He hesitated.

“Lucas Cole.”
Everything stopped.

Sophia stared at him.
Her breathing became uneven.
Ethan’s mind raced.
“Cole?”
Lucas nodded.
“Yes.”

“Our surname.”
Lucas smiled sadly.
“I know.”
No one dared finish the thought.

Silence consumed the world.
Kai dropped the flashlight.
It rolled into the lake with a splash.
Nobody noticed.
Sophia took one shaky step forward.
“That’s impossible.”
Lucas nodded.

He looked toward the stars.
“The future isn’t following the old rules anymore.”
Ethan finally found his voice.
“If you’re really our son…”
“Why are you here?”
Lucas’s smile faded.
He reached into his coat.

He removed the exact same silver paper as the mysterious letter.
Except this one wasn’t folded.
