Chapter 1

Adam Reed’s morning began the same way it always did on a normal bad, surrounded by disdain.

He sat at the vast, polished dining table of the Taylor mansion, wedged between his indifferent wife, Emily, and her sneering brother, Patrick.

Across his sitting position, his father-in-law, George Taylor, watched him like a hawk sizing up prey, his gaze sharp, disapproving, and calculating.

“Adam, tell me,” George’s voice was low, dripping with contempt, while Adam chest race, “did you even attempt to secure that deal, or did you simply waste my time and money, and all my contact?”

Adam’s jaw tightened with the questions thrown at him. He had spent days chasing that deal, bending over backward to secure a partnership for the family’s business. He’d spoken to contacts, networked with gatekeepers, tried every angle he could possibly reach, but ultimately, without the Taylor name giving him leverage, he’d been politely brushed aside, like a nobody

He opened his mouth to respond to the question, but Emily beat him to it.

“Of course, he didn’t. Adam never gets anything right in his life,” she muttered, not even glancing his way. Her tone was light but cruel, the words sharp as the sharp edge of a broken glass.

“Honestly, Dad, you should stop assigning him anything important in this place. All it does is embarrass us both inside and outside.”

Across the table, Patrick smirked, savoring his sister’s rebuke like a delicious treat. His eyes glinted with amusement, taking pleasure in watching his brother-in-law been embraced.

Adam forced himself to stay calm and gentle. He’d heard it all before—the insults, the criticisms, the belittling words that they send to me.

Years of marriage into the Taylor family had conditioned him to endure these daily humiliations, though they stung just as sharply as the first day of a young ugly boy going to high school.

But today, something felt totally different.

Maybe it was the barely concealed laughter that rippled around the table, or perhaps the complete dismissal in Emily’s voice, as if he’d been reduced to a shadow in her life. Whatever it was, it cut a little deeper than usual, leaving a wound that he couldn’t ignore at all

“I did try my best,” he finally spoke up, forcing himself to sound steady and calm. “But without a proper introduction from the family, they weren’t interested in my business.”

“Excuses,” Emily spat to my words.

“Typical. You always have an excuse, don’t you?” she gave a bitter sweet chuckle after her word.

Her eyes bored into him, dark and feeling cold, devoid of the love that had once drawn him to her. He remembered when Emily’s gaze had been warm, filled with admiration and love.

Back then, he had been something really special in her eyes—someone strong, determined, capable. But that had been years ago, before he’d allowed himself to be swallowed whole by the Taylor family’s expectations.

George leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms.

“Adam, I’m tired of wasting my breath on you. You’ve been part of this family for three years now, and what have you done for us? Nothing but embarrass us, every single time.”

Adam felt his cheeks burn, the familiar sting of humiliation creeping through his veins. He wanted to stand up, to yell, to fight back for himself and personality, but he just couldn’t. Not here, surrounded by people who saw him as nothing more than a burden and disturbance.

“Maybe it’s time you remembered your place here,” George continued, his voice ice-cold. “The Taylor name didn’t come from nowhere. We worked really hard for it, sacrificed for it, and you—” he laughed, a cruel, empty sound, that sent shivers down Adams spine“you think you can stroll in and ride our coattails? Think again.”

Adam clenched his fists beneath the table, nails digging into his palms as he forced himself to stay silent and maintain himself. He had nothing to say that would make a difference this time around. In their eyes, he was the weak one, the outsider, the charity case that Emily had married on a whim. The man who had taken advantage of the family’s wealth and status without offering anything in return for it even though he have gotten more than enough from that name.

“Adam,” Emily said, her voice devoid of any warmth, “if you can’t pull your weight, maybe you should think about leaving this family.” Her gaze was fixed on her phone, scrolling through her emails as though the suggestion of him leaving her life held no significance to anything.

All matters brought into the table doesn't deal with ' DIVORCE ', so why was she bringing this.

He stood up abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor. Everyone’s eyes turned to him, surprise flashing across their faces.

“I’ll head out at once,” he said, his voice low but steady. He looked at Emily, trying to find a trace of the woman he’d once loved, the woman who’d once loved him. But all he saw was indifference, a hollow shell where warmth had once lived.

George merely waved a hand dismissively.

“Go on, then. And don’t bother coming back until you’ve done something worthwhile with your already useless life.”

As Adam turned to leave, he heard a faint chuckle ripple through the table, a final slap, that landed straight in the face. He walked out of the dining room, each step feeling heavier than the last, each breath tighter in his chest.

The October air outside was brisk, the sky an unforgiving shade of gray that matched his mood perfectly.

He stopped on the driveway, staring at the Taylor mansion—a grand, sprawling estate that had once seemed like a dream to him but now felt like a prison.

His phone buzzed in his pocket, pulling him from his thoughts. He didn’t recognize the number, but something made him answer it without thinking twice.

“Hello?”

A voice on the other end was low, calm, almost clinical.

“Mr. Reed?”

“Yes, this is he.”

There was a pause from the both end. Then, the voice continued, “I have a proposition for you, Mr. Reed. One that might… change your circumstances for good.”

Adam’s heart skipped a beat. He had no idea who this was or what they wanted, but the words sent a strange spark of hope through him—a feeling he hadn’t experienced in far too long.

“Who is this?” he asked, suspicion mingling with curiosity.

“All in good time,” the voice replied smoothly. “Meet me tomorrow night. Seven o’clock. I’ll send the location shortly. And Mr. Reed… come alone.”

The line went dead after the Word's, leaving Adam standing in silence, the cold air biting at his dying skin. He stared at his phone, a thousand questions swirling in his mind, with clearly no single answer to any of them.

Who was this person? What did they want from me? And could he really trust them?

But as he slipped his phone back into his pocket, one thing was clear—whatever lay ahead, it had to be better than the life he was leaving behind.
