CHAPTER NINE

The hall was buzzing with sounds of excitement, voices echoing with both laughter and excitement.

Patrick was the only one who didn’t have a smile on his face, sauntering through the crowd with a deadpan expression.

With a narrowed gaze, he scoured, eyes moving from one corner to the other.

He had seen everyone he had in mind: Lady Clover, Grandfather Haney, and even his cousin.

But one person was missing: Heather, his sister.

She was one of the main reasons why he had decided to attend that party, but while he was still scanning for her, one of the Tamer council members ran into the hall screaming, “Beasts have this town! All the Tamers have been asked to assemble at once!”

That was a clarion call, and no one was meant to ignore it.

The party came to a forceful end, the weak running to hide.

Patrick joined the assembly, ignoring the eyes of the Emperor at him in disdain.

“Ohh, isn't that the weakest of the weakest rank, the one that never levels up?” A tamer said as he walked in to join the party that was going for the raid in the dungeon. The other person replied,

“Don't say that. Don't you know he can hear you?”

He did hear them but acted as if he didn't because he was always seen that way, so he was used to the treatment.

“Like we all know, this is a D-ranked dungeon that was just discovered, and we've been contracted by the Tamer Council to clear it. This would likely be a walk in the courtyard, but don't let your guard down because anything is possible in the dungeon,” Jarden Ashcroft, the leader of the party who was a B-ranked Tamer, said as they stood at the mouth of the dungeon in preparation to the raid. They all acted nonchalant as he kept talking to the Emperor about the importance of the raid while Patrick went to get things ready.

They were packed and ready to move into the dungeon. This was the first dungeon raid Patrick would ever experience, and he was a bit nervous.

“Don't die on us F F-ranked weakest,” A tamer said and laughed as they went into the dungeon. A girl who was almost the same age as Patrick walked up to him and said,

“Don't be wary of those Tamers; they are all rotten eggs.”

Vera Patterson, a C-ranked healer who was among the party and knew Patrick, was among the few people who were kind to Patrick, and she cheered him up sometimes when he was being treated in a bad way.

As they got into the dungeon, which was a cave-type dungeon, they walked for some time before they came across monsters, and the monsters all ranged from rank D down to F. They kept clearing the floors in the dungeon like a breeze, and there were few or no injuries, so the two healers in the party had less mana expended.

The chatter in the party became louder as they all began feeling at ease because of how easy it was for them in the dungeon, and one of them said,

“I wished all dungeons were like this.”

They all laughed as he said it, and they found somewhere they had to rest before they continued their dungeon-clearing. After they rested, they continued and went high in the floors, then the unexpected happened. The floor of the dungeon began shaking violently, which made them lose their sense of direction because it was the shuffling of the floors that made the floors shake. They all thought it was a monster that lived inside the floors, but there was no monster coming, they continued, and the floor kept shaking from time to time, without any monster coming after the first five shakes.

They kept chatting as they went. Then a rushing wing came from the opposite direction in which they were coming, they all stopped and went silent as they looked, and the leader who was in front lifted his hand, signaling them to stop.

“Something isn't right; the atmosphere has changed. This doesn't feel like the dungeon we entered,” Jarden said as he signaled them to take positions. Then a roar was heard from the darkness of the dungeon, which sent shivers into their spines. Jarden, who realized the danger that was ahead, yelled at everyone,

“Fall back, fall back. We're leaving this dungeon!”

With shock on their faces, everyone began running, but before they could take more than five steps, the ground below them gave way as they all fell into a spacious enclosure which had statues that sat around inside the hall with different types of weapons in their hands, and ahead of them was a beast which was feared amongTamers, the Pyroclasm.

This was a majestic phoenix-like creature engulfed in ever-burning flames. Its roar ignites the air with fiery embers and can incinerate obstacles in its path, channelling intense mana through its blazing plumage. Fear struck everyone as they saw the beast in the chambers, then one of them yelled in fear,

“I thought they said this was a D-ranked dungeon? What is that thing doing here?”

Out of human instinct, they all began running towards what looked like an entrance, but the first two people who took to their heels were already found on the floor with their heads out of their bodies. Seeing this, their screams echoed through the chambers as Jarden yelled in command,

“Gather around, everyone, we need to make plans if we want to survive this.”

The ladies in the group were already scared that they couldn't move their legs, but sat on the ground. Things were already getting heated, and as for Patrick, he was behind the party, which he felt was the safest place to be, but he heard a thud coming closer from behind, as he turned to see what it was. It was one of the sitting statues that were already close to them. The statue raised the sword in its hand and gave a large swing towards them, then Patrick grabbed Vera, who was close to him, and dived to the ground as he yelled,

 “Behind us!”

Before they could react, some of the party members were already cut in half. This was the end for them; they all saw death, and they knew it was coming for them. Then Patrick yelled again,

 “Run towards the pyroclasm.”

“Are you mad? that's running to our instant death,” A tamer said in fear, but Patrick had already taken Vera by the hand and ran off towards the pyroclasm as he replied,

 “Well, die either way.”

With no other option, the remaining ran with them. On getting 15 feet close to the beast, the pyroclasm took a fast swoop and went directly towards Patrick, who thought he was about to die, but the beast drove right into him. He felt a burning sensation as he yelled for help. As they looked at him rolling on the floor, they ran up to the place where the pyroclasm was, and the statue stopped chasing them, but by now, more than half of them were already dead.

Patrick was still rolling on the ground and begging for help when his body gave out a huge explosion that sent the statue towards the wall. Then he stood up, and this time the burning had stopped, but his body was still on fire. Then he heard a voice in his head that said,

 “Flame adaptation mastered.”

