The world was a blur of spinning colors, the scent of overripe mangoes, and the aggressive, brassy stomp of Joe Arroyo’s trumpets. Alejo’s feet were no longer his own. They were possessed by a rhythmic demon that demanded perfection in exchange for his continued existence.

As El Martillo—a man who outweighed Alejo by a solid hundred pounds of pure, unadulterated street-thug muscle—stumbled forward, Alejo felt the System’s grip tighten on his tendons.

[COMBO MULTIPLIER: x5] [EXECUTE: ENCHUFLA STRIKE — FINISHING MOVE.] [WARNING: DO NOT DROP THE BEAT. THE 'SHAME OF THE SILENT FLOOR' DEBUFF IS LURKING.]

“I’m really, really sorry about this!” Alejo squeaked, his voice hitting a register that only dogs and particularly sensitive bats could hear.

He didn't just spin; he pivoted. His left foot acted as a compass point, his right leg swinging around in a sharp, elegant arc that generated a terrifying amount of centrifugal force. As El Martillo reached out to crush Alejo’s throat, Alejo caught the man’s wrist again. This time, he didn't just lead him. He redirected the Hammer’s entire momentum into a spiral.

Thwack-crack-boom.

It wasn't a punch. It was physics wrapped in a tropical rhythm. El Martillo spun like a giant, angry top before losing his footing entirely. He flew backward, his massive frame colliding with a tower of empty wooden crates and a pyramid of canned tomato sauce. The sound of clattering wood and exploding tin cans echoed through the Mercado de San Juan like a funeral march for his dignity.

Alejo stood there, chest heaving, his hands trembling. He wanted to run. He wanted to find a very dark hole and crawl into it until the year 2045. But the trumpets in his head hadn't stopped.

“Wait, what? No!” Alejo hissed at the neon-blue screen flickering in his vision. “It’s over! He’s down! Let me go!”

[ERROR: KINETIC OVERLOAD DETECTED. IF YOU STOP DANCING NOW, YOUR KNEECAPS WILL VIBRATE AT THE FREQUENCY OF A JACKHAMMER FOR THREE HOURS.]

Alejo’s eyes widened. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

So, while Thug #2 and Thug #3 stared in slack-jawed horror at their unconscious leader buried under tomato sauce, and while the local vendors began to whisper and point, Alejandro Vargas did the only thing he could do to save his kneecaps.

He started doing solo shines.

Left foot tap, right foot side, cross-over, and a flamboyant shoulder shimmy. To the crowd, it looked like the most disrespectful victory dance in the history of Mexican street fighting. Alejo was literally dancing on the metaphorical grave of the market’s most feared bully.

“Look at him,” a tortilla vendor whispered, crossing herself. “He’s mocking the Hammer with the forbidden salsa of the gods.”

“He’s a monster,” another added, clutching a bag of chilies. “A rhythmic, terrifying monster.”

Alejo wanted to scream that he was just a victim of a glitchy interface, but every time he tried to speak, the System forced a rhythmic “Hah!” or a “Sabor!” out of his lungs to match the track. He felt like a human maraca, trapped in a nightmare of syncopation.

Finally, the music faded. The neon screen flashed a triumphant gold.

[MISSION COMPLETE: RECLAIM THE GROCERY MONEY.] [REWARDS: 50 EXP, +2 AGILITY, AND THE ‘LUCKY COIN’ PASSIVE.] [LOOT DETECTED: 500 PESOS (Crumpled and stained with salsa).]

The invisible strings snapped. Alejo collapsed into a heap, his legs feeling like overcooked noodles. He scrambled toward the pile of crates, snatched his Tía’s money from El Martillo’s limp hand, and tried to bolt for the exit.

“That was the most pathetic excuse for a cross-body lead I have ever seen in my entire life.”

The voice was like a bucket of ice water—sharp, cold, and dripping with an accent that definitely didn't belong in Mexico City. It was the rolling Rs and the melodic cadence of a Porteño. Argentina.

Alejo froze, his social anxiety spiking so hard he nearly tripped over his own shadow. He turned slowly, his eyes meeting a pair of fierce, dark eyes that seemed to be dissecting his very soul.

Standing by a stall selling dried hibiscus flowers was a woman who looked like she had stepped off a stage in Buenos Aires. She wore a fitted leather jacket over a crimson dress, her dark hair pulled back into a ponytail so tight it looked like it could be used as a weapon. She held a cup of coffee with the grace of a queen and the boredom of an executioner.

“Uh... hello?” Alejo stammered, clutching the crumpled pesos to his chest.

“Your timing was off on the three-beat,” she said, stepping forward. The crowd parted for her as if she were carrying a live grenade. “Your posture is reminiscent of a dying shrimp. And your footwork? It’s a miracle you didn't trip and decapitate yourself with your own clumsiness.”

Alejo blinked. “I... I wasn't really trying to—I mean, it was a fight?”

“It was an insult to the art form,” she countered, stopping inches from him. She was shorter than him, but her presence was so immense that Alejo felt like he was shrinking. “I am Lucía Fernández. I have danced in the finest theaters from Paris to Tokyo. I have seen masters of the craft. And yet, I have never seen someone move with such raw, uncoordinated power.”

She narrowed her eyes, leaning in so close Alejo could smell the faint scent of jasmine and expensive espresso. “How did you do it? You have the soul of a potato, yet your body moved with the precision of a metronome. It makes no sense.”

Before Alejo could come up with a lie—or better yet, faint—his vision flickered again.

[NEW CHARACTER DETECTED: LUCÍA FERNÁNDEZ.] [ANALYSIS: ELITE PROFESSIONAL DANCER. CLASS: TANGO VANGUARD.] [COMPATIBILITY: 98% (LEGENDARY PARTNER POTENTIAL).]

[NEW MISSION: CONVINCE THE CRITIC.] [REWARD: TANGO STYLE UNLOCKED.] [FAILURE PENALTY: THE SYSTEM WILL FORCE YOU TO DANCE THE ‘MACARENA’ IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ZÓCALO AT NOON.]

Alejo’s heart plummeted. The Macarena? In public? During peak tourist hours?

“Please,” Alejo whispered to the air, his face pale. “Just kill me now.”

Lucía arched a perfectly groomed eyebrow. “Who are you talking to, chico? And why are you looking at me like I’m about to set you on fire?”

“I... I’m Alejo,” he managed to say, his knees knocking together. “And honestly? I’d really like to go home and eat some soup. Can we just pretend this never happened?”

Lucía let out a short, sharp laugh that sounded like a whip cracking. “Pretend? You just took down a man three times your size using a modified enchufla. You’re either a hidden genius or the luckiest idiot in Mexico. Either way...”

She reached out, grabbing his chin with a firm, calloused hand, forcing him to look her in the eye. “You’re coming with me. We’re going to find a studio, and you’re going to show me exactly where you learned that ‘medical condition’ of yours.”

Alejo gulped. The System flashed a bright, mocking pink.

[MISSION ACCEPTED. PREPARE FOR TRAINING, PARTNER.]

Alejo looked at Lucía, then at the unconscious thugs, then at the glowing screen. He realized, with a sinking feeling in his stomach, that his days of being a quiet, invisible wallflower were officially, rhythmically, over.
