Chapter 8: The Price of Gossip

A suffocating silence gripped the courtyard. The surrounding students, who had been snickering just moments before, now stood completely rigid, barely daring to breathe. The immense, crushing pressure radiating from Austin’s twenty-two-year-old body wasn't just physical—it was the weight of a multi-billion credit empire and a Sovereign bloodline.

Chloe Sinclair felt a cold sweat break out across her neck. Her mind raced frantically, trying to find a way to laugh it off, but one look at Austin’s fierce, piercing eyes told her that if she made a single wrong move, the Sinclair family would be bankrupt by nightfall.

"Austin... I—I was just joking," Chloe stammered, her voice losing all of its high-society venom. She took a step back, her expensive heels clicking nervously against the stone. "We were just having a lighthearted conversation with Olivia about the upcoming tournament. There's no need to bring corporate matters into academy business."

"A lighthearted conversation?" Austin took a single step forward, and the senior martial students flanking Chloe instinctively raised their hands defensively, their spiritual energy flaring in pure, instinctual panic.

Austin didn't even glance at them. His eyes remained locked on Chloe. "When you insulted my sister, you insulted the Prime Line of the Vance Clan. When you spread rumors about my personal life to diminish her standing, you crossed a line that your family cannot afford to pay for."

He reached into his heavy coat, pulling out his personal terminal. The sleek, dark screen reflected the pale, terrified faces of the crowd.

"I believe your father’s logistics company is currently relying on three major shipping corridors controlled by the Vance maritime network," Austin said, his voice entirely flat, carrying the cold detachedness of a forty-year-old corporate executioner. "Let's see how lighthearted he feels when those routes are permanently closed to Sinclair cargo."

"No! Please, Young Master Austin!" Chloe gasped, completely abandoning her pride. She stepped forward, her hands trembling. "I apologize! Olivia, I’m sorry! I shouldn't have spoken about your family like that. Please, don't involve my father."

Olivia looked at Chloe’s desperate, sniveling expression, then up at her brother. For the past two years, she had watched Austin tolerate every insult from the Sterlings, growing more distant and weak by the day. She had cried herself to sleep nights on end, fearing her brilliant brother was gone forever. But looking at him now, standing tall and utterly unbothered by the elite scions before him, a deep, overwhelming sense of pride bloomed in her nineteen-year-old chest.

"Brother," Olivia whispered softly, tugging lightly on his dark coat. "Let it go for now. The Grand Martial Pavilion has strict rules about corporate retaliation on campus grounds. Don't let her drag your name into an academy tribunal."

Austin looked down at his younger sister. The freezing indifference in his eyes instantly melted into a warm, protective gaze. He knew Olivia was right—not because he feared a tribunal, but because destroying the Sinclairs here would be messy. He wanted them to suffer slowly, watching their social status crumble alongside the Sterlings.

"For my sister's sake, you have until the end of the day to pack your things and vacate the Grand Martial Pavilion's elite lounge rooms, Chloe," Austin commanded, turning his back on her completely. "If I see you or your sycophants within ten feet of Olivia again, the shipping routes will be the least of your father's worries."

"Y-Yes, of course! Thank you, Young Master!" Chloe choked out, her face completely flushed with humiliation as she grabbed her friends and practically fled toward the main academy building.

The surrounding crowd quickly dispersed, terrified of catching Austin's gaze. Within seconds, the courtyard was empty, leaving only the two siblings standing by the obsidian transport.

Olivia couldn't hold it back anymore. Tears spilled over her cheeks as she threw her arms around Austin’s waist. "I thought... I thought you didn't care about us anymore, Austin. I thought you forgot about the clan."

Austin held his sister tightly, the memory of her crippled spiritual core from his past life flashing through his mind. A fierce, lethal resolve solidified deep within his soul. He would tear down the sky before he let anyone touch her again.

"I am so sorry, Olivia," Austin whispered into her hair, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "I was blind, but I am awake now. No one will ever look down on you again. I promise."

He pulled back, wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb, before his expression turned serious. "Now, tell me about this tournament slot Chloe was talking about. Who exactly is trying to steal your advancement?"

The heavy scent of rain and ozone still lingered over the Great Capital Bridge, but the atmosphere within the central courtyard of the Vance Estate had shifted entirely.
