Adolphus was just on time to see when his mother was slapped by Pius Graham, the young master of the Graham's family.

Pius was just twenty two years old, his age mate. And because his mother was a cleaner in their home, he and his parents treated her like trash.

“How dare you lay your hands on my mother? Have you gone mad?" Adolphus quickly stepped in to defend his mother, holding the sobbing woman tightly into his strong arms.

Tilting his head to look at his mother, he spoke to her in a low voice. “Mom, is this really necessary? You can always quit this job and not let them treat you like this." Adolphus was speaking like he had it better in his work places.

Just like his mother, he was also being treated very badly by all the people he work for, including the students he runs errands for.

He had no other choice but to take their insults and humiliation since he badly needed the money for his school. However, he wouldn't be able to take it when his mother was being assaulted by a boy his age, just because he was her employer.

“Are you challenging me? Maybe you want me to fire your mother, then you'll learn to show me some respect.” Pius flared up, closing in on Adolphus who also stood his ground.

“I won't stand here and watch you slap my mother again. That's the height of what I can take from a brat like you. Even though you're wealthy, that doesn't give you the right to mistreat your employees.” Adolphus fired back, glaring daggers at the young man who was raging before him.

As he spoke, he felt his mother's hands on his arm. She was trying to avoid any rift between the two young men.

“Adolphus, let it go. Remember that I need this job to take care of some things. Please don't fight with him.” Doris muttered quietly.

“What's going on here?” A strong voice interrupted and they all turned to see Benson Graham descending the stairs while his wife followed behind.

Even though they didn't see what transpired in the place, their cold eyes were already scrutinizing Adolphus and his mother.

Swiftly, Pius ran up to his parents and stood beside them while pointing at Adolphus and Doris. “Mom, Dad. I need you to fire that wretched woman and throw them out immediately. Adolphus hit me and called me a brat because I tried to correct his mother.”

“She's working for us and I have every right to correct her, don't I?” Pius added, still pointing at the mother and son.

He was the Grahams’ only son who has been spoiled rotten so they don't joke with anything that concerns him.

“You did what?” Brett Graham quickly flared up and closed in on Adolphus. Before he could utter a word, his left cheek had been covered by her hands in a deafening slap.

“How dare you hit my son?” She barked, angrily glaring at Adolphus whose hand was already nursing his hurt cheek.

He was not even given the chance to explain what happened and the Grahams were already taking their son's side.

“But that is not what happened Mrs. Graham. Pius here is at fault and my son only stood up for me. He didn't hit your son. In fact, it was Pius who…”

“That's enough, woman.” Benson cut into her words stopping her from completing what she was saying.

“Do you think that we're going to believe your words over our son's words. Pius will never lie to us.”

“Actually, your son is a bloody liar. And I'm sure that he's lying right now.” Abigail walked in at that moment and made the situation more tense.

She was the only one in the family who was never in support of their cruel behaviors towards the employees.

Abigail was two years younger than her brother Pius but she was bold and fearless. And was always standing up to her parents and brother.

“And what's that supposed to mean, Abigail? Why would you call me a liar before this lowlife people. I'll not take this from you.”

“I'll call you a liar anytime I want because that's what you are. There's no truth in your words.” Abigail fired back at her brother while rolling her eyes at him.

She turned to Adolphus and his mother to apologize but a strong hand took hold of her arm.

“That's enough, Abigail. You're going into your room now.”

Without another word, Benson began to drag her out of the place while she struggled to break free.

As soon as Benson and Abigail were out of sight, Doris quickly fell to her knees before Mrs. Graham. “Ma'am, I'm so sorry for everything that just happened. It was all a misunderstanding. Please don't fire me because I need this job for my son's school.”

“You should have thought of that when you let your rogue of a son hit my precious Pius. Now you've turned my daughter against her family.”

“I'm sorry, you can't continue working here.” Brett Graham snorted while glaring down at the woman on her knees.

“Stop this Mom, it's so embarrassing. She's just another human being like you and not God. You don't have to knee down before her.”

“Come on, let's get out of here and stop being their objects of humiliation.” Adolphus angrily blurted out while trying to help his reluctant mother up, his burning eyes fixed on Brett and Pius too.

He wasn't going to let them continue to humiliate his mother.

“For a church rat like you, you do have some pride in you.” Brett Graham spoke in disdain but Pius began to laugh.

“Mom, I'm sure that you'll take back your words when you see this same rat running errands for other students in school. There's no pride left in him when money is involved.”

Without giving them anymore reason to insult him and his mother, Adolphus took Doris away and out of the Graham's estate.

He was just about to hail a cab when a voice called out to him. “Adolphus, wait up.”

