Chapter 7

He reached into the desk cabinet and pulled out some notes, placing them on the table before Harlan and Sophia.

“Take a look at these.” He said, resting his hands below his chin as he studied their expressions.

They hesitated for a moment before picking up the papers. They exchanged curious glances between each other, and began to flip through the papers enthusiastically.

Harlan paused midway, his gaze traveling towards Alex. “Who sent these?”

“I have no idea,” Alex said with a shrug, leaning back slightly in his seat. “The butler handed them to me the moment I got back from the board meeting last night.”

Sophia’s expression tightened with concern. “This is serious, Mr. Wellington. Someone is working behind the scenes to destroy Wellington's name.”

“Exactly!” Alex snapped, hitting his palm on the table with a sharp, restrained thud. “That’s the point I'm trying to make. We need to find out who it is, before it's too late.”

“How do we intend to find the perpetrator?” Harlan quizzed.

“It's simple.” Alex replied, his voice filled with deep intensity it could almost shake off the walls. He glanced between Harlan and Sophia, his expression tightening with cold determination. “All hands must be on deck to ensure that this doom doesn't befall us.”

He leaned forward a bit, just enough for them to feel the intensity in his eyes.

“Listen to me, guys. What I’m trying to say is this—we need to start paying closer attention to the smallest details. Someone on the board is leaking confidential information about the Wellington Empire to our enemy. We have to find out who it is. And when we do…” his expression hardened, his eyes narrowing. “We’ll make them reveal exactly who they’ve been working for.”

Harlan gave a slow nod, his jaw tightening slightly in thoughtful approval. “That’s brilliant, Mr. Wellington. Should we begin the investigations immediately?”

“Not yet, Harlan,” Alex said quietly. “We need to catch them off guard. After this meeting, I’ll have my assistant arrange a full board meeting. I’ll be announcing a staff reshuffle—both old and new members will be placed under close observation.”

“That’s not all.” His voice dropped even lower, drawing them in until the room felt suffocating. “Not a single word of this leaves this table.”

He let the silence stretch longer, then leaned forward, locking his gaze first on Sophia… then Harlan.

“If any of you so much as breathes a word about this to anyone…” His jaw tightened, his voice rough as gravel. “I’ll personally make sure you don’t see another sunrise. Understood?”

They exchanged puzzled… almost terrified glances at each other, then nodded slowly.

“Good,” Alex said quietly, rising from his seat. “That’s all for now. You both may leave.”

They sprang to their feet immediately, making their way towards the door. But they stopped on their tracks as a butler rushed in, clutching yet another note… his breath uneven as he hurried straight towards Alex.

“Boss, a strange masked man told me to give this to you,” the butler said, his hands trembling as he passed the paper to Alex.

Alex had barely skimmed halfway through when the butler added something that made him freeze.

“He shot one of the guards… said it was just a warning.”

Alex looked up at him, his eyes freezing him in place… like he might rip him apart.

“A warning…” he echoed the words once again, nodding slowly as he returned his gaze back to the paper.

His eyes widened as he read through each line, getting Harlan and Sophia even more worried.

Harlan waved the butler off. “You may leave now.”

He said and began to walk slowly towards the desk.

Sophia joined him, her heart pounding with each step. “Is everything okay, Mr Wellington?” She quizzed… but before she could make it a step closer, Alex turned on his heels and sprinted out of the room.

“I'll explain everything later, guys.” His voice echoed off as he bolted out.

He made his way downstairs, clutching the paper firmly in his hands. He found James right as soon as he stepped out, and he hurried up towards him at once.

“Take a look at this.” He said, slamming the paper right onto his chest, his hand digging into his already messy hair. “What's the update on the man I asked you to investigate? Anything on him yet?”

James shook his head. “Nothing yet, boss.” He replied, fear curling through his eyes. “But… I found his address. He was Miss Thompson's ex-fiancé who dumped her to be with another woman abroad. He returned after—”

“Cut me that crap, James.” Alex snapped, shutting him off. “I'm not here to listen to some bullshit history. Just… take me to the address. Now!”

“Sure. I'll have the driver get the car right away.”

Alex stood there, stealing repeated glances at his wristwatch as he waited for them.

Within minutes, they finally arrived. The driver hopped into the car without a word, and Alex followed right after him… then James. A guard got into the front seat, sitting right next to the driver.

The driver turned on the ignition, and in no time, the car zoomed out of the building, speeding down the Estate roads.

Alex couldn't contain his anger anymore. He looked out through the window as the content of the letter replayed endlessly in his mind. It was high time he stood up to Marcus and made him pay for everything he had done—the threats, the unending cold threats—and now, the killing of a guard.

After what felt like an eternity, the car finally pulled up in front of a large, somewhat isolated mansion.

Alex turned to James, his expression questioning. “This is where he lives?”

“Yes, Mr Wellington.” James replied with a nod. “He lives alone here—no family, no friends, no rival or whatever.”

“Interesting.” Alex whispered, returning his gaze ahead. “Well, let's get straight to work.”

He stepped out of the car, with James right behind him, followed closely by the guard. They got into the building quietly… quiet enough that no one could hear their footsteps.

Just as they made it into the building, Alex signaled James and the guard to stay back, making his way to the front door.

But he froze right in his tracks the moment he heard it.

He stepped forward in a flash, grabbing the guard by the collar, his grip tight and unforgiving.“What about her?” he growled, his voice laced with fury. “Is she in danger?”The guard gasped for breath, struggling in his hold. He shook his head frantically, unable to speak until Alex finally released him.“Now talk,” Alex snapped, crossing his arms as he began to circle him. “What exactly do you have to say about her?”The guard clutched

With proper care, both she and the baby will be fine.”“Thank you, doctor.” Alex exhaled, his voice laced with a mix of panic and relief as his gaze returned to Elena. Then turning his full attention to the doctor, his expression sharpened. “I'd like to have a word with you. Outside.”The doctor gave a quick nod. “Of course, Mr Wellington. We all saw it when he took the ring.
