The rain had turned the ash into mud.

Noah Blake stood in the ruins of the central plaza, resting his weight on a notched, bloodied longsword. His chest heaved with heavy, wheezing breaths. Every breath tasted like rust, copper, and ozone. His black body armor was cracked down the center, held together by frayed straps, and blood slowly trickled from a deep tear in his thigh.

Around him, the skyline of the city was unrecognizable. Skyscrapers were hollowed-out shells, wrapped in black-stone vines that bled purple mist. The sky above didn't have clouds—it had a jagged, violet tear across the sky, pulsing like an open wound.

Around his feet lay the bodies.

Ten years. Ten long, brutal years since the Gates first split open across Earth. Noah had watched the modern world collapse in a matter of weeks. He had watched governments fall, cities burn, and millions die. Over a decade of non-stop war, he had buried his family, his university friends, his guildmates, and finally, his squad.

He was thirty-two years old, but his body felt eighty.

"Noah..."

A weak voice rasped from a pile of shattered concrete a few feet away.

Noah turned his head slowly. Lukas was pinned beneath a slab of reinforced steel. The left side of his chest was caved in, his silver armor crushed into his ribs. He was twenty-eight, but his face was gaunt, covered in burns and dark blue monster blood.

Noah limped over, dropping to one knee beside him. He didn't waste time trying to lift the steel beam. He knew enough field medicine to know Lukas’s internal organs were already destroyed.

"Save your breath," Noah said, his voice raw from screaming orders through smoke.

Lukas coughed, spit blood onto the mud, and forced a weak smile. "We really... screwed up the landing, didn't we?"

"We held the breach for six hours," Noah said softly. "You did your job."

"It wasn't enough," Lukas whispered. He reached up, grabbing Noah's forearm with a trembling, slick hand. "The command core... it didn't shut down. The Sovereign... it's coming through."

A low, vibrating rumble shook the ground beneath them. It wasn't an earthquake. It was the atmospheric pressure changing as something massive pushed its way through the tear in the sky. The violet glow grew blindingly sharp.

"Listen to me, Noah," Lukas muttered, his grip tightening for a brief second before losing strength. "You're the only one left. Don't... don't let it end like this. Find a way."

Lukas’s eyes went glassy. His hand slid off Noah’s arm and fell limply into the mud.

Noah didn't scream. He didn't cry. He had lost his tears five years ago in the fall of Seoul. He simply reached down, closed Lukas's eyes with two fingers, and pulled the dog tags from his lieutenant's neck. He slipped them into his pocket alongside six other pairs of tags.

He was the last one. The final survivor of the Human Resistance Core.

A deafening screech tore through the air, so high-pitched it made Noah's ears bleed.

From the purple sky, a silhouette descended. It didn't have wings or legs; it was an irregular, shifting mass of shadow and jagged obsidian crystal, easily thirty feet tall. A single, golden eye burned in the center of its formless body.

The Sovereign of the Void.

This was the entity that had orchestrated the fall of Earth. It was the commander behind the Gate outbreaks, the force that had driven humanity into extinction.

The pressure radiating from the creature slammed into Noah like a physical blow. His knees buckled, and he spat a mouthful of dark blood onto the ruined pavement. The sheer difference in power was absurd. Over ten years, Noah had trained his body to the limit, unlocked high-level combat techniques, and survived hundreds of life-or-death battles. Yet standing before this being, he felt like an insect facing a mountain.

"Human," a sound resonated directly inside Noah’s mind. It wasn't a voice; it was a wave of harsh vibrations that vibrated his teeth and made his vision blur. "You are the last scrap of meat on this rock. Your struggle was pointless."

Noah pulled himself back up using his sword for balance. His legs trembled, his muscles torn and depleted, but his hand gripped the leather handle of his weapon until his knuckles turned white.

"Pointless?" Noah muttered, letting out a harsh, rasping laugh. "Maybe. But I'm not dying on my knees."

He knew he couldn't win. He had no mana left, no health potions, no backup, and his body was broken. But he still had one final option—a desperate, forbidden technique he had discovered in the depths of an S-Rank dungeon five years ago.

Mana Overload.

It was a process that forcibly detonated the mana core inside a human body. It guaranteed death, tearing the user's flesh to pieces, but for three seconds, it granted power far beyond normal limits.

"If I'm going to hell," Noah gritted out, looking directly into the creature's golden eye, "I'm taking a piece of you with me."

Noah drove his mind inward, slamming his remaining consciousness directly into his internal energy core.

Crack.

A brilliant, white light erupted from beneath his skin. Pain—hotter than liquid fire—seared through his veins. His veins turned silver and bulged against his skin as pure, uncontrolled energy flooded every muscle fiber. His cracked armor shattered into dust from the pressure.

The Sovereign's golden eye narrowed. For the first time in ten years, Noah saw something like caution in the entity's cold gaze.

"Foolish," the voice echoed. "You destroy yourself for nothing."

"Not for nothing," Noah growled.

With a sound like thunder, Noah leaped.

The ground beneath his boots shattered into a ten-foot crater as he shot forward at a speed that blurred reality. The air roared in his ears. The Sovereign thrust out three massive black crystal tendrils to intercept him, but Noah didn't dodge. He let the tendrils pierce straight through his shoulders and torso, using the momentum to drag himself closer to the creature's center.

Blood burst from his mouth, but Noah didn't stop. He raised his notched sword, now engulfed in a roaring column of blinding white flame.

"This is for Lukas," Noah yelled, his vision turning completely white. "For my team! For Earth!"

He plunged the blade directly into the Sovereign's golden eye.

