Chapter 1: The Last Responder's System

"Almost done, old friend," Bastian said, his voice a dry rasp in the evening air. "Just look at that. Still pretty, even when there’s no one left to care."

He leaned back against the crumbling concrete ledge, letting his legs dangle over the edge of the eighty-story drop. Below him, the ruins of Seattle stretched out like a vast, silent graveyard of steel and glass, swallowed by creeping green vines and layers of grey dust.

"Just a little longer," he whispered, closing his eyes against the warm, fading light. "Just let the sun go down, and then we can finally call it a day. No more running. No more searching."

He rubbed his sore, aching knees, sighing deeply.

"Come on, Bastian, don't get sentimental now," he told himself, a faint, weary smile touching his lips. "You had a good run. Ten years after the world ended is a miracle anyway. You're allowed to be tired."

The silence of the dead city was absolute, a heavy blanket that usually brought him peace. But today, the quiet felt heavier, like a final curtain drawing shut.

"Yeah," he murmured, his eyelids drooping. "Just let me close my eyes for a second..."

A sudden, high-pitched chime shattered the stillness, vibrating right inside his skull. A blinding blue light flared directly in front of his face, forcing his eyes wide.

"What the hell?" Bastian gasped, flinching backward and throwing an arm up to shield his eyes. "What is that? Who’s there?"

"System initialization sequence activated," a smooth, clear voice echoed directly in his mind, completely bypassing his ears. "Atmospheric compatibility confirmed. Host biological structure analyzed. Soul-binding sequence initiating."

"Wait, wait! Stop!" Bastian scrambled backward on his hands and knees, his boots scraping loudly against the loose gravel of the rooftop. "What do you mean, soul-binding? Get out of my head! Is this a hallucination? Am I finally losing it?"

"Negative," the voice replied instantly, appearing as glowing text on a semi-transparent blue screen hovering in his line of sight. "Your mental faculties are currently at eighty-four percent efficiency. Dehydration levels are moderate, but not hallucinatory. Soul-binding is now at twelve percent."

"I didn't ask for a soul-binding!" Bastian yelled, staring at the screen in disbelief. "I was trying to die in peace! Cancel it! Opt out! Whatever you have to do, just turn it off!"

"Cancellation is not an option," the voice said, entirely unbothered by his panic. "The Pioneer Initiative requires a local anchor. You have been selected as the Pioneer of Earth. Calibrating physical statistics."

"Pioneer of what?" Bastian stammered, but the words died in his throat.

A sudden, intense heat bloomed in the center of his chest. It didn't just feel hot; it felt like someone had poured molten copper directly into his veins. He gasped, his hands flying to his collar as he collapsed onto his side, his muscles locking up.

"Ugh! It burns!" he choked out, gritting his teeth as the heat surged down his arms and legs. "What are you doing to me? Stop it!"

"Do not fight the process, Pioneer," the System advised calmly. "Active resistance will only increase the physical discomfort. Cellular reconstruction is currently at forty-five percent."

"Discomfort? It feels like my blood is boiling!" Bastian roared, his fingers clawing at the concrete. "You're microwaving me from the inside out!"

"Your muscle density is being optimized for survival," the System explained. "Bone fractures and joint degradation from your previous years of physical trauma are being repaired. Please remain still."

"Easy for you to say!" Bastian groaned, sweat pouring down his face, dripping onto the dusty floor. "You're not the one... being rebuilt like a cheap engine!"

"Reconstruction is seventy percent complete. Calibrating core strength... calibrating agility. Upgrading sensory perception."

Bastian felt a sharp, electric jolt shoot up his spine. His vision blurred, then suddenly snapped back into focus with terrifying clarity. He could see individual cracks in the concrete meters away, could count the pebbles on the ledge, could hear the faint, distant rustle of leaves in the streets far below.

"Oh, great," Bastian wheezed, his breathing shallow as the intense heat finally began to subside, leaving behind a strange, tingling energy. "Now I can see exactly how dirty this rooftop is. Thanks a lot."

"Soul-binding complete," the System announced. "Physical optimization successful. Welcome, Bastian Novera, Pioneer of Earth."

