CHAPTER 5

Skyler huffed as David finally left, her chest dropping in a deep relief.

She then turned, her gaze landing on Everett who sat on the bed with a tissue paper, wiping his bloody nose.

"Damn, that bastard's something else,” Everett growled. “Thought you said he's a coward. How the hell does his punch have so much weight?"

Skyler sat beside him. "I'm sorry, Everett. Had no idea he had turned into a devouring animal. Was stunned."

She was reluctant. “But why did you have to text him to come over to the house, Everett?" Skyler asked, disappointed. "Never wanted him to find out this way.”

Everett grabbed a glass of water from the table nearby, trashing the tissue paper on the ground. He sipped.

"But why, Skyler?” Everett asked. "Besides, it doesn't matter how he finds out. He doesn't even deserve an explanation."

Sklyer didn’t look at him. She didn’t even reply.

Everett sipped the glass of water again before placing it back down on the table.

He shifted closer to Skyler on the bed. “Come on, Skyler." He wrapped his hand around her. “You should be happy I did this and he's gone. Gone out of your life for good.”

“He has been nothing but a leech,” he added.

Sklyer finally looked at him, a sigh escaping her lips. “I didn't want him to find out the way he did, still."

Everett frowned but didn't answer right away.

Silence kicked into the moment.

However, after some minutes, Everett spoke. "The job is getting ready. Be prepared to start work next week.”

Skyler's face lit up. Her expression changed. "Seriously? I will start work next week?”

Everett nodded. "Yes,” he responded with a proud look on his face. "The process is working perfectly as planned so far. That lady I told you about…." Skyler nodded, remembering.

“I'm searching for a possible means to get her fired so you can take over her place." Everett continued. "And my assurance is that it's getting done next week. Everything is perfectly in place. Once she's fired, I'll then tell the chairman that I've got someone perfect for the position.”

Skyler's smile broadened. She jumped on Everett's lap, hugging him tightly. “I'm so happy right now, Everett. Thank you so much.” She peppered a kiss on his cheek.

Everett's shoulder rose with pride. “This is why I'm better than that bastard," he bragged, his voice condensing. "Expect more of this from me. Cash. Opportunities. Even connections. I'll give them all to you.”

Just then, a knock on the door interrupted the moment.

The conversation paused.

"Who's that?”

"It's me, sir.” a voice responded from outside.

“That's the delivery guy. He's here with it."

Skyler shifted from his lap onto the bed.

Everett stood up. “I'll quickly grab it and be with you in no time. Today's gonna be something. Gonna bang you that you'd be screaming so hard and loud."

Skyler licked her lips. “Go ahead. I'm waiting for that, baby."

Meanwhile, as David stepped out of the compound completely, his eyes were filled with tears, one thousand memories of the happiest moment he had had with Skyler—the moment where they both shared laughter. The moment when she told him he was everything a woman needed—came rushing back.

Bitterness and fury flooded his heart. It pounded.

Those were all deceptive lies. A scope to continue fooling him, making him believe she truly loved him.

But she never did.

Betrayal cut through. “Fuck her! She used me.”

He didn't know when he yelled out of frustration.

Onlookers stopped to look at him.

He glared. “Huh? What? Why are you staring at me like that? Get lost, you all!” he barked.

They jerked then started walking off.

“He's gone out of his mind!"

“He's drunk."

“Someone must have betrayed him."

The people murmured as they walked away.

As David trudged, swaying, he finally tumbled right under a tall, giant tree, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"I did everything for her. Everything a person would do for someone he loves. But what did she do? She called them trash like it meant nothing to her.”

He started recounting everything he had done for Skyler. How he had helped and supported her.

Minutes went by.

At some point he couldn’t talk. He just stared, tears blurring his vision.

His face was tightened. Bitterness. Anger. Revenge. All written all over his face.

At that very minute when he seemed lost—

His phone vibrated and started to ring.

Snapped out of his thought, David paused, wiped his tears, before reluctantly reaching out for his phone in his pocket.

He glanced at the screen and realized it was his colleague from work–the one who had always been by his side.

He wiped his eyes, cleared his throat before picking up. “Hello?” He answered, trying not to sound broken.

“David, where are you? You need to get here right away. Madam has arrived. She demands to see you. Hurry down right away or else you will lose your job.”

“I'm coming. Right away. Give me some minutes. I'll get there now.”

The call ended.

David shoved his phone into his pocket and dashed to the road, immediately stopping a taxi, heading straight to the restaurant.

The old man shook his head sideways. "That's not what I meant.” He responded politely. "The last time I encountered you, you looked like someone without a background. I mean, you couldn't even pay me. You even attempted to give me your clothes.” A sharp pause before he continued. "How come about this?”David shifted on his seat, pretending he didn't know what the old man was talking about. "About what?”A sigh escaped. "About everything. Everything that happened back there. The influential Ava seemed to adhere to your command. In fact, you seem powerful with a strong background. Wealthy.” He looked ba
