THE GALA INVITATION

The mirror showed a stranger looking back at Ethan. The face was handsome in a way his old face had never been. Sharp jawline. Clear skin. Eyes that held a cold confidence he had not felt in years. The system had done its work perfectly. Every detail was flawless. Even his own mother would not recognize him now.

"Daniel Young," Ethan said out loud, testing the name on his tongue. The voice that came out was deeper. Smoother. The accent was foreign but not quite identifiable. Somewhere between British and American with a hint of European sophistication. "Born in Singapore. Raised in Switzerland. Made my fortune in tech investments. No living relatives. No ties to anyone."

The system interface flickered in his peripheral vision. It displayed his new identity documents. Passport. Driver's license. Business cards. Everything a billionaire needed to move through high society without raising suspicion. The bank account showed a balance that made Ethan's eyes go wide. Fifty million dollars. All of it fake but untraceable. Good enough to get him through the doors of the gala.

He spent the next hour studying the guest list. The system had compiled detailed profiles on every attendee. Their names. Their businesses. Their secrets. Their weaknesses. Ethan memorized everything. He needed to blend in. He needed to look like he belonged.

The gala was being held at the Imperial Grand Hotel. The most exclusive venue in the city. Only the wealthiest and most powerful people received invitations. The Wus had rented out the entire ballroom. Crystal chandeliers. Marble floors. A string quartet playing classical music. Champagne flowing from fountains.

Ethan arrived at exactly eight o'clock. He stepped out of a black car that the system had arranged. His suit was custom made. Italian silk. Dark navy with a subtle sheen. His shoes were polished to a mirror finish. His watch was a Patek Philippe that cost more than most people made in a decade.

The doorman barely glanced at his invitation. The name Daniel Young was already on the list. The doorman nodded respectfully and waved him inside.

The ballroom was overwhelming. Ethan had grown up in wealth. He remembered the parties his mother used to host. The elegance. The glamour. But this was different. This was obscene. The jewelry on display could feed a small country for a year. The champagne was the most expensive brand in the world. The food was prepared by a Michelin starred chef flown in from France.

Ethan took a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. He did not drink it. He just held it. A prop. Something to occupy his hands while his eyes scanned the room.

Sophia was standing near the center of the ballroom. She was wearing a dress of deep crimson silk. It hugged her curves in a way that made men stare. Diamonds sparkled at her throat and ears. She looked like a queen. But Ethan noticed the tension in her shoulders. The way her smile did not quite reach her eyes. She kept glancing toward the exit. Like she was looking for a way out.

Marcus was beside her. His hand possessively wrapped around her waist. He was talking loudly to a group of businessmen. His voice carried across the room. "The acquisition will go through next week. The Chen family assets are finally ours. That old fool never knew how to run a business. His son was even worse. Some loser who ran away and disappeared."

Ethan felt his jaw tighten. The Chen family assets. His mother's company. The business she had built from nothing. The inheritance that had been stolen from him. Marcus was gloating about it openly. He had no shame. No decency.

Sophia flinched slightly when Marcus mentioned Ethan. Her smile faltered for just a moment. Then she recovered. She looked down at her champagne glass. Her knuckles were white around the stem.

Ethan moved through the crowd. He was careful to stay on the edges. Observing. Waiting. The system was feeding him information constantly. The names of the people around him. Their net worth. Their connections. Their secrets. He absorbed it all.

Helen Wu was at the center of the room. She sat at a raised table like a queen on a throne. Her dress was black and severe. Her hair was pulled back in a tight bun. Her eyes were cold and calculating. She surveyed the room like a hawk watching for prey.

Ethan studied her. She was older than he remembered. The years had carved lines into her face. But her posture was still ramrod straight. Her gaze was still razor sharp. She had not softened with age. She had only become more dangerous.

A man approached Helen. He leaned down and whispered something in her ear. Helen's expression did not change. She nodded once. The man walked away. The system flagged him. Marcus's personal assistant. Someone who handled the dirty work. Someone who knew where the bodies were buried.

Ethan made a mental note. That man would be useful. He was a weak link. A man who could be pressured. Turned. Used.

"Quite the spectacle, is it not?"

Ethan turned. A woman was standing beside him. She was older, in her fifties. Elegantly dressed. Her eyes were warm and intelligent. She smiled at him.

"First time at one of these events?" she asked. "You look a little lost."

Ethan forced a smile. "Is it that obvious?"

"Only to someone who knows what to look for." The woman extended her hand. "Eleanor Vance. I own a small publishing house. Nothing compared to the giants in this room, but I do alright."

Ethan shook her hand. The system supplied her profile. Eleanor Vance. Widow. Inherited her husband's business. Known for her philanthropic work. No connection to the Wu family. A potential ally.

"Daniel Young," Ethan said. "I am visiting from overseas. A friend of a friend mentioned this event. I thought I would see what all the fuss is about."

Eleanor laughed. "The fuss is about money. Power. The usual things that bring these people together." She lowered her voice. "Be careful, Mr. Young. This is not a crowd that welcomes outsiders. They will smile at you while they pick your pockets."

"I appreciate the warning," Ethan said. "But I have been around wealthy people before. I know how to handle myself."

"I am sure you do." Eleanor studied him with curious eyes. "There is something about you. Something familiar. Have we met before?"

Ethan's heart skipped a beat. "I do not think so. I have only been in the country for a few days."