Then, as the other statues came rushing to him, he raised his hands as if he wanted to block off their attack, but flames burst out of his hands as the statues went flying. Two of the statues were already destroyed, and the voice said again,

 “Golems destroyed, leveling up.”

As the voice finished its sentence, the flames around Patrick grew larger in a burst as the remaining statues came charging towards him. He raised his hand towards them as a large blast came off and destroyed the rest. He fell to the ground, but most of his body was already burnt because of the flames of the pyroclasm.

“Heal him, get him fixed,’ Jarden said as Vera ran towards him.

For a moment, there was no falling. There was only the sensation of being suspended somewhere between one heartbeat and the next, as though the world had forgotten what it was supposed to do with me.Then I hit something. Not stone. Not earth.Something cold and hard struck my back, and the impact drove the breath from my lungs. I tried to move, but my body would not answer. My eyes opened. There was no sky above me.There was no forest. There was no gate. There was only darkness.I lay on a surface that looked black but felt strangely warm beneath my palms. When I pushed myself upright, the darkness around me shifted. Not moved.Shifted.Like something enormous had turned in its sleep.I remembered the last thing the Hollow King had said.Your first mistake was believing the prison was beneath the mountain.Your second was believing I was the prisoner. Then the ground had opened. And I had fallen. My hand went instinctively to my sword. It was still there. The golden blade lay beside

The ground exploded upward.Stone tore apart beneath us.I hit the ground hard as the circular floor broke into pieces, and for a moment there was nothing beneath my boots except empty air. Lucy shouted my name. Someone grabbed the back of my coat. I felt myself being dragged sideways just before a column of black stone erupted from the place where I had been standing. The impact threw dust across the valley.I rolled twice before coming to a stop.My sword was still in my hand. That surprised me.I looked around.Lucy was on her knees several feet away, one hand pressed against the ground.Heather had fallen beside Borius.Dwayne was already standing.Seth had been thrown almost to the edge of the stone ring, while Arlen was struggling to get back onto his feet. Then something moved inside the opening.A hand emerged. It was pale.Human-looking.Five fingers. It gripped the edge of the broken stone.Another hand appeared beside it.Then a head rose between them.I froze. It had my fa

Every voice in the forest spoke my name. Not loudly. That was what made it worse. The sound came from everywhere at once, carried between the black trees in a hundred different tones, some deep, some whispering, some sounding like children, others like people I had never met. Yet every voice said the same thing.“Patrick.”I stood completely still. The sword was still in my hand. Its light had faded, leaving only a faint warmth in the hilt, but I could feel something moving through the blade, as though the weapon itself had not finished reacting to what had happened beneath the mountain.Lucy came to my side.“Don't answer them.”“I wasn't planning to.”“Good.”Behind us, the stone gate remained closed. The words carved into it were still visible.THE PRISON IS NOW OPEN.I looked toward the distant figure. The Hollow King.Even from this distance, I could tell it was enormous. It stood beyond the black trees, perhaps on the other side of the valley, perhaps much farther away. The final chain broke.I knew it before I heard the sound because the entire shaft seemed to hold its breath. The enormous length of black metal hanging above the giant tightened for one impossible second, every link drawn taut beneath the pressure of whatever had been imprisoned below us, and then the chain snapped with a force that shook the mountain from its roots. The sound was deafening.I was thrown against the wall.Stone struck my shoulder. The sword nearly flew from my hand.“Patrick!”Lucy.Her voice came from somewhere above me.I looked up.She was clinging to a narrow ledge, one hand gripping a jutting piece of stone while Heather reached down toward her.“I'm all right!”The lie came automatically. My shoulder was burning. My ribs hurt. But I was alive. That was enough.Below me, the giant moved. Not quickly. It did not need to.Its enormous arm came free from the remaining restraints, and the movement alone sent a wave of dust and shattered stone through the shaft.I lo

The mountain breathed. There was no mistaking it this time. The sound rolled through the chamber from somewhere beneath our feet, deep and slow, carrying enough force that dust fell from the ceiling and the stone pillars trembled around us. It sounded like the first breath of something enormous that had been buried for so long that the act of breathing had become an event in itself.I could feel the movement through the soles of my boots.In.The entire chamber seemed to draw inward.Out.The floor pushed upward beneath us.Then the darkness swallowed everything. For a moment I could see nothing.I reached instinctively for Lucy and felt her hand close around mine.“I'm here,” she whispered.I squeezed her hand.“Stay close.”A faint blue light returned. It came from the symbols carved into the pillars. One after another, they began to glow. The first symbol. Then the second. Then the third. The light travelled around the chamber in a widening circle until the entire room was illumina

The fog was coming toward us.Trees disappeared behind it. Branches vanished. The ground itself seemed to be erased beneath itAnd inside that moving wall were faces. My faces.Dozens of them. Then hundreds.Every pale oval turned toward us as the fog advanced, every mouth stretched into the same impossible smile I had seen in the pool.“Run!” Borius shouted. That broke whatever had frozen inside me.I grabbed Lucy's hand.“Gate!”We ran.Heather was already moving, pulling Seth forward while Borius stayed close enough to catch him if his injured leg failed. Dwayne disappeared into the trees on our right, but I knew better than to think he had abandoned us. He was moving parallel to the group, searching for anything that might give us another route. The stone gate grew larger as we approached.Up close, it was enormous. Two walls of dark stone rose from the earth on either side of the opening, each one covered in carvings so old that roots had grown through them. The structure looked
