The silence that followed the crash was more deafening than the brass section of a thirty-piece salsa orchestra.

Alejo stood in the center of the Mercado de San Juan, his chest heaving, his mismatched socks covered in a fine mist of pulverized tomato sauce. At his feet, El Martillo—the man who had terrorized this block for three years—was currently snoring in a bed of splintered wood and dented cans. The thug’s two accomplices were frozen, their mouths hanging open wide enough to catch flies, staring at the lanky boy who had just danced their boss into a literal coma.

[BATTLE CONCLUDED.] [RATING: B- (TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY: A | STYLE: F- | AUDACITY: S)] [REWARDS CALCULATING...]

"I... I can explain," Alejo stammered, his hands shaking as he tried to smooth down his hair. "It’s a... it’s a neurological condition. Very rare. Very rhythmic. Please don't call the police. Or a priest."

The crowd didn't move. A grandmother holding a bag of fresh chiles crossed herself. A street dog barked once, then went back to licking a discarded taco wrapper. To the onlookers, they hadn't just seen a fight; they had witnessed a glitch in the matrix. A shy, stuttering boy had just transformed into a whirlwind of Caribbean grace, dismantling a human tank with a series of spins that belonged in a ballroom, not a meat market.

[REWARD GRANTED: 500 BEAT POINTS (BP)] [NEW ITEM UNLOCKED: "THE WALLFLOWER’S COLOGNE" (PASSIVE: REDUCES AGGRO FROM WEAK ENEMIES BY 10% WHEN NOT DANCING).] [SYSTEM NOTE: YOUR FOOTWORK WAS ATROCIOUS. YOU LOOKED LIKE A DRUNK FLAMINGO WITH VERTIGO.]

Shut up, Alejo thought, his face heating up to a temperature that could have grilled a steak. I didn't ask for this! I just wanted the grocery money!

Speaking of money, Alejo spotted the crumpled wad of pesos that had flown out of El Martillo’s pocket during the final Enchufla. He lunged for it, stuffing the cash into his pocket with the desperation of a man reclaiming his soul.

"Okay, great. Good talk, everyone. I’ll just... go now," Alejo whispered to no one in particular. He turned to make a break for the exit, hoping to vanish into the smoggy embrace of Mexico City before the TikTok videos started surfacing.

"You."

The voice hit him like a bucket of ice water. It wasn't the gravelly roar of a thug or the shocked gasp of a vendor. It was sharp, cold, and possessed an authoritative clip that demanded immediate attention.

Alejo froze. He slowly turned his head to the left.

Leaning against a pillar near the butcher’s stall was a woman who looked entirely out of place in the dusty chaos of the Mercado. She was dressed in sleek, athletic gear that hugged a frame built of lean muscle and iron discipline. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail so tight it looked like it might pull her eyebrows off her face. Her eyes—a piercing, judgmental hazel—were fixed on Alejo’s feet.

"Me?" Alejo squeaked.

"Your weight distribution on the third beat was a tragedy," she said, her accent unmistakably Argentinian—thick, melodic, and currently dripping with disdain. She pushed off the pillar and walked toward him with a stride so purposeful it felt like she was counting the rhythm of the universe with every step. "And your frame? Dios mío. You have the posture of a question mark. It is a miracle you did not snap your own spine in half."

Alejo blinked. "I... I was trying not to die? He had a knife?"

"A knife is no excuse for a collapsed shoulder," she retorted, stopping exactly three feet away from him. She was shorter than him, but she projected a presence that made Alejo feel like he was shrinking. She circled him like a shark inspecting a particularly disappointing piece of driftwood. "I am Lucía Fernández. I have spent fifteen years studying the art of movement. I have seen masterpieces in Buenos Aires and tragedies in New York. But this? This was... an anomaly."

[WARNING: HIGH-LEVEL ENTITY DETECTED.] [ANALYSIS: LUCÍA FERNÁNDEZ – RANK: PROFESSIONAL (ELITE CRITIC).] [SYSTEM RECOMMENDATION: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DANCE. SHE WILL TEAR YOUR TECHNIQUE TO SHREDS BEFORE YOU REACH THE CHORUS.]

Don't worry, System, Alejo thought bitterly. I’m currently trying to fuse with the floor tiles.

"Look, Ms. Fernández," Alejo said, backing away. "I don't know what you think you saw. I just... I tripped. Repeatedly. In time with the music. It’s a very common accident in my family."

Lucía’s eyes narrowed. She reached out, her fingers snapping shut around Alejo’s bicep. Her grip was like a vice. "Don't lie to me, pibe. I saw the sync. I saw the way the air moved around you. You weren't just 'tripping.' You were channeled. But you were doing it poorly. It was like watching a blind man try to paint a sunset with a mop."

"I'm a mop. Got it. Very helpful for the self-esteem," Alejo muttered.

"Who taught you?" she demanded, ignoring his sarcasm. "Who showed you the Combat Salsa? There are only a few schools left that understand the kinetic application of the Clave."

"The... the what?" Alejo’s brain was spinning faster than his last move. "Nobody taught me! A blue screen appeared in my eyes and told me I’d get a 'stiffness debuff' if I didn't shake my hips! I’m a victim here!"

Lucía stared at him for a long beat. The silence stretched, broken only by the sound of El Martillo groaning as he regained consciousness nearby.

"A blue screen?" she repeated, her voice dropping to a low, dangerous hum. She let go of his arm and stepped back, her expression shifting from irritation to a terrifying kind of predatory interest. "A System user. Here. In a taco market. And it chose a boy who looks like he’s afraid of his own shadow."

[NEW MISSION TRIGGERED: THE TRAINER’S ULTIMATUM.] [OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE THE EVALUATION.] [REWARD: UNLOCKING THE 'TANGO' SUB-ROUTINE.] [FAILURE PENALTY: PERMANENT EMBARRASSMENT & FORCED ENROLLMENT IN 'DANCE AEROBICS FOR SENIORS'.]

"Hey, wait!" Alejo cried as Lucía suddenly reached into her gym bag and pulled out a portable Bluetooth speaker.

"The thugs are waking up, flaco," she said, a wicked smile playing on her lips. She pressed a button on the speaker. "And they look very, very angry that a 'mop' humiliated them. You have two choices. You can stay here and get beaten into a pulp while your 'System' mocks you... or you can follow me and learn how to actually move."

The heavy, sensual beat of a double bass began to thump through the air. It wasn't the frantic energy of Salsa. It was slower. Darker. More precise.

[TRACK DETECTED: "POR UNA CABEZA" – CARLOS GARDEL.] [SWITCHING STYLE: TANGO (STANCE: DEFENSIVE/COUNTER).] [SYSTEM WARNING: TANGO REQUIRES A PARTNER. WITHOUT ONE, YOU WILL SUFFER A 50% PRECISION PENALTY.]

Alejo looked at the three thugs who were now scrambling to their feet, their eyes bloodshot and fixed on his throat. Then he looked at Lucía, who was extending a hand toward him, her eyes challenging him to be something more than a wallflower.

"I hate this," Alejo whimpered, his hand instinctively reaching for hers as the first violin began to wail. "I really, really hate this."

"Shut up and lead," Lucía commanded. "On my count. One... two..."

The market didn't know what was coming. And honestly, neither did Alejo.

I think he’s just napping," Alejo whispered to the crowd, his voice cracking like a dry reed. "Very suddenly. In the middle of some cans. It’s a very efficient way to rest."The two thugs who remained standing didn't look like they wanted to test the efficiency of Alejo’s 'napping' technique.
