Chapter 1
The Price of a Meal
Hanzo stared at the sandwich like it was a holy relic, his fingers trembling against the crinkling wax paper. It was a masterpiece of budget engineering: three slices of slightly-past-prime turkey, a single leaf of lettuce that had seen better days, and a smear of mustard that was currently the only thing standing between him and a total psychological breakdown. He’d spent his last four dollars and eighty-two cents on this. It was his last meal, his final stand against the void of an empty stomach.
"Don't do it, Hanzo," he whispered to himself, the sound of his own voice raspy from a day of silence. "Just one bite. Just a nibble. The world won't end if you experience joy for six seconds."
[ALERT: DETACHMENT PROTOCOL INITIATED.]
The voice wasn't in his ears; it was vibrating inside his skull, resonant and annoyingly chipper. A holographic interface shimmered into existence, floating right over the turkey sub. It was a woman with sharp, violet eyes and hair silver enough to make a moon look dull. She was dressed in a suit that probably cost more than the city block they were standing in.
"Oh, look at you," the woman said, leaning against a virtual air-cushion with a look of profound disgust. "Clinging to a pile of processed meat like it’s the Holy Grail. Truly pathetic. I’ve seen rats with more dignity, and they at least have the decency to look ashamed when they’re eating out of the gutter."
Hanzo squinted at the floating figure. "Who the hell are you? And why are you mocking my lunch?"
"I am Jorvanna Creed, your System Administrator and Resident Critic of your Abysmal Life Choices," she replied, buffing her fingernails. "And that isn't lunch. That is a chain. A greasy, mayo-slathered anchor holding you back from your destiny. You want to be rich? You want to be the 'Supreme Scavenger'? Then you have to prove you don't need that garbage."
[QUEST: THE FIRST SACRIFICE]
[OBJECTIVE: Discard your 'Luxury Asset' (The Turkey Sub) into the nearest refuse container.]
[TIME REMAINING: 00:45]
[REWARD: ???]
[FAILURE PENALTY: Permanent Gastric Distress and a 100% chance of remaining a loser forever.]
"Luxury asset?" Hanzo’s voice went up an octave. "It’s a four-dollar sub, Jorvanna! It’s literally the only thing I own that isn't currently covered in holes or regret!"
"Tick-tock, Hanzo," Jorvanna said, checking a non-existent watch on her wrist. "Forty seconds until the system decides you're a lost cause and fries your neural pathways just for the amusement of the gods. Honestly, the mustard is already dripping onto your thumb. It’s a sign. Let it go."
Hanzo looked at the sandwich. Then at the rusted, overflowing dumpster five feet away. Then back at the sandwich. His stomach let out a roar so loud it sounded like a dying whale. The hunger was a physical weight, a clawing beast in his gut. But the 'Failure Penalty'... he’d lived through enough "loser forever" scenarios to know the System wasn't kidding.
"I hate you," Hanzo hissed, his eyes watering. "I hate this system. I hate this alley."
"Less talking, more tossing," Jorvanna prompted, a malicious glint in her eyes. "Thirty seconds. If you eat it now, I promise you it’ll taste like ash and disappointment. Also, the turkey is definitely turning gray around the edges. Do you really want to risk salmonella for a mid-tier deli experience?"
With a cry of genuine, soul-crushing anguish, Hanzo wound up his arm. He treated that sandwich like a game-winning baseball, hurling it toward the dumpster with every ounce of his remaining strength. It soared through the air—a beautiful, tragic arc of wax paper and hope before landing with a wet thud right on top of a discarded diaper.
Hanzo fell to his knees, his hands clawing at the damp asphalt. "It's gone. My beautiful, mediocre sub... gone."
"Bravo," Jorvanna clapped, though it sounded like she was hitting two pieces of dry wood together. "A stunning display of cowardice and desperation. You’re learning. Now, stand up. Your life as a professional scavenger begins now. There’s a soda can three inches to your left. Pick it up."
Hanzo looked down. Nestled in a puddle of questionable liquid was a crushed, neon-green 'Turbo-Dew' can. It was sticky, dented, and looked like it had been run over by a tractor.
"You want me to pick up a can? That's the reward?" Hanzo asked, his voice dead.
"The act is the reward, you simpleton," Jorvanna snapped. "The System rewards the grind. Pick. It. Up."
Gritting his teeth, Hanzo reached out. His fingers brushed the cold, sticky aluminum. The moment his skin made contact, a violent jolt of electricity surged through his arm—not painful, but like a shot of pure adrenaline.
Ding!
