65. The witch and the devil.
Dae opened his eyes.He was in the fortune teller's tent, the purple orb glowing faintly in his hands. Opposite him sat Lucian, slumped over and completely still, his skin turning pale as the poison worked its way through his body. The connection between them was severed now, and Dae let the orb rest back on its cushion. The witch stood in the corner, polishing her nails with slow, lazy strokes. She blew on her fingertips and turned her gaze to him with a smile that was equal parts warmth and mischief."You're back," she said.Dae stood up from the floor, brushing off his coat. "You must not let anyone else into your tent. No one. Understood?""As you wish, Master," she said, her tone light and teasing. "But what if he figures it out and wakes up before the poison finishes him?""He'll be dead by then," Dae said. "You have nothing to worry about."He picked up his dark cloak from where it hung on a wooden stand and swung it over his shoulders, already moving toward the curtain that l
64. The witch's globe
Lucian saw the figure properly now. It was Dae, walking toward him across the field of colorful grass with a terrifying aura that made the air feel wrong. The grass moved as he passed, swaying without any wind, bending away from him like it didn't want to be touched.Lucian stretched his hand out to summon his First Sword, but nothing came. His palm stayed empty."Wha—" he said, staring at his hand.Dae laughed, the sound echoing strangely in the open field. "It won't work in here. This is not the real world.""How did you get in here?" Lucian asked, his voice flat.Dae stopped walking and grinned. "I was here first. You came running to me."Lucian's jaw tightened. That aura he had felt at the festival, the pull toward the fortune teller's tent, the strange familiarity of it—it all made sense now. He remembered the fortune teller's purple eyes, the way she had said "Don't resist," and the moment he had ignored his instincts and placed his hand on the orb. "I knew that aura was fami
63. The Fortune Teller Tent
The festival music got louder, and the villagers grew livelier as the night went on. Bottles clanked from the hands of already drunk men, while ladies chattered and danced in the streets, their laughter mixing with the noise of the crowd. Lucian and Isabel took Lily to various stalls where they played different games for prizes. Lily's eyes lit up at every new booth, her small hands tugging at Lucian's sleeve whenever something caught her attention. They stopped at a stall where you had to shoot at objects to knock them over. The game looked simple enough. Light red balls fired from a gun-like contraption at empty drink bottles lined up on a shelf. Lily tried first, her tongue poking out in concentration as she aimed and fired. The ball hit the bottles dead on, but nothing fell. She tried again, and again, each shot more frustrated than the last. Isabel stepped in to help, taking the gun and aiming carefully. Her shot was perfect. The bottles didn't budge. She frowned and
62. Night of the Festival
The evening finally came. The town was lit up in beautiful lights.Strings of paper lanterns hung across every street, glowing in soft reds and golds. The stone paths were crowded with people moving from stall to stall. Music drifted through the air from somewhere near the square. The whole town felt alive.Lucian was dressed in a blue suit with touches of gold. His hair was wet and slicked back.He didn't need his blindfold now that the sky had gone dark, so he watched the crowd with his silver eyes, taking in the full view of the festival. The men had already started drinking, clustering around the tavern stalls with mugs of rum.The ladies were dressed in their finest dresses, walking arm in arm. The kids played as usual, chasing each other between the legs of adults. There were games set up at wooden booths. There was music. There was laughter. He could see it all. Most of all, he could feel it.Step. Step. The footsteps came from behind him."Master. I'm ready."Lucian turned aro
61. The Chief Of Trench Town
They moved to the town square. The place was being set up for the festival.Workers were carrying long wooden tables across the cobblestones. Others were hanging red and gold banners from the rooftops. A group of women were arranging flowers around the base of an old stone fountain in the center of the square. Children ran between the workers, chasing each other and getting in the way and mostly the whole place smelled of fresh bread from a nearby bakery and the faint dust of construction.Garrett walked toward a small group of people standing near the fountain. One of them was directing the others, pointing at different spots around the square and giving orders. He was average in height, with grey hair and a worn cap pulled low over his forehead. His clothes were simple but clean. He looked more like a retired soldier than a town chief.Lucian figured that was him. When they got closer, the two other men with the chief nodded and walked away, leaving him alone."Garrett," the ch
60. Festival Preparations
The next day at the inn, Lucian woke early. The sun was barely up, but the streets outside were already buzzing with noise. For a moment, he just lay there on the mattress, staring up at the wooden ceiling. After weeks of sleeping on cold dirt and jagged rocks in the Dead Valley, the simple comfort of a real bed felt strange. His body was fully healed, but his mind was still adjusting to the lack of danger. He got up and dressed in simple clothes. A plain dark coat, worn boots, and dark shades instead of his usual blindfold. The shades covered his eyes perfectly, hiding the silver glow of his False Sight while making him look like any other traveling merchant passing through town. Isabel dressed down as well, wearing a simple long skirt and a grey tunic. She looked like any other village girl running errands. They stepped out of the inn together. The streets of Trench Town had transformed overnight. The cold morning air smelled heavily of sweet baked dough and roasted meats. Colo
