Chapter 5: The Grand Feast of the Imperial Lounge
last update2026-07-21 02:47:30

The Imperial Lounge was the absolute pinnacle of high society indulgence in the Capital, a multi-tiered crystal pavilion floating gracefully over an artificial spiritual lake. Tonight, the grandest V.I.P. hall was bathed in shifting gold and violet lights, rented out entirely for Harrison Cross’s welcome home celebration.

Vivienne Sterling glided through the glass double doors, her chest held high as she scanned the glamorous room. She had spent the entire hover-car ride convincing herself that Austin’s sudden spine was just a pathetic, desperate attempt to gain leverage over her.

"Vivienne! Over here!"

Chloe Sinclair waved her over from a plush velvet booth where a dozen of their old academy classmates were already drinking expensive alchemical champagne. Sitting right in the center, looking impeccably handsome in a tailored midnight-blue suit, was Harrison Cross.

The moment Harrison saw Vivienne walk in, his eyes lit up with a possessive, familiar warmth. He stood up, smoothly stepping past the others to meet her halfway. "Vivienne. You look absolutely radiant tonight. I was worried you wouldn't make it."

"Of course I came, Harrison," Vivienne said, her voice dropping into a soft, sweet lilt that she hadn't used with Austin in years. She intentionally let Harrison take her hand, leaning into his side just enough to show off their closeness to the room. "Someone was throwing a ridiculous tantrum at home, but I don't let minor inconveniences ruin a celebration."

Chloe laughed, taking a long sip from her crystal flute. "Oh, let me guess. The loyal watchdog finally barked? Honestly, Viv, you’ve spoiled Austin too much. The moment a man from a secondary branch gets to live in the Grand Arch district, he starts forgetting his place."

"Let him play his little games," Vivienne sneered, her eyes flashing with absolute arrogance. "He went so far as to change the biometric codes on the penthouse door. He thinks I’ll cry and beg to be let back in. He has no idea that by tomorrow morning, my mother’s investments will have doubled, and he'll be the one begging for my forgiveness just to stay connected to the Sterling name."

Harrison’s lips curled into a smooth, predatory smile. He raised his glass toward her. "Then let’s forget about the background noise tonight. To new beginnings, and to the future of the Capital."

"To the future!" the crowd cheered in unison, glasses clinking under the brilliant chandeliers.

Vivienne basked in the attention, completely intoxicated by the luxury, the flashing cameras of the high-society reporters, and Harrison’s constant, flattering whispers in her ear. For three hours, she felt like the undisputed queen of the Capital, entirely convinced that Austin Vance was currently sitting alone in the dark, staring at his phone, drowning in regret.

Then, the clock struck midnight.

A sharp, piercing alert suddenly shattered the music in the hall. It didn't come from the lounge's sound system—it came simultaneously from the communicators of every single member of the Sterling and Cross factions present in the room.

Vivienne frowned, pulling her device from her clutch. The screen was blinking a violent, chaotic crimson.

Before she could even read the first line, the grand glass doors of the Imperial Lounge were violently thrown open. A squad of heavy-set, armored enforcers from the Lower-District Underground Syndicate marched into the pristine hall, their heavy spiritual resonance instantly crushing the lively atmosphere.

The lead enforcer, a scarred man with a cold, metallic voice, swept his eyes over the wealthy crowd until they locked onto Vivienne.

"Vivienne Sterling?" the enforcer barked, his voice echoing off the crystal walls.

Vivienne’s pride immediately flared up, fueled by the champagne. "Who do you think you are to interrupt this private gathering?! Do you know who my family is?!"

"We know exactly who your family is," the enforcer sneered, pulling out an official holographic warrant that projected into the center of the room. "As of ten minutes ago, your mother's primary margin accounts have been completely liquidated. Your brother Tristan has been dragged out of the Capital Academy dorms for fraud, and your family villa is currently being boarded up. You have an outstanding debt of 4.2 million spirit credits due immediately."

The entire room went dead silent. The classmates who had just been dynamic and flattering instantly took three steps back, distancing themselves from Vivienne as if she carried a plague.

Vivienne’s face turned paper-white, her breath leaving her lungs in a horrific rush. "That’s impossible! Austin’s signature guarantees those accounts! He represents the Vance assets!"

"Not anymore," the enforcer said coldly, signaling his men to step forward. "Austin Vance legally revoked every single financial guarantee, froze your secondary lines, and filed a formal predatory fraud report against your entire bloodline three hours ago. You're completely cut off, Miss Sterling. And since you signed as the secondary guarantor on your mother's gambling debts... your expensive jewelry, your designer clothes, and that purse in your hand belong to the Syndicate now. Strip them off. Right now."

Vivienne spun around frantically, her terrified eyes locking onto Harrison. "Harrison! Help me! Speak to them! Tell them the Cross Corporation will cover it!"

Harrison, who had been standing proudly by her side just seconds ago, slowly let go of her hand. He took a deliberate step backward, his face turning entirely indifferent as he looked at the high-society reporters who were already snapping pictures of the disaster.

"The Cross Corporation does not interfere with Syndicate debt, Vivienne," Harrison said, his tone smooth, detached, and utterly freezing. "And frankly, I cannot have my family’s name associated with this kind of financial ruin. Please handle your family affairs outside my venue."

Vivienne stood frozen in the center of the blinking lights, the heavy jewelry being violently pulled from her wrists by the enforcers, her grand illusion of power completely shattering into the dirt.

The heavy scent of rain and ozone still lingered over the Great Capital Bridge, but the atmosphere within the central courtyard of the Vance Estate had shifted entirely.
