Chapter 25
Night had fully taken over, swallowing the forest in a mouth of black ink. All the men rested in their tents, snoring, dreaming, escaping the reality of what awaited them at dawn. All except one. She moved like smoke through the trees, a black cape wrapped tight around her body, the hood pulled low to hide her face. She jumped from branch to branch without sound, without weight, a shadow given form. Her eyes scanned the darkness below, searching, cataloging, memorizing. She came to a halt atop the tallest oak, crouching low, her breath misting in the cold air. Below her, wolves prowled. No ordinary wolves. These were Shadowmaw Beasts, the deadliest predators in the forest. Their fur was black as void, rippling with red patterns that pulsed like living veins, as if fire flowed beneath their skin. Their eyes glowed amber in the dark, ancient and hungry, and when they moved, the shadows themselves seemed to bend around them. "Considering they're at the edge of the forest, it's best to assume they're the final stage," she whispered, her voice barely stirring the leaves. "Only Tier 8 can handle them. And lucky us, we have one." She watched them stalk in circles, their paws silent against the moss, their jaws dripping with saliva that hissed when it touched stone. "Well, my scout is complete. Best I head back to the others." Just as she turned to leave, something caught her eye. Lights. Distant, flickering, moving through the trees miles away. Not firelight. Something colder. Something organized. "Those lights... Could it be..." Her heart quickened. Without a second thought, she leaped into the darkness, tree to tree, faster than before, urgency burning in her chest. --- Inside Nolan's tent, he sat cross-legged on the ground, his eyes closed, his breathing slow and deep. The air around him hummed with barely contained mana, purple and gold swirling in invisible currents. The tent flap rustled. Footsteps echoed inside. Light, careful, trained. "I believe you've done what I've asked for..." Nolan spoke without opening his eyes. "Yes, I have." The figure removed her cape, revealing Isabella's face, flushed from running, her hair matted with sweat and leaves. "What have you found?" Nolan stood, walking to a small table where a jug of water waited. He poured himself a glass, drank slowly, then turned to face her. "Everything is just as you mentioned." Isabella's smile was brief. "With the army we've got now, it would take at least four days to reach the end of the forest. But with casualties around forty-five percent, add three more days." "It's just as you said. A week to complete the raid. But..." Her face shifted, the smile fading into something darker. Concern. "Go on..." Nolan raised a brow. "Lights. From far north, heading this direction. Well, toward the cave, to be more precise." "Hmm... Is that so." Nolan hummed, taking another sip of water, his expression unreadable. "It looks as though they've made their move as well." He turned away from her, staring at the tent wall as if he could see through it, through the forest, through time itself. "Looks like we're getting closer to the beginning of the novel." A small smile touched his lips. "Well, time to change the narrative." He set down the glass, the sound sharp in the quiet tent. "Do not bother yourself with where they're going. You did well. You should go rest now." He dismissed the whole situation without explanation, without context, without trust. Isabella opened her mouth, wanting to ask, wanting to understand. But she saw the set of his shoulders, the wall he had built around himself. She simply bowed and walked away, her cape trailing behind her like a question mark. Nolan stared at the tent flap long after she left, letting out a small breath he didn't know he'd been holding. "Hard to tell why I even want to save him, or even change the situation. But it's for the best, I guess." He lay down on his thin bedroll, staring at the canvas ceiling, and let exhaustion pull him under. --- Morning came with the scream of birds and the clash of armor. Nolan walked out of his tent and froze. The army stood before him, all two hundred, armor buckled on, swords drawn and gleaming in the pale dawn. They looked like men who had accepted their deaths and decided to meet them standing. "It looks as though my boys are ready for death... Hehe. Well, that's more like it. Let's move." He took a step forward, then stopped. A hand gripped his shoulder, tight and unyielding. "Huh?" He turned his head to find his trusted allies standing behind him, shoulder to shoulder, wearing expressions that made his stomach drop. "Where do you think you're going, wearing that noble clothing?" Ralph asked, his grin wide and mischievous, the look of a man about to do something terrible. Nolan's eyes darted to Isabella and Hilda. Both wore matching smiles, sweet and dangerous. Sweat beaded on his forehead. He forced out a smile, weak and wavering. "This... isn't going to end well." --- A few minutes later, Nolan walked out of his tent wearing light armor, dark as midnight, fitted close to his body like a second skin. It was assassin's gear, flexible leather reinforced with thin plates of enchanted steel at the chest, shoulders, and knees. The material drank the light, making him seem to blur at the edges, a ghost in human form. Straps crossed his torso, holding daggers and small vials. The hood hung loose at his neck, ready to be pulled up. His eyes held the look of a person who had seen trauma inside that tent. The look of a noble boy who had been wrestled into practical clothes by people who cared more about his survival than his dignity. "Who knew simple stuff could bring such disaster," he muttered, his eyes full of tiredness. "Alright, this is where we break formation. Issabella and her group, you take the south section. Hilda, you take the north. Ralph, the east is yours. I'll take the west. Now move!" The teams split into groups of fifty, each led by a single commander. With that, the raid began. --- "Come on! Four men to one beast!" Ralph roared, his sword flashing through the air. His team battled a troop of monkeys. Or what looked like monkeys. Their fur was matted and gray, their bodies twisted with muscle, but their eyes, their eyes were pits of black, swirling with a dark radiant aura that seemed to suck the light from the world. These were Void Howlers, known for their impossible speed and crushing strength. They moved in packs, coordinated, intelligent, their screeches echoing through the trees like breaking glass. Ralph moved like water, his sword precise and deadly. Each strike found its mark, each parry turned an attack into an opening. He killed with one blow, then spun to help a knight who had fallen, his shield rising just in time to block claws that would have torn the boy's throat out. The battle raged for more than thirty minutes, a chaos of steel and fur and screams. Then silence. The Void Howlers lay dead, their black blood pooling in the dirt. Ralph's men collapsed where they stood, gasping, their armor dented, their faces pale. "Hard to believe this is just the start of the west section," one knight said between heavy breaths, his voice hollow. Ralph stood tall, his sword stabbed into the earth, his hand gripping the hilt. His cape billowed in the small wind that cut through the trees. He stared ahead at the path continuing deeper into the forest, darker and more dangerous. His jaw tightened. This was only the beginning.Latest Chapter
