Ethan lowered the bow.

“One down.” He checked his status.

His maximum health had increased, but his current condition was still far from perfect. His shoulder hurt whenever he pulled the bowstring too far, and the long battle had left him breathing harder than he wanted to admit.

Twelve guardians. He had defeated only one.

Ethan glanced at the remaining statues. Their heads had turned toward him.

Several were already moving.

He had no time to rest. The second guardian carried a sword and shield.

The battle had been dangerous, but his talent had continued to grow with every normal attack.A second notification appeared.[Emergency World Event Completed.][Reward: 1 Attribute Point.][Reward: 500 Experience.][Reward: Rare Material, Aberration Core Fragment.][Reward: Skill Upgrade Token.]Ethan accepted the rewards. He allocated the attribute point to Agility. He wanted to improve his movement speed and reaction time. His current HP was dangerously low, so he activated his recovery skill.[Death’s Refusal: Passive Recovery Activated.][Restoration Beginning.]A warm sensation spread through his body. His injuries did not disappear immediately, but the pain began to fade.Clara reached him.“Are you hurt?”“Nothing serious.”She looked at his bloodstained clothes.“You need to stop saying that.”“I’ll consider it.”She shook her head.Lucas approached from the other side.He was holding his injured shoulder.“Darius is over there.”Ethan turned.Darius was standing near a broke

Clara caught his arm. Are you all right?”“I’m fine, You are bleeding.”“It is not serious.” She gave him a disapproving look.“You always say that.”“Because stopping to complain won’t make it heal faster.”Ethan pulled away gently and looked at the creature.Something had changed. The glowing cracks along its body were closing. The wounds were healing. He watched the process carefully. It was not ordinary regeneration. The creature was absorbing energy from the destroyed arena.Every time a section of the barrier collapsed, a faint stream of light entered its body.Ethan understood.“It is feeding on the arena’s energy.”Lucas returned to their position.“Can we stop it?”“We need to destroy whatever is supplying that energy.”Ethan looked toward the central platform.Several large crystals stood beneath the arena’s broken floor.Their surfaces were covered in the same black markings as the creature. One crystal had already cracked. The creature was drawing energy from them.“Lucas,

  • THE ENEMY INSIDE THE ARENA

Ethan immediately stepped back. The machine had been inactive moments earlier. Its broken panels were covered in dust, and several cables hung from the ceiling. Yet the golden light beneath its surface was growing brighter.Ethan raised his Moonfall Bow. “Identify yourself.”There was no immediate response.Instead, a faint blue screen appeared above the machine.[Unknown Connection Established.] [Searching for Available Records.][Warning: External Authority Detected.]Ethan narrowed his eyes.“External authority?” The screen flickered.[Connection Stabilized.] [Welcome, Vessel.]A cold sensation moved through his chest. He had seen that title too many times to dismiss it as an ordinary system notification. Before he could investigate further, a second message appeared.[The First Architect has requested access.][Grant Access?] Two options appeared beneath the message.[Accept.] [Reject.]Ethan did not hesitate. He selected Reject. The screen turned black. For several seconds, nothin

Clara looked at the sky through the broken ceiling.“We should rest first. You were injured during the fight, and Lucas took a heavy hit.”“We do not have time to waste.”“We also do not have time to collapse halfway there.”Ethan looked at her.She held his gaze.“You keep telling everyone to learn how to survive before they try to become stronger. You should follow your own advice.”For a moment, he almost argued. Then he looked at his status window. His health was stable, but his shoulder had begun to hurt again. The Ancient Core had strengthened his talent, yet it had also stirred something inside him that he could not fully understand. He needed to be careful.“Two hours,” he said. “We rest here, then leave.”Lucas nodded.“I will take the first watch.”Clara found a room away from the damaged energy conduits. They secured the entrance and checked the remaining supplies.Ethan sat against the wall with the Moonfall Bow across his knees. He tried to focus on his breathing. The vis

Ethan stood motionless.Clara did not speak.Lucas looked away. The room seemed smaller than before.Ryan had been dead. Ethan had seen it happen. The recording could have been made before his death, after it, or assembled from fragments of several different moments. It could have been genuine. It could have been a deliberate attempt to manipulate him. What it could not prove was that Ryan could be brought back.Ethan closed the file.“I am not going to chase a possibility just because I want it to be true.”Clara looked at him.“Ethan…”“I know what I saw. I know Ryan died. This recording does not change that.”“But if the Shadow Order has been preserving memories, there may be a way to learn what happened to him.”“Then we will find out what they did. We will not assume the result is the same as bringing him back.”Lucas nodded slowly.“That is reasonable.” Ethan returned to the file list.Another recording had been attached to Ryan’s report. Its label read:IDENTITY TRANSFER TEST. • Ryan Carter’s Forbidden Experiment

“I’m still standing,” he replied, though his voice was strained.Ethan fired at the guardian’s knee again. This time, the arrow struck a glowing line beneath the armor. The line flickered making the creature staggered.A message appeared.[Weak Point Detected. Energy Channel Disrupted.]Ethan understood. The guardian was not simply protected by its armor. Its strength came from the energy channels connected to the crystal in its chest. Every time it absorbed energy from the dead monsters, those channels repaired its damage. They needed to stop the energy flow before attacking the core.“Clara, can you find the source feeding the crystal?”She closed her eyes. A blue glow spread from her staff, passing through the courtyard and into the underground chamber.“There are three energy lines connected to it,” she said. “One runs beneath the eastern wall. Another passes through the floor. The third leads to the chamber behind it.”“Can you block them?” Not all at once.”“You only need to in
