Chapter one: The Four heroes summoning

The world trembled as light swallowed the old library.

Kael Ardent, a twenty-one-year-old university student known for his quiet brilliance and his obsession with forgotten myths, felt the air around him twist. The book he had been studying—an ancient volume bound in cracked leather titled Chronicles of the Four Shields—vibrated in his hands. Its words glowed and reshaped themselves into a single command: “Answer the call.”

Before he could blink, the world vanished.

Kael landed hard on marble. His ears rang with the echo of voices, foreign yet oddly familiar. As his eyes adjusted, he saw three others standing nearby, each looking as stunned as he felt. The vast chamber surrounding them shimmered with blue sigils carved into the walls. Stained-glass windows depicted great beasts devouring cities while four figures stood in defiance, each holding a weapon of legend—a sword, a spear, a bow, and a shield.

Before Kael could speak, a man in regal robes stepped forward. His silver crown gleamed under the crystal chandeliers.

“Brave heroes of another world,” the king declared, his tone echoing with practiced grandeur. “You have been summoned to save the kingdom of Erenthia from the Waves of Calamity. You are the prophesied Four Cardinal Heroes.”

The room murmured with awe.

Kael’s eyes dropped to his left arm. A round, ethereal shield was embedded into his wrist, faintly glowing. He tried to will it off, but it refused. The others looked equally marked—a blond swordsman with a gleaming blade, a red-haired man wielding a spear, and a calm, bespectacled youth with a bow made of light.

The sword-bearer grinned. “So it’s like an RPG. I’m the Sword Hero, huh? Awesome.”

The others nodded, their confidence immediate, their tone casual—as if they had landed in a game, not a war.

Kael, however, felt unease settle in his gut. The shield pulsed faintly, heavy and cold.

The king’s gaze turned on him. “And you, young man, bear the Shield. The most ancient and defensive of the four.”

Kael bowed slightly, uncertain. “What exactly do you mean by ‘Waves of Calamity’? And why us?”

The king explained the prophecy—how the world faced periodic invasions of monsters born from rifts in time. Only the four summoned heroes could repel them. Each hero, it was said, came from another realm to fight on behalf of humanity.

But something in the king’s eyes seemed off. Calculated.

Kael noticed how the courtiers whispered among themselves, some smirking faintly when they looked his way.

After the introduction, attendants led the heroes to a grand dining hall filled with food and gold. Servants bowed deeply, but Kael couldn’t shake the tension. The sword, spear, and bow heroes laughed and compared their stats—yes, stats—that appeared when they focused on their weapons.

Kael tried to summon his interface, and to his surprise, blue panels appeared in his vision:

[Name: Kael Ardent]

[Weapon: Legendary Shield]

[Attack: 1]

[Defense: 32]

[Skills: None]

His smile faded. One attack point?

The others noticed and chuckled.

“Guess you’re the tank,” said the Spear Hero, clapping him on the shoulder. “You’ll have to protect us while we do the real damage.”

Kael forced a laugh, but their words burned.

Later, when the king offered each hero gold and resources, Kael was the only one who didn’t receive offers from knights or adventurers to join his party. Everyone flocked to the Sword, Spear, and Bow Heroes—strong, flashy, confident. Kael, with his shield and quiet demeanor, was left standing alone in the echoing hall.

He approached one of the knights. “Would you consider—”

The knight cut him off with a polite bow. “Forgive me, Shield Hero. But we seek victory, not defense.”

Kael watched them leave, laughter fading down the corridor.

Only one person stayed behind. A young woman with honey-brown hair and clever eyes. She introduced herself with a charming smile. “My name is Myna. I’ll join you, Shield Hero. You’ll need someone who can fight.”

Relief flooded Kael. “Thank you. Truly.”

She smiled sweetly. “Let’s build our strength together.”

That night, in the guest chambers of the royal palace, Kael lay awake, staring at the glowing interface hovering before him. The numbers were pitiful compared to the others, and he could only equip defensive gear. He tried swinging his shield, but it didn’t even dent the training dummy. Still, Myna’s words echoed in his mind—warm, encouraging, genuine.

He allowed himself a small, hopeful smile.

Maybe he could still prove himself. Maybe being the Shield Hero wasn’t a curse.

He didn’t yet know that before the next dawn, that hope would be shattered—and his name forever stained.
