Dawn bled slowly over the edge of the forest, painting the mist gold and gray. Kael and Lyria walked in silence along a dirt path littered with frost. The night’s battle at Karth still clung to Kael’s mind — the screams, the smell of burning wood, the blue glow of his system panels hovering before his eyes long after the fires had died.

Now he had company. Not a friend, not yet — but a companion.

Lyria moved with the wary confidence of someone who’d survived too much. Her armor was scratched, her cloak torn, her boots caked with mud. But her sword was sharp, and her eyes sharper.

“You don’t talk much,” she said finally, breaking the quiet.

Kael adjusted the strap of his shield. “Not much to say.”

“You saved that village. That’s something.”

“I didn’t do it for gratitude.”

“Then why?” she asked.

Kael hesitated, then shrugged. “Because it was right.”

Lyria smirked faintly. “Then you’re already better than most mercenaries I know.”

The conversation faded, replaced by the hum of the wind and the occasional chirp of unseen birds. But the peace didn’t last.

Kael’s system flared suddenly, casting faint light across his vision.

[Warning: Hostile presence detected.]

[Quest Generated: Survive Ambush — Reward: 200 EXP, Random Drop.]

He raised a hand. “Stop.”

Lyria froze instantly, her instincts kicking in. “How many?”

Kael’s eyes scanned the treeline. The shield pulsed in his grip, warm and alive. “Five. Maybe six. Surrounding us.”

The bandits emerged as if conjured from the fog — cloaked figures with crossbows and rusted blades. Their leader, a hulking man with a jagged scar across his jaw, grinned.

“Well, look what crawled out of Karth,” he said. “The kingdom’s fallen hero and his little sellsword. There’s a bounty on your head, Shield.”

Kael didn’t move. “How much?”

“Enough to drink for life.”

“Then you’ll die thirsty,” Kael replied.

The scarred man barked a laugh. “Kill him. Bring me the woman alive.”

Crossbows twanged. Kael reacted on instinct. His shield expanded, forming a translucent barrier that shimmered with faint runes. The bolts struck and shattered harmlessly.

[Skill Activated: Energy Barrier Lv.1.]

[Durability: 80%.]

Lyria charged forward, cutting down one attacker in a blur of steel. Kael followed, blocking another’s blade and slamming his shield into the man’s chest. The impact cracked ribs.

[Counterstrike Successful. Damage x1.5.]

But the bandits kept coming — coordinated, relentless. The leader drew a two-handed axe and swung at Kael’s side. The blow hit like a hammer, sending him sprawling into the mud.

The interface flared red.

[Health: 62%]

[Defense: +3 from Shield of the Forsaken.]

Kael gritted his teeth and rose, pain radiating through his arm. “Lyria!”

She was holding her own but barely — one cut across her thigh slowed her movements. “You have a plan?”

“Working on it.”

The scarred man’s laughter echoed through the clearing. “You’re not much of a hero without your kingdom to protect you.”

Kael’s fingers tightened around the shield. He focused, reaching for the system — for something, anything that could give him an edge. The interface flickered, recognizing the desperation in his pulse.

[Skill Tree Unlocked: Adaptive Defense.]

[Select Evolution Path.]

[1] Reinforced Shield — Doubled durability, fixed defense.

[2] Reactive Core — Converts absorbed damage into energy.

Kael didn’t hesitate. “Reactive Core.”

Light burst from the shield. The runes along its rim ignited, pulsing like a heartbeat. Every strike that hit now fed it power instead of breaking it.

The next swing from the bandit leader struck the surface and ricocheted, sending the man stumbling.

[Reactive Core: Energy Stored — 60%.]

Kael exhaled slowly. “Let’s see how this works.”

He slammed his palm against the shield. Energy erupted outward in a concussive wave, blasting the surrounding attackers off their feet.

[Skill Unlocked: Kinetic Discharge Lv.1.]

[Effect: Release stored energy to damage enemies within 5 meters. Damage based on absorbed force.]

The forest went silent for a heartbeat. Then, with a groan, the bandit leader dropped to his knees, coughing blood.

Kael stepped forward, his boots splashing through the mud. “You wanted the Shield Hero. Here I am.”

The man tried to lift his axe again, but Kael brought his shield down with a brutal, final strike.

[Target Eliminated. +180 EXP.]

[Random Drop: Enchanted Core Fragment.]

