"Ninety seconds?" Ariana repeated, her voice cracking as she gripped the edge of the workbench. "Bastian, what does that mean? A runner? A pack?"
"The System says it's artificial," Bastian said, his eyes scanning the garage. "Do you have a weapon in this bag?"
"Front pocket," Ariana said, pointing a shaky finger. "My steel-limb crossbow. The bolts are loaded. Grab it!"
Bastian unzipped the leather pouch and pulled out the compact, heavy-duty weapon. "Got it. How do I get to the roof?"
"The maintenance ladder is behind the main engine bay," Ariana said, coughing slightly. "Through that grey door. Hurry!"
"Stay here, keep your head down," Bastian ordered, rushing toward the door.
"Like I have a choice with this leg!" she called after him. "Just don't get yourself killed!"
"I'll try!" Bastian yelled back.
He burst through the door, finding the rusty iron ladder. His upgraded muscles made the climb effortless, his hands flying up the rungs. He threw open the heavy roof hatch and scrambled onto the gravel-strewn surface of the fire station's roof.
The cool night wind hit his face, carrying the faint, metallic tang of the city's decay.
"System, update me," Bastian muttered. "Where is it?"
"Target approaching from the northeast," the System's voice echoed in his mind. "Distance: eighty meters. Altitude: twelve meters. Speed: twelve meters per second. Classification: Search and Rescue Quadcopter, Model Sentinel-X."
"A search drone?" Bastian squinted into the dark, his upgraded vision cutting through the shadows. "Why is a rescue drone moving like a weapon?"
"The unit's primary programming has corrupted," the System explained. "Its threat assessment matrix is compromised. It is locked in an aggressive search-and-destroy loop."
"Great, a killer robot," Bastian muttered, raising the crossbow. "Just what I needed to round out my evening."
A loud, erratic whirring sound echoed over the rooftops. A shape materialized from the gloom, hovering unsteadily. It was a bulky, metallic quadcopter, about the size of a trash can. Its optical lens glowed a violent, pulsing red, casting eerie shadows across the gravel.
"Target locked," a synthetic, distorted voice crackled from the drone's speaker. "Halt. Identify yourself."
"I don't think it wants to talk," Bastian said, aligning the iron sights of the crossbow.
"Warning," the System chimed. "The drone is preparing to discharge a high-voltage suppression taser. Estimated lock-on in five seconds."
"Not on my watch," Bastian muttered.
"Aim for the secondary battery housing on the lower chassis," the System advised, highlighting a small, glowing blue rectangle on the drone's underbelly. "A direct impact will trigger an emergency shutdown without destroying the power core."
"Don't move," Bastian whispered, taking a slow breath.
The drone's red eye flared brighter. Bzzzt!
"Now!" Bastian squeezed the trigger.
Thwack!
The heavy steel bolt flew true, punching straight through the plastic casing of the lower chassis. Sparks erupted from the wound, and the drone's rotors instantly sputtered.
"Warning! Critical system failure!" the drone's speaker screeched, its red eye flickering rapidly. "Initiating emergency land—"
The whirring died completely. The heavy quadcopter dropped like a stone, crashing onto the gravel roof with a loud, metallic clatter.
Bastian let out a long, slow breath. "Is it dead?"
"Unit neutralized," the System confirmed. "The power core remains fully intact. You may harvest the component."
Bastian walked over to the smoking wreckage, carefully prying the bolt out of the shattered chassis. He popped open the main access panel, revealing a glowing, cylindrical blue battery cell.
"Got it," he muttered, pulling the warm cylinder free. "This thing is still buzzing."
"Bastian!" Ariana's voice drifted up through the open hatch, sounding incredibly panicked. "Bastian! Are you okay? I heard a crash!"
"I'm fine!" Bastian yelled down, holding the core. "I'm coming down! I got it!"
He scrambled back down the ladder, the warm metal cylinder gripped tightly in his hand. When he kicked open the door to the garage, Ariana was sitting on the edge of the workbench, clutching a heavy wrench like a club.
"What was it?" she gasped, her eyes darting to the glowing blue cylinder in his hand. "Oh, my god. Is that a military-grade lithium-ion core?"
"The System called it a Sentinel-X drone," Bastian said, setting the cylinder on the table next to her. "It was completely out of its mind. Tried to shoot me with a taser."
