Draven lay in the dirt, his vision swimming in and out of focus. The world felt distant, like he was underwater. Every breath hurt. Every heartbeat sent fresh waves of pain through his broken body.

Somewhere in the darkness, he could hear Elena screaming. The bandits were dragging her away, and he couldn't do anything to stop them.

"Get up," he told himself. "Move. Do something."

But his body wouldn't listen. The pendant against his chest was cold and silent. Whatever power it had given him was completely spent.

His eyes started to close, darkness creeping in from all sides. Maybe this was it. Maybe he'd finally pushed himself too far.

Then he heard something that made his eyes snap open.

Shouting. Not from the bandits dragging Elena away. From the other side of the camp. Panicked voices, the clash of steel, screams of pain.

"What the hell?" one of the nearby bandits said. "Who's that?"

"I don't know! She just came out of nowhere!"

"Stop her! Stop her before she reaches the boss!"

The walk back to camp was silent. Nobody seemed to know what to say about what they'd just witnessed.Sylvrae kept glancing at Draven, her expression caught between impressed and disturbed. The other Thornspike warriors whispered to each other, shooting looks at the glowing Draconus scales he carried."That was insane," Sylvrae finally said when they were halfway back. "I've hunted Draconus before. It takes hours of careful planning and coordinated attacks. You just... talked to it.""I got lucky," Draven said simply."Lucky? You matched its fire breath. You fought it like you'd done it a hundred times before." She stopped walking and turned to face him. "What kind of training did you have?""The hard kind.""That's not an answer.""It's the only one I'm giving."Sylvrae studied him for a long moment, then shook her head. "You're full of secrets, Swift Blaze.""Everyone has secrets.""Not like yours." But she dropped the subject and kept walking. They reached the camp to find Elena si

Draven opened his eyes as morning light filtered through the tent. His body felt different. Not the heavy, painful weight of yesterday, but light. Strong. Whole. He sat up slowly, expecting pain to shoot through his ribs and shoulder. Nothing. Just a slight stiffness, like he'd slept in an awkward position."What the hell?" he muttered, looking down at himself. The bandages were still wrapped around his chest and arms, but underneath them he could feel that his wounds had closed completely. No pain, no bleeding, no weakness. He unwrapped the bandage on his arm. The deep gash that had been there yesterday was now just a thin pink line. Another day and it would probably disappear completely. The tent flap opened and Aldrus entered carrying a tray of breakfast. He stopped when he saw Draven sitting up."You're awake early," the butler said. "And sitting upright. Remarkable.""I feel fine," Draven said, flexing his previously dislocated shoulder. "Better than fine, actually. I feel like I

Draven woke to the smell of tea.His eyes opened slowly, vision blurry and unfocused. He was lying on something soft. A bed. Clean sheets. The ceiling above him was wooden and unfamiliar."Ah, you're awake," a cultured voice said. "Excellent timing. I was just about to check your bandages."Draven turned his head and saw Aldrus sitting in a chair beside the bed, holding a cup of tea. The old butler looked exactly as he had during the fight, perfectly groomed and composed."Where..." Draven's voice came out as a croak."The Thornspike family's field camp, about three miles from that dreadful bandit settlement." Aldrus stood and set down his tea. "You've been unconscious for roughly eight hours. Your injuries were quite severe, but nothing permanent."He moved to Draven's side and began checking the bandages wrapped around his chest and arms with efficiency. "Dislocated shoulder, which I've reset. Multiple lacerations, all cleaned and stitched. Severe exhaustion and magical depletion. Y

The crack in the ground spread out from where Aldrus stood, spider-webbing across the dirt in all directions. It wasn't a big crack. Just a thin line that suggested something far heavier than an old man had just put weight on that spot. The bandits stopped laughing.Gorath's eyes narrowed, and he subtly shifted his stance into something more defensive. "You're not just a butler.""Oh, I most certainly am," Aldrus said pleasantly. "I prepare Miss Sylvrae's meals, maintain her equipment, manage the household accounts, and ensure her father's estate runs smoothly. Those are my primary duties."He took another step forward. Another crack appeared in the ground."However," Aldrus continued, "the Thornspike family has certain... expectations of their servants. We are required to be proficient in various skills beyond traditional butler work.""Stop him," Gorath ordered his men. "Now."Three bandits rushed forward, weapons drawn. They surrounded Aldrus from different angles, clearly thinking

Before the old man showed up, Sylvrae fought with everything she had, but it wasn't enough. The gravity pressing down on her felt like someone had dropped a mountain on her shoulders. Every breath was a struggle. Her muscles screamed in protest as she tried to push herself up, but her body wouldn't cooperate."Stop fighting," Gorath said, his voice almost gentle. "You're only making it worse for yourself.""I don't... give up," Sylvrae gasped, her fingers clawing at the ground as she tried to reach her fallen spear.Gorath watched her struggle with something like amusement. "Thornspike pride. Your family is famous for it. Also famous for getting yourselves killed because of it."He increased the gravity another degree, and Sylvrae's arms gave out. She collapsed face-first into the dirt, unable to even hold her head up anymore.Behind her, Elena whimpered in fear. The poison was still making her weak and disoriented, but she understood enough to know that their rescuer was losing."Ple
