The bunker floor buckled, a jagged shard of concrete spraying toward the ceiling as a massive, obsidian-black carrier descended through the storm, its thrusters turning the rain into boiling steam.

"Whatever that is, it isn't an extraction team," Gabriel said, his hand already on his sidearm.

"That’s a private-sector stealth cruiser," Wei Xian replied, his voice strained as he pulled himself up from the debris. "No markings. No ID. They’re effectively ghosting the entire radar grid."

"Ghosting?

"Wait, hold up," Gabriel hissed, braking his heavy cargo rig so hard the rear tire skidded sideways through the loose sand of the embankment. "Look at the gate house roof. The corrugated zinc sheets are pulled back. Someone’s been inside the wiring conduit."Wei Xian brought his utility bike to an abrupt stop, his boots dragging in the grit to steady himself as he squinted up through the tangled canopy of the coastal scrub. "That wasn't wind damage. Look at the clean shear marks on the retaining clips. Somebody took a cold chisel to the main copper line.""Which means the automated winch control box isn't just broken; it's been deliberately gutted," Gabriel muttered, dropping the kickstand with a dull metallic thud and reaching down to unbuckle the flap of his holster. His fingers brushed the cold, oiled leather of his service pistol, though he hoped to God he wouldn't need to clear the leather before noon. "Auntie Mei sai

  • Chapter 64: The Blockade Runner

"Move your cargo rig, Gabriel. The sun's already clearing the mangroves, and if we hit the northern bridge when the shift changes, we'll lose half a day arguing with those half-baked port guards about the weight of our salted fish," Wei Xian barked, his boots finding the pedals with a familiar, mechanical click as he spun the cranks of his utility bike.Gabriel sighed, his hand resting on the scarred leather grip of his heavy cargo bicycle. "We aren't arguing with anyone if we keep our heads down and trade smart, Wei Xian. I brought extra tobacco for precisely that reason. Greasing the right palm saves us a firefight.""Greasing palms just makes them expect a bigger bribe next week," Wei Xian countered, his voice sharp as he navigated the narrow wooden ramp leading off the settlement's stilt platform and down onto the packed sand of the East Coast track. "Let's roll before Mdm. Lim changes her mind and decides we both need to st

  • Chapter 63: The Village of the Dredge

"You're severely underestimating how much trouble I can cause entirely on my own," Gabriel muttered, but he didn't reach down to stop Wei Xian from tossing his heavy tool roll directly into the front basket, right on top of the carefully sorted water flasks. The canvas bag landed with a dull, heavy thud that made the wooden slats groan. "If we hit a washout on the expressway and smash every single spare spark plug we're carrying, I'm billing the repairs straight to your personal scrap ledger.""You can bill me in fresh limes and dried stingray when we get back, provided we don't end up wrapped around a concrete median strip first," Wei Xian retorted, adjusting the strap of his tool roll with a sharp yank. He swung his leg over the crossbar of a lighter, single-rider utility bike he had dragged out from under the stilt house, his boots finding the pedals with a familiar, mechanical click. "Move your cargo rig, Gabriel. The sun's already cle

  • Chapter 62: The Toll Gate

"We talked about this, Wei Xian," Gabriel said, leaning his weight against the handlebars as the cargo rig listed slightly to the left under its load of dried fish and spare iron. "The workshop can't run itself while you're out playing highway scout. Who's going to teach young Kai how to pour babbitt bearings without burning off his eyebrows?""Kai can spend two days sweeping metal shavings and filing brass washers without blowing up the foundry, and he’ll be all the better for the discipline," Wei Xian shot back, hoisting a heavy canvas tool roll over his shoulder with a sharp metallic clink of wrenches and cold chisels. He kicked the kickstand up with the heel of his boot, sending the heavy bicycle rocking on its rubber treads. "And if you think I'm staying behind to listen to Mdm. Lim lecture me about our daily scrap quota while you get yourself shaken down by every trigger-happy grease-monkey with a rusted submachine gun between

  • Chapter 61: The Causeway Dust

Gabriel pulled the heavy hemp knot tight with a sharpthwack, his eyes flicking up to meet Wei Xian’s unyielding glare across the rusted frame of the cargo bicycle. "The idler pulley is fine, Wei Xian. It’s had three coats of machine oil and a brand-new bushing since Tuesday.""It has a wobble that you could drive a fishing skiff through, and you know it," Wei Xian snapped, tossing the greasy rag onto a stack of empty fuel tins with a wet slap. He stepped down onto the sun-bleached veranda boards, the timber groaning beneath his boots. "If you throw a chain twenty miles north of the Jurong checkpoint with nobody around to spot you except stray dogs and whatever scavengers are squatting in the drainage culverts, you're going to be pushing this fifty-pound heap of iron all the way back in the dark. I'm coming with you.""We talked about this, Wei Xian," Gabriel said, leaning his weight against the handlebars as the cargo rig listed slightly to t

  • Chapter 60: Packing the Panniers

The heavy steel cargo bicycle was braced against the weathered stilt-house veranda, its broad wooden pannier racks rattling slightly against the frame as Gabriel looped a thick length of hemp rope around a crate of dried mackerel. On the porch floor beside him, a sprawl of spare bike chains, a tin box of ball bearings, and two canvas water-filtration flasks lay neatly arranged in order of weight."If you strap those grease tins any tighter, Gabriel, you're going to crack the solder right off the side before you even make it past the Jurong perimeter," Wei Xian said, stepping out from the dim interior of the workshop with a heavy brass crescent wrench slung over his shoulder. He wiped his palms on a rag that was more grease than cloth, his eyes narrowing as he inspected the rear axle. "And if you think I'm letting you pedal all the way up to the northern straits with that misaligned idler pulley, you've completely lost your mind."Gabriel paused, the loop of hemp half-t