"A Sentinel-X?" Ariana's jaw dropped. "Those things have been dead since the first year of the collapse! How was it even flying?"
"I don't know, but its battery was still working," Bastian said, wiping some soot off his face. "Can we use this?"
"Use it? Bastian, this is a goldmine!" Ariana grabbed the cylinder, her fingers tracing the glowing lines with absolute reverence. "This core has enough energy to power our entire security system for months. We just need to wire it into the main distribution board."
"Where is the board?" Bastian asked, leaning over her shoulder to look at the cylinder.
"Under the main console," Ariana said, her voice dropping to a softer, quieter tone. She looked up, her face just inches from his. "Hey. You're bleeding."
Bastian touched his temple, his fingers coming away with a smear of dark red. "Must have caught a stray piece of shrapnel when the drone crashed. It's nothing."
"It's not nothing," she murmured, setting the core down. She reached up, her hand surprisingly warm against his cheek as she gently wiped the blood away with the edge of her sleeve. "You keep doing this. Jumping in front of danger for me."
"Well," Bastian said, his heart beating a little faster, and not from the climb. "I did promise to get you out of that basement. Can't let you die now."
"I'm serious, Bastian," she said, her dark eyes locking onto his. "For ten years, I've been completely alone. Everyone I knew, everyone I cared about... gone. I forgot what it felt like to have someone actually look out for me."
"I know," Bastian whispered, looking down at her lips. "I forgot too."
"It's terrifying, isn't it?" she asked softly, her hand sliding down to his shoulder, pulling him a fraction closer. "Realizing you don't have to face the dark by yourself anymore."
"Yeah," Bastian said, his voice a low murmur. "It really is."
"Then don't face it alone," she whispered.
She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pulled him down into a deep, desperate kiss. It wasn't gentle; it was fueled by ten years of isolation, fear, and the sudden, overwhelming relief of finding another soul in the ruins of the world. Bastian wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her tight, letting the warmth of the moment wash away the cold, grey dust of the apocalypse.
They held each other for a long moment, their breathing ragged in the quiet garage, before Ariana slowly pulled back, a soft, breathless smile on her lips.
"Well," she whispered, her cheeks slightly flushed. "That was... a very good distraction."
"Highly effective," Bastian agreed, his chest rising and falling. "My knees feel even lighter now."
"Oh, shut up," she laughed softly, giving his shoulder a playful shove. "We still have a security system to jumpstart, remember?"
"Right, the security system," Bastian said, clearing his throat and picking up the glowing core. "Where does this go again?"
"Under the main console," Ariana said, pointing to a metal cabinet beneath the flickering monitors. "There should be a heavy-duty input port with three prongs. Just align the core and push it in until it clicks."
Bastian knelt down, opening the cabinet door. "I see it. It's dusty."
"Blow the dust out first," she directed. "We don't want a short circuit after all that."
Bastian blew a quick gust of air into the port, then aligned the three metal prongs on the bottom of the cylinder. "Alright. Inserting it now."
He pushed the core home. A deep, solid click echoed from the cabinet.
Instantly, the bank of monitors above them flared to life, casting a bright, cool light across the garage. The screens flickered through several lines of code before stabilizing into a multi-camera grid.
"Oh, wow," Ariana whispered, leaning forward to look at the screens. "Bastian, look at that. The external security cameras. They actually work."
"System," Bastian said. "Are the defenses online?"
"External perimeter sensors active," the System responded. "Camera feed established. Automated defense matrix is prepared for hardware integration."
"We can see the whole street," Bastian said, pointing to the top-left monitor. "We'll know if anything approaches within a mile."
"It's perfect," Ariana smiled, her eyes shining in the blue glow. "For the first time in years, I actually feel... safe."
Suddenly, a sharp blast of static erupted from the old radio console next to the monitors.
Skrrrttt—fzzzt—
Bastian froze. "What is that?"
"Is the antenna picking up interference?" Ariana asked, her smile vanishing.
—any station receiving this transmission, respond immediately— a voice cut through the static, crisp and urgent, speaking with a distinct, rigid cadence. —this is Bravo-Actual. We have sustained critical casualties near Sector Four. The package is compromised. I repeat, the package is compromised. Need immediate extraction—
"That's..." Ariana gasped, her eyes wide with shock. "That's military jargon. Bastian, that's a live broadcast!"