"Perhaps I am mistaken." Eleanor shrugged. "Old age. Memory is the first thing to go." She smiled again. "Enjoy the evening, Mr. Young. I hope you find what you are looking for."

She walked away. Ethan watched her go. The system flagged her as low risk. She was not a threat. But she was perceptive. Too perceptive. He would need to be careful around her.

He turned back to the room. Marcus had moved away from his group. He was now standing with Helen. They were speaking quietly. The system enhanced the audio. Ethan could hear every word.

"The acquisition is almost complete," Marcus said. "The last of the Chen assets will be ours by the end of the month. The old man is completely broken. He barely even leaves his room anymore."

"Good," Helen said. "And the son?"

"Still hiding. My men are searching. They will find him eventually. He cannot run forever."

Helen's eyes narrowed. "Do not underestimate him, Marcus. He is more dangerous than you think. His mother was the same way. She nearly destroyed us before we stopped her."

Marcus laughed. "Stopped her? You killed her, Mother. You drove her car off that cliff yourself. Do not pretend you did not enjoy it."

Helen's face remained expressionless. "I did what had to be done. She was a threat. Just like her son is a threat. We must eliminate him before he becomes a problem."

Ethan felt a cold rage wash over him. His mother. They were talking about his mother. Helen had murdered her. Driven her car off a cliff. Made it look like an accident. All those years of grief. All those years of wondering. And now he had the answer.

The system pinged. It had recorded the entire conversation. Ethan had proof. Audio evidence of Helen confessing to murder. This was gold. This was the weapon he had been searching for.

He needed more. He needed to get closer. To plant surveillance. To gather intelligence. He needed to find a way into Helen's inner circle.

He moved across the room. He stopped at the bar. He ordered a glass of water. He sipped it slowly while he scanned the crowd.

Helen was still speaking to Marcus. She was gesturing toward the stage. A small orchestra was setting up. The charity auction was about to begin. This was his chance.

Ethan approached Helen's table. He was careful to look casual. Unconcerned. He pretended to study the auction program. He was close enough to hear her conversation. Close enough to study her movements.

Helen noticed him. Her eyes swept over him. Assessing. Calculating. He could almost see the gears turning in her head. Who was this stranger? What did he want? Was he a threat or an opportunity?

She smiled. It was a practiced smile. Warm on the surface. Cold underneath. "You are new here," she said. "I have not seen you before."

Ethan looked up. He returned her smile. "I am Daniel Young. I arrived in the city recently. A friend of a friend suggested I attend. I am looking for investment opportunities."

Helen's eyes lit up. Investment opportunities. That was the magic word. Wealthy people always wanted more money. More power. More control. She saw him as a potential partner. A new source of wealth to be drained.

"Daniel Young," she repeated. "I do not recognize the name. What industry are you in?"

"Technology," Ethan said smoothly. "I have made most of my money in software. Artificial intelligence. Data analytics. The usual Silicon Valley fare."

"Fascinating." Helen gestured to the seat beside her. "Please. Join me. I would love to hear more about your work."

Ethan sat down. His heart was pounding. He was inches away from the woman who had killed his mother. Who had poisoned his daughter. Who had destroyed his entire family. And she had no idea.

"I have been thinking about expanding into the Asian market," Ethan said. "There is so much potential here. So many opportunities."

Helen nodded. "You are right. This city is a goldmine. But you need the right connections. The right partners. Otherwise, you will be chewed up and spit out."

"I am hoping to find those connections tonight," Ethan said. "Everyone here seems so welcoming."

Helen laughed. "Wealthy people are always welcoming to other wealthy people. It is how we survive. We circle the wagons. We protect our own." She leaned closer. "Tell me, Mr. Young. What is your net worth?"

Ethan smiled. The system provided the number. "Approximately two billion. Give or take."

Helen's eyes widened. Two billion. That was real money. That was the kind of money that could change the balance of power. She wanted him. She wanted his wealth. She wanted his connections. She wanted to drain him dry.

"Perhaps we should discuss a partnership," Helen said. "I have some interesting opportunities. Projects that could be very profitable. With your capital and my connections, we could accomplish great things."

"Interesting," Ethan said. "I would love to hear more."

The system pinged. It had planted surveillance software on Helen's phone. The connection was established. Ethan could now monitor all her calls, her messages, her every move. He had an invisible window into her life.

The trap was set. Helen had no idea that she was inviting a wolf into her home. She had no idea that the man she was trying to partner with was the same man she had been hunting for years. She had no idea that her empire was about to crumble.

The orchestra began to play. The auction was starting. Helen turned her attention to the stage. Her hand reached out to touch Ethan's arm. "Stay," she said. "After the auction, we can discuss our partnership over dinner."

Ethan nodded. "I would like that very much."

He leaned back in his chair. He watched Helen bid on a painting. He watched Sophia stare at the floor. He watched Marcus boast about his wealth. All of them were in the same room. All of them were his enemies. And none of them knew what was coming.

The system whispered in his mind. Mission complete. Surveillance established. Next phase ready to begin. The hunt is on, young master.

She had been working nonstop since they arrived. "A few more days. Maybe a week. I need more supplies. The Wu family destroyed most of my equipment. I am working with what I have."Ethan nodded. "I will get you whatever you need. Just tell me."Sarah sighed. "What I need is the original medical records. The ones the Wus have hidden in their vault.
