I sprinted the last two blocks.

My lungs were on fire, my shoulder throbbed from where I'd slammed into that shelving rack an hour ago, but none of it mattered. Not while the coordinates were still pulsing steadily in the corner of my vision, pulling me toward Kyle's building like a hook buried in my chest.

[Distance to anomaly: 50 meters.]

I slowed down as I hit his street, ducking into the shadow of a parked delivery van. I tried to force air back into my lungs, trying not to do something stupid like run out into the open and get spotted. Kyle's building sat quiet ahead of me. Most of the windows were dark, save for a few flickering with the dim, blue-gray light of a TV left on late.

His window was dark, too. Third floor, the corner unit. No lights, no movement.

[Distance to anomaly: 20 meters.]

The number felt wrong. Twenty meters meant the source was behind the building, not inside it. I edged along the fence line, staying low and keeping my phone light off, letting my eyes adjust to the shadows.

The alley behind the building was a narrow gap between two chain-link fences, partially choked by dumpsters that looked like they hadn't been emptied in weeks. I pressed myself against the corner of the nearest one and peered around it, half-expecting to find whatever had triggered the warning.

[Distance to anomaly: 0 meters.]

[Anomaly no longer detected. Signal lost.]

The words faded before I could process them. Whatever it had been, it was gone either it had fled, it was dead, or it was something the system couldn't quite pin down.

I knew I should have turned around right then. I should have gone home and convinced myself it was just a glitch or a false reading, something I could look into later from the safety of my own apartment.

Instead, I heard voices.

They were low and careful. The kind of quiet people use when they don't want to be overheard, which is exactly the kind of quiet that makes you want to listen.

I eased forward along the fence until I could see past the dumpster, and suddenly, my whole body went rigid.

Kyle was standing near his building's back door, arms crossed, his shoulders tight in a way I'd never seen before. And standing across from him, close enough to keep their voices low, was Lilly.

Lilly. The woman who had told me not to stay out too late an hour ago. Lilly, who was supposed to be at home. Lilly, standing in a dark alley with my best friend in the middle of the night, neither of them looking even remotely surprised to see the other.

I pressed myself flatter against the fence, my heart slamming so hard against my ribs that I was sure the sound alone would give me away.

"can't keep doing this," Kyle said, his voice strained. He pushed a hand through his hair. "Not like this. Not behind his back."

"I know." Lilly's voice cracked. For a disorienting second, she sounded exactly like the woman who had kissed my cheek that morning warm, soft, and completely unlike someone standing in a dark alley keeping secrets. "I know, Kyle. I just I don't know what else to do."

"You could tell him."

"And say what?" She let out a short, hollow laugh. "That I've been " She cut herself off, glancing instinctively over her shoulder. I ducked lower, my pulse roaring in my ears, terrified for a split second that she’d spotted me.

She hadn't. She turned back to Kyle, wrapping her arms around herself, and they both fell into a heavy silence.

I didn't move. I barely breathed, crouching in the dark just thirty feet away from the two people I had built my entire second life around protecting. I didn't approach. I didn't call out. I didn't do any of the things the old me the first-life me would have done without thinking twice.

I just watched.

[Truth Sight: Active.]

The system's words surfaced unbidden, cold and quiet, overlaying them like a second skin that only I could see.

[Secondary Emotion: Fear — Target: Jayden Cole]

[Subject: Kyle Marsh]

[Hidden Intent Detected: HIGH]

[Primary Emotion: Resentment]

[Secondary Emotion: Guilt — Target Unclear]

I read the data two, three times, my stomach twisting tighter with every pass. Guilt. Fear, specifically aimed at me. Resentment, aimed at... something. The system wouldn't say, and I was starting to realize it never gave me more than enough information to make the mystery hurt.

Below me, Kyle muttered something too low to catch, and Lilly's shoulders slumped, the fight seemingly draining out of her.

"Dinner's still on for tonight," she said finally, her voice steadier as she pulled herself back together. "Act normal. We'll figure the rest out after."

Kyle didn't respond immediately. When he finally did, his voice was flat and careful, a tone that made the hair on my arms stand up.

"Yeah," he said. "Normal."

He turned and walked back through the rear door without another word. Lilly stood alone in the alley for a moment, hugging herself, looking like she might actually break down.

Then, she wiped her face, squared her shoulders, and walked toward the street toward our apartment.

I stayed crouched behind that dumpster for a long time after they were both gone, staring into the dark, my mind looping through every second of what I'd just witnessed.

I didn't know what they were hiding yet. But I knew the shape of it the same shape I remembered from a life I had already died once to protect.

Something was happening between them. Something that had started long before the system, the anomalies, or any of this.

And I had no clue, just standing there in the shadows with my heart slowly breaking all over again, if what I’d just witnessed meant they were already plotting my next betrayal or if it meant something even more devastating.