—if anyone is out there... God help us... they are right behind—
The transmission abruptly cut off, replaced by a deafening, terrifying roar that rattled the speakers before fading back into static.

The static hissed loudly from the old fire station radio speaker, filling the garage with a harsh, rhythmic white noise."...any station receiving this transmission, respond immediately..." the voice repeated, fading under another wave of distortion before starting over."Is it just going to loop like that?" Bastian asked, leaning over the dusty metal console and squinting at the flickering green dials."Looks like an automated emergency beacon," Ariana said, her fingers flying across the glowing keyboard of the newly powered station computer. "It's transmitting on an old military frequency. High-band VHF. That's why our new antenna picked it up so clearly.""Bravo-Actual," Bastian murmured, shaking his head. "I remember that call sign from the early days of the collapse. It was a regional defense unit. But Sector Four... where is that exactly?""The industrial basin near the old shipyards," Ariana replied, looking up at him with wide, worried eyes. "But Bastian, that area is a death

Chapter 4: The Power of Collaboration
"God, it's thick down here!" Bastian coughed, shielding his face with his sleeve as he hit the bottom of the stairs. "The air is practically flammable!""Don't breathe it in too deep!" Ariana's voice drifted down the stairwell, echoing off the damp concrete. "And whatever you do, do not spark anything!""Easy for you to say!" Bastian called back, squinting through the pitch blackness. "I can't see my own hands down here! Really bad.""What do you see?" Ariana yelled from the top of the stairs, her tone sharp with panic. "Bastian, talk to me! What’s happening down there?""T
Chapter 3: First Sanctuary
"Watch out!" Bastian screamed, lunging forward."What—" Ariana’s voice was cut off as he threw himself over her.The concrete slab smashed down right where her head had been, shattering into a million dusty fragments. A heavy chunk struck Bastian squarely in the upper back. He groaned, the breath knocked completely out of his lungs."Are you dead?" Ariana whispered, her face inches from his in the choking dust."Not yet," Bastian wheezed, pushing himself up with a grimace. "But my back is definitely going to hold a grudge.""Did you just use your body as a shield?" she asked, her eyes wide. "Are you completely insane?""You're welcome," he grunted, grabbing her arm. "Can you crawl?""I can try," she said, wincing as she shifted. "Ah! No, definitely can't. My leg is completely useless right now.""Warning," the System's voice chimed in Bastian's mind. "Structural integrity of the basement ceiling is now at zero percent. Total collapse imminent in forty-five seconds.""We need to go. No
Chapter 2: A Cry in the Rubble
"Oof!" Bastian grunted as his boots slammed into the cracked, weed-choked asphalt of the street below. He stumbled forward, barely catching himself on the rusted, dented hood of an old sedan. "Okay, that was definitely more than a twelve-foot drop. I think my knees just took a detour through my chest.""Your new skeletal matrix successfully absorbed ninety-eight percent of the kinetic impact," the System's voice echoed directly inside his head. "However, your brain is still translating the sudden deceleration as physical trauma. It is a psychological phantom.""Yeah, well, tell my psychological phantom to shut up," Bastian wheezed, pushing himself upright and shaking out his legs. He was amazed to find that despite the hard landing, he wasn't broken. "How much time is left on that ridiculous clock?""Fourteen minutes and fifty-two seconds," the blue interface blinked in his upper-right field of vision, its numbers ticking down with merciless precision. Chapter 1: The Last Responder's System
"Almost done, old friend," Bastian said, his voice a dry rasp in the evening air. "Just look at that. Still pretty, even when there’s no one left to care."He leaned back against the crumbling concrete ledge, letting his legs dangle over the edge of the eighty-story drop. Below him, the ruins of Seattle stretched out like a vast, silent graveyard of steel and glass, swallowed by creeping green vines and layers of grey dust."Just a little longer," he whispered, closing his eyes against the warm, fading light. "Just let the sun go down, and then we can finally call it a day. No more running. No more searching."He rubbed his sore, aching knees, sighing deeply."Come on, Bastian, don't get sentimental now," he told himself, a faint, weary smile touching his lips. "You had a good run. Ten years after the world ended is a miracle anyway. You're allowed to be tired."The silence of the dead city was absolute, a heavy blanket that usually brought him peace. But today, the quiet felt heavier
