere within the central courtyard of the Vance Estate had shifted entirely. What should have been a period of celebration for securing the northern trade artery and absorbing ten thousand provincial troops had turned into a silent, feverish war room.In the subterranean command center beneath the manor, projection screens hummed with green and gold streams of data. Enforcers rushed between tactical maps, mapping out supply lines, spirit-gem reserves, and defensive arrays across the Capital District. At the head of the dark iron council table stood Olivia Vance. At nineteen, Austin’s younger sister possessed the same sharp, aristocratic features of the Vance bloodline, though her posture usually leaned toward studious grace rather than military command.