  • CHAPTER 12: CONVENIENT

"You're doing it again."I looked up from my plate. Kyle was watching me over the top of his burger, looking amused, like I was some kind of novelty he'd just caught performing a trick."Doing what?""That thing where you disappear into your own head." He gestured vaguely toward my face with a fry. "Zoning out. You've been doing it for days now.""Sorry." I forced out a small, easy laugh, the kind that sounds apologetic but doesn't mean a thing. "It's just been a long week.""Every week is a long week for you," he said. He wasn't being mean, exactly, but he wasn't being kind either. It was more like he was noting a defect in a piece of property he owned. "You need a hobby, man. Something that isn't just work and constantly worrying about the rest of us." The rest of us. As if I were part of his staff. As if my entire role in his life had been whittled down to a chore he checked on occasionally, like making sure a smoke detector still had fresh batteries."Maybe," I said.He grinned, l

  • CHAPTER 11: BUSINESS AS USUAL

Lilly was still up when I walked through the door. She was hunched over the kitchen table, thumbing through her phone, not even bothering to look up as I entered."Where'd you go?" she asked. Her voice was flat, the kind of question asked out of habit rather than actual interest."Just driving." I set my keys on the counter. "Needed some air after last night.""Mm." She didn't stop scrolling. "Kyle’s losing his mind. He says he’s never seen anything like that thing before.""Are you okay?" I asked. She finally lifted her gaze, but there wasn't a trace of guilt in her eyes. Instead, she looked mildly irritated, as if my question was a nuisance interrupting something far more important."I'm fine, Jayden. It's over." She turned her attention back to her screen. "You don't need to hover."I stood there for a moment, just watching her, letting Truth Sight do what it always did without me even having to trigger it.[Truth Sight: Active.][Subject: Lilly Grant][Primary Emotion: Annoyance]

  •  CHAPTER 10: THE FIRST MOVE

I didn't sleep a wink that night.By the time the sun began to creep over the horizon, Kyle was already gone. He’d retreated to his own apartment, muttering something about needing space to process everything. Lilly stayed curled up on her side of the bed, her back turned to me. She was pretending to be asleep, just as I was pretending not to notice.Lying there in the dark, I finally let my mind do the one thing it hadn't allowed itself to do since I woke up in this second life.Plan.I wouldn't just react anymore. I wouldn't spend my life just surviving one anomaly or one warning notification at a time. I was going to plan.[Status check.]I pulled up the screen that only I could see. I stared at the numbers that had seemed meaningless a week ago, but now felt like the only solid ground left beneath my feet.[Level: 6[Skills: Truth Sight, Restraint, Threat Sense][Gold reserves: $214,000][Properties: 1 (undisclosed)]The money wasn't system currency. • CHAPTER 9: LEVERAGE

Kyle woke up crying. It wasn't loud. It was just these quiet, fractured sounds. He was curled up on what was left of our kitchen floor, Lilly’s hand wrapped tightly around his, his whole body shivering as if the cold had settled deep into his bones and refused to leave.I stood over them, blood still crusting on my forearm, feeling absolutely nothing that resembled relief."Jay." His voice was wrecked, barely a whisper. "Jay, I saw…I saw things. In my head. It felt like it was going to wear me like a suit.""You're okay now," I said. Even to my own ears, my voice sounded flat.Lilly looked up at me, her eyes bloodshot, silently begging me to be gentler. But I didn't have any gentleness left in me tonight. I’d spent it all on a version of Kyle that didn't exist anymore: the guy from three years of takeout, bad movies, and making rent. Not the man who had stood in a dark alley an hour ago telling Lilly they couldn't keep doing this.I helped him up anyway. I sat him at the remains of th

  • CHAPTER 8: THE COST OF WAITING

"Lilly, don't!"She didn't listen. She took three more steps, bringing her within reach of that thing, while I was still slumped against the wall, my lungs burning and refusing to draw a decent breath.[Restraint: MAXIMUM THRESHOLD REACHED.][Reward multiplier: x4]The math didn't make sense, but I didn't care. Something deep inside me just snapped all the terror I'd been suppressing since that hallway, since that locked door, since this unasked-for system started tearing my life apart. Instead of crushing me, that feeling turned into fuel.I moved.I slammed into the thing wearing Kyle’s skin with everything I had, driving it away from Lilly and straight through the kitchen table. Wood splintered and exploded around us. We hit the floor hard, but this time, when I lunged for its throat, my grip didn't falter."You don't get her," I said. My voice sounded low and cold, like someone I didn't even recognize. "You don't get either of them."The red light burned against my palm, hot enoug

  • CHAPTER 7: WHAT'S LEFT OF HIM

It happened so fast.Too fast for Kyle. Too fast for the guy who used to lounge on my couch eating pizza and nodding off halfway through movies. I threw myself sideways over the kitchen counter, plates shattering beneath me, as I felt the rush of air from its claws, now where his fingers used to be, raking just an inch from my spine.[Threat Sense: Active.][Hostile approaching. Angle: rear-left.]I rolled off the counter just as it slammed into the cabinets behind me. Wood splintered everywhere, and red light spilled across the kitchen floor like blood."Kyle!" I yelled. I don't even know why I said it. Some stupid, stubborn part of me was still holding out hope that there was enough of him left to hear me. "Kyle, fight it!"The thing turned those glowing eyes toward me and laughed with his voice low, distorted, and completely wrong. "He's still in here," it said. "Screaming, actually. Want to hear?"Its jaw unhinged wider than any human mouth should, and the sound that followed wasn
