The oment the family meeting ended, Emma stormed up to Ethan. Her voice was cold and running with a whirlwind of emotions.

"I know you’re under pressure, but you don’t need to challenge anyone."

"You’ve already endured so much for this family. If you want, we can live together. We don’t need them."

Her hands gripped his arm trying to force him to Lady Theresa's room. "You know you won’t even be allowed past the company gates. Let’s just go to Grandmother, admit it was a mistake, and take back your words before this gets out of control."

"I will not appreciate being called a widow at such a young age. Not when!" She paused suddenly.

She tugged at him, but Ethan didn’t move. Instead, he placed his hands firmly on her shoulders.

For a moment, he nearly laughed at the irony. His wife begged him not to embarrass himself before a company that already belonged to him. But he caught himself, masking the humor behind a calm, neutral expression.

Emma still didn’t know. She couldn’t imagine that the man everyone called trash was the very owner her entire family was desperate to please.

Ethan gazed at her, a swell of emotion tightening in his chest. She had defended him, stood beside him when the Kilsons wanted to crush their marriage. She endured ridicule for his sake. This was his moment to repay her loyalty.

"I meant what I said, Emma," he murmured. "I promised to protect you the day we married. I will do everything within my power to keep that promise Emma."

Emma blinked, disbelief woven into her arched brows.

She didn't realize when her husband became so arrogant and cocky, especially when they could not afford to "Have you started smoking? You sound ridiculous."

Ethan chuckled. "Just trust me. This time, I know exactly what I’m doing."

*******

The next morning, Ethan woke up early, checked his email, and found Eva had already arranged his schedule: paperwork to finalize, directors to meet, and a ceremonial handover to complete.

He hailed a taxi and headed for the headquarters of the tenant business group headquarters after having rejected all of Eva's offers and pleas to pick him up . As the car neared, the crowd outside grew thick and wild.

Men of different categories, well dressed, Marchant and CEOs surrounded the gates, ready to pound on the guard and eat him up if not for his bulky nature.

"I spent over a million on this rare herb!" one man cried, shoving forward. "It would be a tragedy if I can’t present it personally!"

The guards held the line, pushing back the mob. "Please wait for instructions from the CEO!" one barked.

Ethan stepped from his taxi, the people stared at him with so much disdain, especially with his plain clothes. Among the influential looking men, he looked like an outcast.

Then the energy shifted.

A sleek black Bentley rolled up, and the crowd instinctively parted, awe and fear etched on their faces. Moments later, another drove into the place.

Jaws dropped as Natasha and Jeff emerged. Pride clung to them like a stench. They shoved people aside, their arrogance woven around their faces.

Ethan tried to turn away, but Jeff spotted him. His grin widened cruelly.

"Well, well. If it isn’t the Almighty Dustbin,"

He pulled a bottle of water from the car, drank half, then dropped it deliberately at Ethan’s feet. "Here helping the poor in my own little way. It's the least I can do "

Laughter cracked through the crowd.

Jeff spread his arms. "Tell me, trash, did you come here to pick can after everyone here? Or are you hoping to meet the CEO too? Don’t tell me you’ve actually gone mad!"

Natasha’s voice rang out, dripping with ice. "Ethan, don’t humiliate yourself. You can’t possibly believe you’ll be allowed near the new CEO. Go home before you shame Emma even more."

Her words, loud and calculated, stirred even more hatred from the crowd.

"He’s dreaming."

"Trash like him should be nowhere near here."

"Throw him out before he stains the place!"

The insults rained like stones, but Ethan stood still with a calm demeanor. "And why? If you can see the CEO, why don't you think I can?" Ethan responded.

The crowd erupted with rage.

"Audacious bastard!"

"Does he think he’s the CEO’s shoeshine boy?"

"Throw him out already!"

Jeff’s smile broadened. The crowd had become his weapon. Natasha leaned closer, her voice calculated to show emotions while tearing down Ethan's reputation. "For your own good, Ethan, leave now before the cleaners mistake you for actual garbage."

The crowd roared with laughter.

Jeff snapped his fingers, signaling his bouncer in a black suit. "Get rid of him. If he resists, beat him. The Tenents should thank me for cleaning their doorstep."

The bouncer stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. But before he could move, a guard appeared, his presence halting the chaos.

"What’s the issue here?" the guard asked, scanning Ethan’s worn clothes and then Jeff’s expensive suit.