A soundless shockwave exploded outward, leveling the remaining ruins for miles. The creature shrieked—a sound of genuine pain that cracked the black-stone spires around them. Dark, iridescent fluid sprayed from its eye as the white mana inside Noah exploded, consuming both his body and the center of the entity.

As his flesh burned away into light, Noah felt no fear. Only a heavy, bone-deep tiredness.

It's over, he thought as his mind drifted into absolute darkness. I'm sorry, everyone. I couldn't save us.

His body dissolved into dust. His heart stopped. His consciousness sank into a endless black ocean.

Silence.

Then, in the middle of that vast, cold void, a sound rang out. It wasn't the roar of a monster or the scream of a dying soldier. It was a sharp, mechanical chime.

Ding.

In the dark behind his dead eyes, glowing neon-blue text materialized out of nowhere.

SKRRRRREEEEEECH!A high-pitched, ear-splitting shriek echoed through the cavernous subway terminal, making the concrete walls shake violently. The floating spatial crack above the train tracks ruptured wide open. Thick, pitch-black smoke poured out of the tear, swirling together like a storm before solidifying onto the tracks directly between Noah and Viper. The creature stood nearly ten feet tall. It was a quadrupedal beast covered in jet-black scales that absorbed the dim emergency lighting of the terminal. Its face had no eyes—only a split jaw lined with three rows of razor-sharp, dagger-like teeth. Crimson mana surged beneath its translucent skin, and two long, whip-like tails tipped with curved bone blades thrashed against the concrete, shattering the stone ties into dust.[System Anomaly Warning!][Forced Gate Rupture Complete!][Target Identified: Mutated Shadow Stalker (D-Rank Boss)][Warning: Boss Attack Power Increased by 50% Due to Unrefined Mana Core]"A... a D-Rank bos

  • Chapter 19: The Forced Gate

The underground subway tunnels were dead quiet, save for the rhythmic dripping of water from exposed pipes along the ceiling. The air grew thicker with every step Noah, Lukas, and Sarah took, turning ice-cold and metallic.A heavy, purple haze hung in the dark air, glowing with a faint, unnatural light."My barrier is reacting to the atmosphere," Lukas whispered, glancing down at his arms. The skin on his forearms prickled as faint blue geometric lines flickered across his sleeves without his command. The raw spatial mana leaking through the concrete walls was so dense that his Absolute Barrier was absorbing it like a sponge."That's spatial pressure," Noah said, keeping his eyes locked on the tracks ahead. His trench dagger hummed softly in his right hand, the matte-black metal coated in a sharp layer of dark green wind. "Viper has placed all twenty of the high-grade mana crystals around the central platform's rail junction. He's using them as a crude battery to force a spatial tea

The drop from the rooftop was silent. As Noah fell through the low-hanging fog, he activated his newly upgraded skill, Phase Walk. The spatial shadows wrapped around his body like a cloak, erasing his weight and sound completely. He touched down on the damp concrete outside the subway depot with zero impact, dropping into a low, ready stance behind a stack of rusted steel shipping pallets.A second later, Lukas landed to his right with a quiet *thud*, his heavy tower shield absorbing the kinetic force through a soft ripple of spatial mana. The rain had turned into a thick, low-hanging fog by three in the morning. Pier 9 was completely silent, saved for the quiet crackle of the ruined SUV’s burning tires and the ocean waves slapping against the dock pilings.Lukas strapped the heavy steel tower shield to his back. The dungeon metal felt strangely light against his spine, humming in harmony with the spatial mana pulsing beneath his skin. Beside him, Sarah stood holding her dark obsidian staff. Every time her fingers brushed the polished surface, small golden embers drifted into the cold night air, instantly dissolving the fog around her boots."Noah," Sarah said softly, glancing at the twelve opened crates filled with glowing blue and green mana crystals. "What do we do with all these? We can't exactly carry twelve heavy metal cases back to the garage on foot."Noah walked over to the stack, placing his hand over the top container."Watch," Noah said.[System Inventory Access Triggered][Storing Object: High-Grade Unrefin

  • Chapter 16: The Harbor Raid

The rain had returned by midnight, turning into a heavy, freezing downpour that battered the industrial docks on the north side of the city. Black ocean water slapped rhythmically against the rusted steel hull of abandoned cargo ships tied to the piers.Hidden inside a darkened shipping container forty yards away from Pier 9, Noah, Lukas, and Sarah crouched out of the wind.Through a narrow gap in the rusted metal wall, Noah watched the shipping yard through a pair of high-powered tactical binoculars. The entire dock was illuminated by massive floodlights mounted on tall poles, casting stark yellow glare over rows of stacked metal containers.Six heavily armed guards wearing black raincoats over tactical body armor walked steady patrol routes around a specific blue container near the center of the yard. On their shoulders, embroidered clearly in silver thread, was the logo of the Serpent Syndicate: a coiled snake wrapped around a cracked globe."That blue container," Noah whispered, h

The scorched air inside Laboratory Block B began to clear as the last remnants of smoke drifted out through the shattered windows. Down in the courtyard below, distant sirens wailed as campus security rushed toward the building, but inside the ruined room, everything was dead quiet.Sarah stood on the charred linoleum floor, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked down at her hands, completely mesmerized. Gentle, bright golden sparks danced effortlessly across her knuckles, casting a warm glow over her face. There was no agony, no tearing sensation, and no burning of her skin—only a deep, comforting heat pulsing steadily in her chest like a second heart."This... this doesn't make any sense," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of shock and wonder. She looked from her glowing hands up to Noah, her amber eyes wide. "That rock was exploding. I felt my lungs burning... I thought I was going to die. What did you do to me?"Noah didn't answer right away. He calmly pick