Adolphus stood still, gaping at Abigail with a confused look on his face. He wanted her to continue walking, but she stopped when the phone rang. “Aren't you going to answer the call?” She called out, but Adolphus didn't budge. He let the phone continue ringing, and it eventually stopped. Adolphus had this strange feeling about the caller's identity. He felt that it was his father on the line, and there was no way he'd answer the call before Abigail. The phone began to ring again, and he gradually brought it out, making sure that Abigail didn't see the screen. “Excuse me, I need to take this.” He muttered, scurrying away and finally standing out of earshot. He'd seen that it was his father on the line, and he wouldn't want to decline the call. Nicolas McAllen was a very busy person, so taking some time out of his busy schedule to call Adolphus means that he truly cared about his son.He even had to hurry to the hospital late at night when he heard the unfortunate news of Adolphu

“Don't worry about your family. They'll eventually come around.” Adolphus dismissed her fears like they were nothing. They meant nothing to him because he was now beyond their reach. The Grahams could only get him when he acted carelessly like the previous night a truck almost ran him over.Adolphus was still convinced that it was not an accident. Abigail gave him that ‘are you being serious’ kind of look. She knew her parents more than him, and there's no way they'll accept Adolphus unless he was from a rich family. And from what she had learned about Adolphus, he didn't have any other family except his mother. Abigail has not seen any man in their lives, and in the little time she interacted with Doris Stephenson, she never said anything about Adolphus's father. She always avoided answering any question that related to the topic about Adolphus's father.Doris was an orphan, but Adolphus wasn't, and his father was still alive. With those thoughts in her mind, Abigail decided to

“It's just a matter of time before the person shows himself, so being anonymous doesn't make someone a ghost.” The students went on and on in disagreement with Richmond that he had to furiously leave the place. It was all Adolphus's fault who brought the matter up. He had intentionally done that to make Richmond feel embarrassed, and he succeeded. After Richmond and his friends left the place, everyone dispersed. However, Adolphus went to get his injury treated before going back to class. Abigail was yet to find out what transpired in the accounting department because of her.She didn't know that Pius and Adolphus fought because of her. After classes, Adolphus went to wait for Abigail while his friends and their girlfriends went to have lunch together. Everyone wouldn't stop talking about the earlier incident. He waited for her by the lobby, and when she finally showed up before him, he handed the box to her, smiling. “You forgot this last time.”Before Abigail's eyes met his hand

“Now, you're bleeding.” Glover added, taking out a handkerchief from his pocket and pressing it onto Adolphus's forehead where the blood was coming out from. They stood meters away from the other students who were gossiping about the earlier incident. Some were in support of Pius and were throwing abuses at Adolphus. Only a few people didn't take sides. “Do you want to kill him? He was only looking out for his sister and did what every brother would do?” One person called out, pointing at Adolphus, who ignored them.“I would have done the same thing if my sister was in a relationship with someone like him. I'm quite sure he'd also want his own sister to end up with someone better than him.” Another person added. While they blamed and cursed at Adolphus, Pius charged at him, but surprisingly, Drake held onto him. Drake stopped his friend from fighting Adolphus, whispering to him.“You shouldn't bring yourself so low as to fight with someone like him. There are better ways to do tha

Stunned to hear what his friends have just spoken, Adolphus gave them a very serious look and stated as a matter of fact. “I don't think I can stay away from her any longer, no matter the opposition we face. In fact, Abigail is the one I want to build my life with, and I'm sure her family would have no choice but to deal with that.”Being a different person, Adolphus was sure that nothing would be able to stop his relationship with Abigail. Her family was just ranting. It's only a matter of time before they succumb and give in.In fact, they'd do everything possible to be on his good side.“Wow! That was really fast. You guys just started dating, and you're already sure about her.” Donald commented, sharing a glance with Glover. It was Adolphus's confidence for them. The naive Adolphus they knew was changing every day. The friends believed it was good to have confidence, but too much of it was bad.At that moment, Adolphus was displaying over confidence. “You said it yourself, Abi

Bradley swallowed hard, his eyes fixed on Adolphus's serious face, and with furrowed brows, he inquired. “Do you suspect anyone?”Adolphus thought about it for a moment before shaking his head. “No, I don't have anyone in mind that'd want me dead. However, I have this feeling that someone planned it to look like an accident.”Adolphus has the feeling that Ursula McAllen was the suspect. Or was it Richmond?Since Richmond had the mind to send people to beat him up to coma, it was also possible that he could pull off such a stunt. There's also his newly found household foe. His father's wife could be the one behind it.Well, he wasn't so sure because he knew nothing about her.He was yet to find out if she was capable of pulling that off.Adolphus knew nothing about Ursula McAllen and if she was just angry that her husband had another child. He wasn't sure if she'd go as far as trying to eliminate him.But what if she was the one behind the planned accident?Bradley was quiet for a mome
