Leo kept his eyes tightly closed. He waited for the burning pain. He waited for his life to end. He waited for the glowing purple text of the HUD to tell him that his heart had stopped beating.
But the pain never came.
Instead, a heavy, wet thud sounded right behind him. Something large had fallen into the muddy puddle on the ground.
Leo slowly opened his eyes. He looked down at his own chest. There was no blood. There was no bullet hole. He was still alive.
"Move!" the cold, metallic voice commanded.
The figure in the dark raincoat stepped forward. They grabbed Leo by the collar of his wet jacket. The figure possessed incredible, unnatural strength. With one single, powerful pull, they yanked Leo backward, dragging him out of the alley and back into the dark, destroyed bar.
Leo stumbled over the heavy steel doorframe. He looked back into the alley just before the door closed.
Lying in the mud, right where Leo had been standing a second ago, was a massive man. It was one of Raphael’s thugs who had sneaked out the back door and circled around. The thug was holding a large, rusted machete. A single bullet hole smoked directly in the center of the thug’s forehead.
The mysterious figure had not shot at Leo. They had shot the man who was about to cut Leo’s head off from behind.
CLANG. The heavy steel door slammed shut.
The figure in the raincoat quickly slid the thick metal deadbolt across the door, locking it tight. Then, they pushed a heavy wooden barrel against the door for extra security.
Leo fell back onto the floor, landing on the broken glass and spilled beer. His body was completely finished. The purple error messages in his eyes were flashing wildly.

The figure did not answer him right away. They turned around and looked at the destroyed bar. They saw the broken bottles, the flooded floor, and the huge iron chandelier trapping Raphael on the ground.
"You did this?" the figure asked. The metallic voice sounded slightly surprised. "Subject 47, your combat logs must be extraordinary. Your physical stats are incredibly low, yet you neutralized an entire syndicate."
"I... I have to sleep," Leo whispered. His head hit the wet wooden floor. He could not keep his eyes open. The nanites in his blood had completely drained his biological energy.
"No," the figure said sharply. They walked over to Leo and knelt beside him on the broken glass. "You cannot sleep now. Raphael’s men were just street trash. The real hunters are here. If you sleep, they will cut you open and harvest the machines in your blood."
The figure reached into the deep pocket of their raincoat. They pulled out a small, metallic cylinder. It looked like an EpiPen, but it was glowing with a bright, neon green light.
"Brace yourself, Leo," the figure said. "This is going to burn."
Before Leo could ask what it was, the figure jammed the metal cylinder directly into Leo’s thigh.

The sound of highly pressurized liquid shooting into his muscle filled the air.
Instantly, Leo’s eyes shot wide open.
It did not just burn. It felt like someone had injected pure, liquid lightning into his veins. The heat exploded in his leg and rushed up his spine. It hit his heart like a hammer. It shot into his brain, turning the dark, fading world into a blinding explosion of color.
The glitching purple text in his vision shattered into a million digital pieces.
The system rebooted in a fraction of a second. The calm, calculating blue light returned to his eyes, but it was brighter and sharper than ever before.