The Hand of a God
Chapter 31. "What was that...?" One of Isabella's knights stared at the dimming light on the horizon, his sword hanging limp at his side, his face pale with awe. The golden radiance had faded to a faint glow, then to nothing, leaving behind only the memory of something impossible. Isabella smiled. It was small, tired, but real. She looked down from her perch in the tree and released a heavy breath, her shoulders dropping, the tension of the day finally leaving her muscles. "We rest here for the night." She jumped from the branch, landing silently on the moss below. "You all better get some rest." --- On the far end of the forest, Nolan collapsed. His body hit the ground like a puppet with its strings cut, his remaining arm flung out, his eyes rolling back. The purple flames had died. The wind had stilled. All that remained was a boy, broken and bleeding, who had given everything he had. "Master!" Xavier ran to him, sliding to his knees, his hands shaking as he checked f
Absolute Light
"Arrrggghhhhh!!!"Xavier's scream tore through the void, raw and broken, as electric shocks crawled over his body like living snakes. He fell to one knee, his head hanging low, his whole body convulsing. Around him, dozens of golden strings lay dead and dull on the black floor, their light extinguished, their magic spent."Another wrong string chosen..." The voice echoed through the darkness, dripping with mockery, with amusement, with the cruel patience of something that had watched mortals fail for centuries. "This sure is entertaining. Which one will you choose next? Another wrong string, or..."Without another thought, Xavier reached out and pulled another. It turned gray in his hand, the light dying before it could even flicker. His eyes widened, horror flooding his chest."Wrong yet again."Electricity surged through Xavier's body, ten times stronger than before. He screamed, his voice cracking, his eyes rolling back until only the whites showed. He collapsed to the ground, twit
The Burn and the Choice
'Chapter 29 The knight kept running, Nolan slung over his shoulder like a sack of grain. Blood soaked through the knight's armor, warm and sticky, painting his back in dark ribbons. Nolan's face was hidden in shadow, his eyes invisible, his body limp and silent. He had not spoken a word since they left the clearing, had not moved, had not breathed in any way that suggested consciousness. The knight ran on, branches whipping his face, roots threatening to trip him with every step. His lungs burned. His legs ached. But he did not stop. Could not stop. "Hey, you..." The voice came from behind him, low and dark and completely wrong. It did not sound like a wounded boy. It sounded like something that had crawled out of a grave and decided to keep walking. The knight paused mid-step, his eyes widening, his whole body freezing in place. "Ma... Master?" "Don't you think you've done enough running around for the day?" Nolan asked, his expression still hidden, his voice carrying an e
The Price of Survival
Chapter 28 The defense dragged on for over twenty minutes, each second stretching into eternity. Nolan stood alone in the offense, his magic tearing through the darkness, fire and wind and earth exploding from his palms in desperate bursts. Blood sprayed across the forest floor, black and red, painting the leaves in streaks of death. The lizards learned. They adapted. Their attention switched to him alone, abandoning the shielded knights to focus on the mage who burned their kin. They attacked in groups, coordinated, silent, shadows given fangs and claws. His men stepped in, defending him as much as they could, their swords flashing, their shields rising, their bodies becoming walls between their lord and the monsters."Give me your sword."Nolan didn't wait for permission. He snatched the blade from a knight's hand and stormed into the fray, his movements wild, reckless, driven by adrenaline and fear. He slaughtered lizard after lizard, steel meeting scales, magic meeting flesh. But
The Chosen One
'Chapter 27 -"Young Master Nolan!!! Are you injured?!"One of the knights rushed over, his boots crunching through leaves, his face pale with worry. He reached out a hand, then stopped, his whole body freezing in place.Nolan slowly turned. His expression was dark and serious, his purple eyes glowing brighter than ever before, two burning embers in the shadow of the forest. He stared at the knight for a long moment, silent, assessing, seeing something the others couldn't.The knight took one step back. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. A silver piercing on his right ear catching the dim light. Young. Maybe seventeen. Scared but trying to hide it."I'm alright. Tell me... what's your name?" Nolan asked, his voice calm, cool, controlled."My name is Xavier, my lord." The knight gave a slight bow, his hand trembling at his side.Nolan's heart skipped a beat. His blood turned cold."It truly is him..." he thought, his mind reeling. "Why is he appearing so early in the book? And in this family's ho
The Shadow Looms
Chapter 26Hours passed at the far north, where Hilda and her army pushed deeper into the forest. They had cleared six stages of different beasts, each one more vicious than the last. Blood painted their armor in streaks of green, black, and crimson. Their swords dulled. Their shields cracked. But they kept moving."We stop here for now."Hilda stood at the edge of a small clearing, her eyes scanning the darkness between the trees. The forest ahead seemed to breathe, its branches swaying without wind, its roots trembling with something buried deep beneath the earth. Her men dropped to the ground, gasping, their bodies hitting the dirt with exhausted thuds."Thank the heavens above... I thought we were still going." One knight sprawled on his back, staring at the canopy, his chest heaving. Others relaxed against tree trunks, their armor clinking softly, their faces pale beneath the grime."Eat up and drink water. Tend the wounded. We head out in an hour's time." Hilda's voice was flat,