"Do you even need to ask?" Natasha snapped, eyes blazing. "This flea is infecting us with his poverty!"

The guard raised a brow. His reply was polite but edged with sarcasm. "Ma’am, rest assured, poverty is not contagious and that has never been proven. You are quite safe within Tenent grounds."

"Besides, it has never also been proven that someone could be this pathetic yet he is alive?"

The crowd chuckled. Natasha’s face twisted.

"And who knows if he’s a spy? Or worse, a criminal!"

The crowd gasped dramatically.

But the guard’s voice stayed calm. "Every individual allowed entry has already been screened. If he is here, then he has clearance. Your safety is our priority ma'am."

Natasha’s composure cracked. She hadn’t expected resistance from a mere guard.

"Do you know who I am?" she snapped. "My husband owns Fintech, one of the city’s top tech companies! I am ordering you to remove this trash now!"

The guard didn’t flinch. "Equality is Tenent policy. Until the CEO says otherwise, no one is above that rule."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Defying Natasha was dangerous. Fintech’s power had once been formidable. But the guard stood firm, his loyalty to the company unshaken.

Before Natasha could explode further, another car rolled up through the gates. This one was different, sleek and radiating authority without needing to boast.

The door opened, and a woman stepped out. Her aura was sharp enough to slice through the noise. Skin flawless, presence commanding, heels clicking with precision.

The crowd fell silent.

"Lady Eva," someone whispered in awe. "The CEO’s personal assistant."

Natasha and Jeff’s lips curled into smug smiles. "Now you’re finished, Ethan," Natasha hissed.

With Eva here, they were certain the guard would be dismissed, Ethan would be dragged out, thrown through the gates of the building.

With his eyes wide, and his breath shaky, Paul continued to pant, his grip on the gun getting very slippery. “Who are you?” He muttered, eyes still on Ethan who was still standing right before him, unflustered, and unhurt. Apparently, the bullet missed him by an inch, piercing into the wall behind him. Ethan scoffed, looking him in the eyes. “My name is Ethan, Paul. That’s all you need to know.” He effortlessly grabbed the gun from Paul who was too terrified to drag its possession with him. “I will hold onto this while you unlock the door.” Ethan cleared his throat, turning to face the door to the room where Sabrina said her daughters had been kept. Paul swallowed hard. “I can’t let you take them, Ethan. They are my children.”Ethan growled, his patience speedily drifting away. “You don’t want to know what I can do to you, Paul. Don’t make me say this again. Unlock the door right now or I will be aiming for your head! I won’t miss just like you did!”“Okay! Okay!” Paul succumb

There was no sound, not even the slightest of it.Just silence, and the thoughts that echoed inside his head. There were feelings of caution, but reminded of the reason why he had returned to the mansion, Ethan had to move toward the staircase, seeing the blood all over the floor. He climbed the staircase, and he could still see the blood, prompting him to follow it until he arrived at the doorstep of one of the rooms upstairs. He stood still, leaned closer to the door with his ear, and listened. He couldn’t hear anything, but the blood on the floor indicated that someone could be inside the room. His eyes went down to the handle of the door, and just when he was about to grab it, he noticed the bloodstain on it as well. This made him retrace his steps, and he took a deep breath while staring at the bloody door handle. The chances of Paul being inside the room were

“What?!” Emma gasped, turning to Ethan with wide eyes. “He has your children?” She slowly returned her gaze to her aunt and said nothing else. Sabrina nodded, tears welled up in her eyes. “You have to help me get my daughters, Emma! I beg you!” She pleaded, more tears falling from her eyes. CHAPTER NINETY-ONE Emma groaned, staggering back to her feet. “I am alright.” She managed to break her silence, leaning on the wall to maintain her balance. Then she took a deep breath, turning to Sabrina. “Aunt Sabrina?” She called out, but there was no response. Unable to fight off the feeling that intensely surged into her, she quickly ran to the lady, went down on her knees beside her, and tried to get her to stand. “Aunt Sabrina?!” She called out again, but there was still no response. “Can you hear me?!” She pushed, her breath unsteady. “Get up, Aunt Sabrina! Wake up!” Tears slowly trickled down her face, and when she lowered her ear to Sabrina’s chest, she sighed heavily. “We need to take her to the hospital, Ethan!” She turned to her husband, breathing frantically. Paul shook his head in refusal. “No one is taking her to the hospital! She is not leaving my house! She is my wife!” Ethan growled at him, reminding him that he was with a gun. “That’s not your decisi