[SCAVENGING SKILL UNLOCKED: LEVEL 1]
[ITEM RECOVERED: CRUSHED SODA CAN (RECYCLABLE)]
[VALUE CALCULATED...]
[MARKET MULTIPLIER APPLIED: 1,000,000x]
Hanzo froze. "Market multiplier? What are you—"
Suddenly, his phone, a cracked-screen model that barely held a charge for twenty minutes, vibrated violently in his pocket. It buzzed and groaned like it was about to explode. Shaking, Hanzo pulled it out.
A notification was plastered across the screen, obscuring his wallpaper of a sunset he’d never actually seen in person.
[BANK OF THE VALE: Deposit Received. $1,000,000.00. Current Balance: $1,000,000.03.]
The three cents were from a discarded nickel he’d found in a laundromat dryer three months ago.
Hanzo’s jaw hit the floor. He looked at the sticky can in his hand, then at the phone, then at Jorvanna. "Is... is this a joke? Is this a prank show? Where are the cameras?"
Jorvanna rolled her eyes, her holographic form flickering with a hint of amusement. "Oh, please. As if anyone would pay to watch you mope in an alley. That is your first commission, Hanzo. You discarded the 'illusion' of wealth your pathetic sandwich and embraced the 'reality' of value. To the world, that’s trash. To the Supreme Poverty System, it’s a diamond in the rough. Though, technically, it’s just aluminum."
Hanzo’s heart was hammering against his ribs. A million dollars. He could buy ten thousand sandwiches. He could buy a deli. He could buy a deli and fire the guy who always forgot the extra napkins.
"I'm rich," he whispered. "I'm actually rich."
"Don't get ahead of yourself, Trash King," Jorvanna said, her voice dropping into a more serious, predatory tone. "That money is 'Indigence Capital.' If you try to spend it on a penthouse or a gold-plated bidet right now, the System will consider it a breach of contract and liquidate your internal organs. You are a Scavenger. You must live like one until your 'Poverty Quotient' reaches the required threshold."
Hanzo’s excitement plummeted. "So... I have a million dollars, but I’m still sleeping in this alley?"
"Precisely. Only now, you’re a millionaire sleeping in an alley. It’s very avant-garde," Jorvanna smirked. "And don't look now, but your first admirer has arrived. Try not to drool on your million-dollar shoes. Oh wait, those are sneakers with the soles flapping off. Perfect."
The sound of a high-performance engine purred at the mouth of the alleyway, cutting through the silence of the night. It wasn't the rattling roar of a garbage truck or the screech of a police cruiser. It was the low, rhythmic hum of something expensive.
Hanzo turned his head, still clutching the sticky Turbo-Dew can. A sleek, obsidian-black limousine, its windows tinted so darkly they looked like slabs of onyx, slowly rolled into the cramped space. It looked entirely out of place, like a shark swimming into a bathtub.
The car came to a smooth halt precisely three feet from where Hanzo knelt in the dirt. The headlights cut through the gloom, illuminating the trash, the grime, and Hanzo’s stunned, hungry face. For a long moment, nothing happened. The engine just hummed, a mechanical heart beating in the darkness.
Then, the rear door began to swing open.

Ilyndra Steel didn’t blink. She stood by the obsidian desk, her posture as sharp as her name, holding a tablet that flickered with the real-time stock collapse of ‘Pax-Moon Tech,’ Elara’s primary subsidiary. “The sedative kit is ready, Ma’am,” Ilyndra said, her voice a cool alto. “But if you intend to collect him like a stray cat, I suggest we wait until after the market closes. If we miss this window, Elara’s board of directors will have no choice but to sign the liquidation papers.”Lucianara Wave stood up, her silk dress whispering against the stone floor. “Oh, I can multi-task, Ilyndra. I want that man, and I want Elara’s company. Ideally, I’d like to use his own rags to wipe the tears from her face when I take her CEO chair.”Three miles away, Hanzo was currently occupied with a much more pressing issue: his left sneaker had developed a personality. Specifically, the sole had parti

Grimor Vale didn’t laugh. He didn't even crack a smile. Instead, he swung the jagged neck of the broken beer bottle through the air, the green glass whistling a sharp, threatening note that ended abruptly as he pointed it inches from Hanzo’s nose.“You’ve got jokes, Hanzo. I like jokes. They make the world a little less miserable while I’m taking people's things,” Grimor sneered, his breath smelling of cheap menthols and even cheaper gin. Hanzo stared at the cryptic text, his thumb hovering over the cracked screen of his phone. The threat was ominous, the timing was impeccable, and the sender was anonymous.