Bastian lay on his back for a moment, chest heaving, staring up at the glowing blue interface that refused to leave his field of vision. He slowly pushed himself up, expecting his knees to pop and groan as they usually did. Instead, he rose effortlessly. The dull, constant ache in his lower back was completely gone.

"This is crazy," Bastian muttered, flexing his fingers. "I feel... like I'm twenty again. But I didn't ask for this. What do you actually want from me?"

"Primary directive established," the System responded, a new screen popping up. "Directive: Rebuild Humanity."

Bastian let out a harsh, dry laugh. "Rebuild humanity? Are you out of your mind? Look around you! There's nothing left. I'm just one guy. I don't even have a decent pair of boots, let alone a colony."

"You are the Pioneer," the System stated. "You have been granted the tools to begin. A local anomaly has been detected to assist in your initial phase."

A loud beep echoed in his head, and a circular radar map materialized in the corner of his vision. A single, blinking red dot was flashing nearby.

"Warning," the System said, its tone shifting to a slightly sharper register. "A weak human life sign has been detected within three hundred meters of your current location. Expiration timer: twenty-nine minutes, forty-five seconds."

Bastian froze, his breath catching in his throat. "What? A survivor? That's impossible. I've searched this entire grid for the last three weeks. There is nobody here."

"The signal is genuine," the System insisted. "The target's vital signs are failing rapidly. If you do not assist, the life sign will cease."

"No, no, no," Bastian said, shaking his head, taking a step back. "I'm done with that. I was an emergency responder before the collapse, okay? I spent years pulling people out of rubble, and for what? They all died anyway. Everyone dies. I'm not playing this game."

"Your heart rate indicates an increase in adrenaline," the System noted. "Your neurological pathways show a strong activation of your rescue-response instinct. Your physical body is preparing to move."

"Shut up," Bastian snapped, clenching his fists. "You don't know me. I want peace. I want to rest."

"If you do not move, the survivor will die in twenty-nine minutes," the System repeated. "Survival rate of the target decreases by three point four percent for every minute wasted."

Bastian stared at the blinking red dot. Memories flashed through his mind—the sound of sirens, the dust of collapsing buildings, the desperate grip of hands he couldn't save. He closed his eyes, swearing loudly under his breath.

"Dammit!" he yelled at the sky. "Why can't you just let me be a lazy, dying old man?"

"Because you are now the Pioneer," the System replied. "Where would you like to start?"

"How do I even get down there?" Bastian demanded, rushing to the edge of the roof and looking down. "The main stairs in this building collapsed three floors down. The elevator shaft is a sheer drop, and I don't have a rope."

"Analyzing structure," the System said. A red highlight mapped out the exterior of the building. "The external fire escape is the fastest route to the target's estimated location. However, its structural integrity is currently rated at twelve percent. Highly hazardous."

"Twelve percent?" Bastian scoffed, looking at the rusty metal stairs clinging to the side of the skyscraper. "That's practically suicide. One wrong step and I'm a pancake."

"It is the only route that guarantees arrival before the timer expires," the System said. "The choice is yours, Pioneer."

"Some choice," Bastian muttered. He took a deep breath, testing his newly restored muscles. He felt lighter, faster, stronger than he had in over a decade. "Alright. Twelve percent it is. Just don't let me fall, okay?"

"I am an interface, not a parachute," the System said. "Please watch your step."

"You have a really terrible attitude, you know that?" Bastian said, running toward the edge of the roof.

He vaulted over the concrete parapet, his boots landing hard on the first metal platform of the fire escape.

Screeech!

A loud, groaning sound echoed through the canyon of buildings as the ancient metal support beams groaned under his weight. A shower of rust fell into the abyss below.

"Whoa! Okay, that was definitely a support beam cracking!" Bastian yelled, grabbing the handrail as the platform tilted slightly.

"Warning," the System chimed in. "Structural integrity is now at seven percent. I highly recommend running faster."

"I'm running! I'm running!" Bastian shouted, leaping down the next flight of stairs as the metal began to pull away from the concrete wall behind him.
