No one celebrated.

Although the footprints had stopped appearing…

Although the black doorway had remained closed…

Not a single person inside Mission Control believed the danger had passed.

If anything…

The silence felt heavier.

It was the silence of two strangers looking at one another across a great distance.

Waiting.

Wondering who would speak next.

Dr. Elena Brooks stood beside the communications console, replaying Ethan’s transmission.

“My name is Ethan.”

“You asked if you could speak.”

“You can.”

She listened to it three more times before finally muting the speakers.

“I’ve worked in aerospace for seventeen years.”

She slowly shook her head.

“I spent my entire career preparing for first contact.”

She smiled weakly.

“I never imagined it would begin with… permission.”

Professor Orion nodded.

“Neither did I.”

Hours passed.

The black doorway did not move.

The Moon remained quiet.

Scientists continued monitoring every satellite, every telescope, and every sensor aimed toward the far side.

Nothing changed.

Then…

Exactly twelve hours after Ethan’s message…

A technician suddenly jumped from his chair.

“We’re receiving another signal!”

Every conversation stopped.

Unlike the previous transmission…

This one wasn’t interfering with electronics.

It was…

Organized.

Structured.

Almost as though someone had learned how human communication worked overnight.

Dr. Brooks hurried to her console.

“Display it.”

The central screen illuminated.

Instead of words…

A map appeared.

It was a detailed map of the Moon.

One location pulsed with silver light.

The giant black doorway.

Another point appeared several kilometers away.

A small circle.

Then…

A line slowly connected the two.

Sophia studied it.

“They’re showing us a path.”

Professor Orion frowned.

“A safe route.”

The image changed again.

This time…

A single figure appeared beside the path.

Not detailed.

Only a simple outline.

A human silhouette.

The figure slowly walked toward the doorway.

Halfway there…

It stopped.

Then turned around.

Returning safely to where it had started.

The image repeated three times.

Then vanished.

One sentence appeared beneath it.

One may come.

Silence filled the room.

Kai was the first to speak.

“They’re inviting someone.”

Lyra looked at Ethan.

“They’re inviting you.”

The First Architect stepped forward immediately.

“No.”

Everyone turned toward him.

“It is too dangerous.”

“They control the location.”

“They control the meeting.”

“They control every advantage.”

Aion folded his arms.

“And if we refuse?”

The First Architect remained silent.

Ethan quietly stared at the empty screen.

One may come.

Not…

Everyone.

Not…

Bring an army.

Just…

One.

Sophia moved beside him.

“I already know what you’re thinking.”

Ethan smiled faintly.

“You probably do.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Then let me say this before you answer.”

“You don’t have to carry everything alone anymore.”

Those words lingered in the room.

Long after she finished speaking.

Later that evening…

Mission Control gradually emptied.

Scientists returned to their stations.

Military officers began preparing contingency plans.

Outside…

The launch complex glowed beneath the setting sun.

Ethan stood alone on an observation platform overlooking the ocean.

The waves crashed rhythmically against the cliffs below.

Footsteps approached.

It wasn’t Sophia.

It wasn’t Kai.

It was Aion.

The former Devourer stood beside him without speaking.

For several minutes…

Neither of them said anything.

Finally…

Aion broke the silence.

“I was wrong.”

Ethan looked at him.

“About what?”

“Everything.”

He watched the horizon.

“When I believed I was alone…”

“I destroyed worlds.”

“When these forgotten people believed they were alone…”

“They knocked.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

“That surprised me too.”

Aion’s expression softened.

“Do you know why I lost?”

Ethan smiled.

“Because we stopped you.”

“No.”

Aion shook his head.

“I lost…”

“The moment someone offered me understanding instead of another battle.”

The words stayed with Ethan.

That night…

Sleep refused to come.

He sat beside the window of his room, looking toward the Moon hanging high above the lake.

The black doorway couldn’t be seen from Earth.

Yet…

He couldn’t stop thinking about it.

A soft knock sounded behind him.

Sophia stepped inside carrying two cups of tea.

“I figured you weren’t asleep.”

He accepted one gratefully.

They sat together in silence.

Watching the night sky.

After a while…

Sophia finally asked,

“Are you going?”

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

Instead…

He asked a question of his own.

“If our positions were reversed…”

“What would you do?”

Sophia smiled.

“I’d go.”

He laughed quietly.

“I knew you’d say that.”

She leaned her head against his shoulder.

“But…”

“I’d be terrified every step of the way.”

The room fell quiet again.

Comfortably quiet.

The kind of silence only two people who truly understood one another could share.

Then…

The blue mark over Ethan’s heart glowed.

Once.

Softly.

Not with urgency.

With recognition.

At the exact same moment…

Thousands of kilometers away…

The giant black doorway responded.

Its silver seam appeared once more.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then disappeared.

As if something on the other side had felt Ethan’s answer…

Before he had even spoken it.

Far beyond creation…

The impossible-colored tree swayed without wind.

Nova looked upward.

“Another lantern.”

The white-haired child counted carefully.

“There are two now.”

Elias smiled.

“The first represented hope.”

“What does the second represent?”

The old librarian looked toward the distant stars.

“Trust.”

He closed the Human Chronicle resting in his hands.

“Every great journey begins with courage.”

“But…”

He smiled to himself.

“The ones remembered forever…”

“Begin with trust.”

Far away, beneath the endless light of the Moon…

A single shuttle stood ready on its launch pad.

Fueled.

Prepared.

Waiting.

Not for orders.

But for one person’s decision.