The remaining bandits fled into the mist. Lyria limped to Kael’s side, wiping blood from her sword. “That… was something.”

He glanced down at his shield, still glowing faintly from the stored energy. “Guess I’m learning.”

She smirked. “Guess so. Next time, remind me to stand behind you.”

Kael opened his interface again.

[Level Up: 5 → 6.]

[Skill Enhanced: Reactive Core Lv.2.]

[New Passive: Energy Conversion Efficiency +10%.]

Lyria sank to the ground with a wince. “You got healing in that fancy system of yours?”

Kael shook his head. “Only defense.” He hesitated, then tore a strip from his cloak and crouched to bandage her wound.

She raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t peg you for the gentle type.”

“I’m not,” he said simply. “But I’m not heartless either.”

As he tied the cloth, the system flickered again.

[Emotional Sync Detected: Compassion.]

[Hidden Bonus: +2 to Party Affinity.]

Kael didn’t understand what that meant yet, but the warmth that followed was unmistakable.

The mist thickened as the forest swallowed the aftermath. Lyria stood, testing her leg. “If the world’s going to keep trying to kill you, you might as well let me help. I’ve got debts and you’ve got power.”

Kael looked at her, uncertain. “And if I say no?”

She grinned, sharp and reckless. “Then I’ll follow you anyway. You draw trouble like fire draws moths.”

He sighed but nodded. “Fine. Just don’t get in my way.”

“Deal.”

As they walked deeper into the forest, the system pulsed quietly, almost approvingly.

[New Party Formed: Kael Ardent + Lyria Vance.]

[Bonus: 10% EXP Boost when fighting together.]

Kael tightened his grip on his shield. He still had no home, no allies but one, and the world branded him a traitor. But for the first time, his steps felt deliberate — not like a man running from his fate, but one carving his own through it.

And somewhere within the digital hum of the system, a new line appeared — faint, unseen by him but recorded all the same:

[Hidden Objective Unlocked: Redeem the Shield.]

The northern border fortress trembled under the influence of the Riftstorm. The violet-hued currents had intensified overnight, and the air itself hummed with unstable energy. Aedan stood atop the fortress battlements, Shield lattice glowing faintly against the gathering darkness.“Scouts report multiple Rift wolf packs converging on the eastern gate,” Lyria said, her voice sharp as she scanned the horizon. Her blades reflected the Riftstorm’s eerie light. “These aren’t normal packs. They’ve adapted to the storm—faster, smarter, coordinated.”Solara adjusted her arcane sigils, letting them hover in a protective dome around the fortress. “The Riftstorm itself is feeding them intelligence,” she said. “It’s like the wolves are extensions of the storm. They learn as they fight.”Aedan exhaled, feeling the Shield pulse against his arm. The Riftstorm’s influence was no longer confined to the northern frontier. Its violet-tinted currents had begun spilling over neighboring borders, causing tremors and energy surges that local kingdoms could not ignore. Rumors spread quickly: anomalous beasts sighted, entire villages reporting strange phenomena, and soldiers claiming they had glimpsed living storms moving with intent.Aedan stood atop a ridge overlooking a valley still smoldering from a recent skirmish with Rift-born anomalies. His Shield pulsed faintly against his arm, resonating with the subtle shifts in the ambient Riftstorm energy.“Other kingdoms will notice soon,” Solara said, eyes narrowing as she observed the horizon. “They won’t wait for explanations. They’ll assume it’s your doing—or someone’s manipulations.”Lyria’s grip on her blades tightened. “We’ve held our line in the north, but diplomacy isn’t our strong suit. If envoys arrive expecting answers, we’ll have to provide them.”Aedan inhaled, feeling the N

  • Chapter 134-Recruiting the Rogue Swordsman

The Floating Rift Islands had barely stabilized from the previous onslaught, yet the violet-lit horizon continued to churn with the restless energy of the Riftstorm. The figure’s movements were fluid and deliberate, clearly skilled, but operating independently of the ongoing Riftstorm chaos. He leapt to a higher shard, Shield tendrils stabilizing his landing, and watched as the swordsman effortlessly deflected a small wave of Rift-infused debris with precise, almost preternatural sword strikes.“Who’s there?” Aedan called out, raising the Shield. The figure stopped, spinning slowly to face him—a young man with jagged black armor, his eyes sharp and calculating, twin
