The symbols on Zephyr's scales were not random.

Kael had always known that. Deep down, he had felt it. But he had been too tired. Too scared. Too busy trying to keep the creature alive to think about what the markings meant. Now Mira had said the words out loud. And he could not unsee them.

"They look like writing," Mira said. She was kneeling beside Zephyr. Her finger traced the patterns on its scales. "Look at this line. It curves like a letter. And this one. It loops. These are not natural markings. Someone put them there. Or something."

Kael knelt beside her. He looked closer. She was right. The markings were organized. They formed patterns. They repeated in certain places. They were deliberate. They meant something.

"I never noticed that before," he said. "I mean, I saw them. But I did not think about what they could be. I was too worried about keeping Zephyr alive."

Mira looked at him. "You have been through a lot. It is okay to miss things. But now you have to pay attention. These markings are important. They could tell us what Zephyr really is."

Kael thought about Elder Orin. The old man had been kind. He had helped him in the library. He had given him the book about rare beasts. Maybe he could help again.

"I know someone," Kael said. "An old Beast Tamer. He knows about rare creatures. He might be able to read these symbols. I am going to find him."

Mira stood up. "I will come with you."

Kael shook his head. "No. Stay here with Zephyr. Watch over it. If anyone comes, hide. I will be back as soon as I can."

Mira nodded. She understood. She would protect Zephyr with her life. She had already proven that much.

Kael left the shelter. He moved through the back alleys. He stayed in the shadows. He had learned to be careful. The city was full of people who would hurt him if they recognized him. He could not take any chances.

He reached the library. The doors were open. He slipped inside. The librarian was at her desk. She saw him and frowned.

"You again," she said. "I told you to stay away. This library is not for failures."

Kael ignored her. He walked past her desk. She called after him. He did not stop. He went to the corner where he had met Elder Orin. The old man was there. Sitting in his usual spot. Reading a book.

"Elder Orin," Kael said. His voice was urgent. "I need your help."

The old man looked up. He smiled when he saw Kael. "Ah, the young tamer. I wondered if you would come back. What do you need?"

Kael pulled out a piece of paper. He had traced the markings from Zephyr's scales. He handed it to the old man.

"I need to know what these symbols mean," he said. "They are on my creature. They are not random. They look like writing. But I cannot read them. I do not know what they say."

Elder Orin took the paper. He looked at it. His eyes went wide. His hands started to shake.

"Where did you see these?" he asked. His voice was low. Serious. "Tell me exactly."

Kael hesitated. He did not know if he could trust the old man. But he had no choice. He needed answers.

"They are on my creature," he said. "The one I bonded with. The one everyone calls a defect. I noticed them the first day. But I did not think they meant anything. Now I am not so sure."

Elder Orin stood up. He grabbed Kael's arm. His grip was strong. "Wait here. Do not move. I will be right back."

He walked toward the restricted section. The part of the library that was locked. The part that only the most trusted people could enter. Kael watched him go. His heart pounded. What was happening?

The old man returned a few minutes later. He carried a book. It was covered in dust. The cover was made of cracked leather. The pages were yellow and crumbling. He set it on the table and opened it.

"This book is forbidden," he said. "It is not supposed to exist. The Council tried to destroy every copy. But some survived. This is one of them."

Kael looked at the book. The pages were filled with illustrations. Strange beasts. Creatures he had never seen before. Creatures with wings of fire. Scales of gold. Eyes that glowed like stars.

"These are Primeval Beasts," Elder Orin said. "Creatures from an age before the current Beast Taming system. They were powerful. Too powerful. The rulers of that time could not control them. So they sealed them away. They erased them from history. They made the world forget."

Kael felt his blood run cold. Primeval Beasts. He had read about them in the other book. But this book was different. It was older. More detailed. More dangerous.

He pointed at an illustration. It showed a creature with golden scales and cracked wings. It looked exactly like Zephyr.

"That is my beast," he said. His voice was barely a whisper. "That is exactly what Zephyr looks like."

Elder Orin nodded. His face was grave. "I suspected as much. The markings on your creature match the symbols in this book. They are the seals. The bindings. They were placed on the Primeval Beasts to keep their power contained."

Kael stared at him. "Contained? You mean Zephyr has power? Real power?"

"More power than you can imagine," Elder Orin said. "But that power comes with danger. The Primeval Beasts were sealed for a reason. They are not like ordinary beasts. They are intelligent. They have their own will. Their own desires. They cannot be controlled. They can only be bonded with. And if the bond is not strong enough, they will destroy everything."

Kael looked at the book again. He saw more illustrations. Battles. Wars. Cities burning. Empires falling. The Primeval Beasts had caused all of it. They had brought destruction and chaos.

"Then why did Zephyr choose me?" he asked. "Why did it bond with a failure like me?"

Elder Orin closed the book. He looked at Kael with kind eyes.

"Because you are not a failure," he said. "The Primeval Beasts do not choose based on power or status. They choose based on heart. They choose based on loyalty. They choose based on love. Zephyr chose you because you saw its worth. You saw its value. You refused to let it die. That is why it chose you."

Kael felt tears in his eyes. He wiped them away.

"What do I do now?" he asked. "How do I keep Zephyr safe? How do I unlock its power?"

Elder Orin shook his head. "I cannot tell you that. The secrets of the Primeval Beasts are lost. Even this book does not contain all the answers. You will have to find your own path. You will have to learn as you go."

He leaned closer. His voice dropped to a whisper.

"But I can warn you. There are people who would kill for a Primeval Beast. People who have been searching for one for years. If they find out what you have, they will come for you. They will stop at nothing. You have to be careful. You have to be smart. Trust no one. Not even those who claim to be your friends."

Kael nodded. He understood. He had already learned that lesson. The world was full of people who would betray him. He could not afford to be naive.

"Thank you," he said. "I will never forget your kindness."

Elder Orin smiled. "Just survive, young tamer. Just survive and prove them wrong. That is all the thanks I need."

Kael left the library. He moved through the shadows. His heart was pounding. His mind was racing. He had so much to think about. So much to process.

He reached the shelter. Mira was waiting. She looked up when he entered. Her eyes were hopeful.

"Did you find anything?" she asked.

Kael nodded. He sat down beside Zephyr. He looked at the creature. It was still sleeping. Still breathing. Still alive.

"It is a Primeval Beast," he said. "A creature from a forgotten age. It has power. Real power. But that power is dangerous. People will come for it. People who will kill to get it."

Mira's face went pale. "What do we do?"

Kael looked at her. He looked at Zephyr. He looked at the crumbling walls of their shelter.

"We hide," he said. "We learn. We prepare. And when the time is right, we fight."

Zephyr opened its eyes. Those golden eyes. They were brighter now. Stronger. It looked at Kael. It chirped. A soft sound. A trusting sound.

Kael reached out and touched its head. Its scales were warm. Alive. It was changing. It was growing. It was becoming something incredible.

"One day," Kael said. "One day, we will show them all. We will show them what you really are. We will make them kneel."

Zephyr chirped again. It agreed. It believed in him.

Kael felt something shift inside him. A strength. A determination. He was not the same person who had walked out of the arena. He was harder. Stronger. More focused.

He had a purpose now. He would protect Zephyr. He would unlock its power. And he would make the world remember its name.
