Tick. Tick. Tick.
The sound came from the ceiling of the old subway terminal. It was slow. It was heavy. It was the sound of death.
Ron Donaldo looked up at the cracked white tiles. He did not panic. His brain worked like a fast computer. He had three minutes. Three minutes to save his team. Three minutes to save the war.
"Silas!" Ron shouted loudly. "Grab the main hard drives! Leave the big screens! Leave the generator!"
Silas, the nervous hacker, jumped out of his chair. His hands were shaking. He pulled the thick black wires out of the computers. He grabbed three small, silver hard drives and shoved them into his backpack. "I have the data, Sir! I have the money codes!"
"Jax!" Ron yelled. "Break the back door!"
Jax, the giant fighter with no tongue, did not say a word. He ran to the heavy iron door at the back of the terminal. The door was rusted shut. It had not been opened in thirty years. Jax hit the door with his massive shoulder.
BANG.
The iron door bent, but it did not open.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
The timer above them was getting faster. Dust began to fall from the ceiling. Small pieces of rock hit the floor.
Isabella Voretti looked at her phone. The red tracking light was still blinking. She realized she had brought the killers right to their secret base.
"It is my fault," Isabella cried. Her dark eyes were full of tears. She raised her hand to throw the phone away.
"Wait!" Ron grabbed her wrist. His grip was strong but gentle. "Do not throw it here. Give it to me."
Ron took the phone. He looked around the large, empty terminal. He saw a deep, dark drain hole in the floor. Water flowed quickly down the drain into the deep city sewers. Ron dropped the phone into the water. The water washed the phone away, carrying the red tracker deep underground.
"Let them follow that," Ron said coldly.
BANG.
Jax hit the rusted iron door again. This time, the metal hinges broke loudly. The heavy door fell flat on the ground. A long, dark tunnel was behind it.
"Go! Go! Go!" General Silas Vance ordered. He waved his huge hands.
Silas the hacker ran into the dark tunnel first. Vera the forger ran behind him. Isabella went next. General Vance stood by the broken door, holding his big gun, waiting for his King.
Ron was the last one to leave the War Room. He looked at the glowing screens and the maps on the tables. They had lost their base. The enemy was fast. But Ron smiled a small, dangerous smile. A good chess player never cries over a lost pawn.
Ron ran into the tunnel.
"Run hard!" Ron shouted. "Do not stop!"
They ran in the dark. The ground was wet and slippery. They ran for one minute. Two minutes. Their boots splashed in the muddy water. The air smelled like old dirt and fear.
Then, the world ended.
BOOM!
A massive explosion shook the earth. It was so loud it hurt their ears. The ground jumped up and down like a violent earthquake. A huge wave of hot air and thick gray dust shot down the tunnel. The heat pushed them forward, knocking Silas and Vera to the muddy floor.
Ron turned around. He saw bright orange fire fill the subway terminal behind them. The ceiling collapsed. Millions of pounds of rock and dirt fell down, totally crushing the tables, the computers, and the train cars.
If they had stayed for ten more seconds, they would be dead. They would be buried forever under the city.
The fire slowly died, leaving only thick dust and total darkness.
Ron coughed. He clicked his small flashlight on. The white beam cut through the dust.
"Is everyone alive?" Ron asked. His voice was calm.
"Yes, Sir," General Vance coughed, spitting dirt from his mouth.
Silas stood up, holding his backpack tightly. "I am okay. The data is safe."
Isabella leaned against the wet stone wall. She was breathing very hard. Her beautiful clothes were covered in mud. She looked at Ron. "They almost killed us, Ron. Marcus Thorne almost won."
"Marcus did not do this," Ron said softly. He wiped the dirt from his face. "Marcus is a coward. He uses lawyers and money. He does not use heavy bombs. Someone else sent the bombers. Someone who knows how I think."
Ron knew the truth. "The Director" was making a move. The mysterious man who forced Theresa to frame Ron five years ago was finally stepping out of the shadows.
"What do we do now?" General Vance asked. "We have no base. The police are hunting us. The bombers are hunting us."
Ron’s blue eyes were cold and sharp. His core struggle burned inside him. A normal man would run away. A normal man would hide. But Ron was the Apex. When the enemy hits you with a hammer, you do not cry. You cut off the enemy’s hand.
"We stay on the mission," Ron said. "We need to hit the supply chain. We need the lithium. Silas, can you connect to the internet down here?"
Silas nodded. He pulled a small tablet from his bag. He attached a wire to it. He typed very fast. "I am using a hidden satellite signal, Sir. I am in."
"Check the city port," Ron ordered. "Where is the Sea Dragon ship?"
Silas looked at the screen. His eyes went wide. "Sir! The ship is not at the port!"
"What?" General Vance growled.
"It arrived two hours early," Silas explained quickly. "Marcus Thorne changed the schedule. He knew we might attack the port. He already unloaded the lithium!"
"Where is it?" Ron asked. His voice was hard like iron.
Silas typed faster. "Marcus hired a private army. Blackwater Shield. They put the lithium into three heavy armored trucks. They left the port fifteen minutes ago. They are driving to the secret Sterling Tech warehouse outside the city."
"What road are they on?" Ron asked.
"Highway 9," Silas answered. "They are driving through the Blackwood Forest. It is a very dark, empty road. No cameras. No police."
Ron looked at General Vance.
"General," Ron said softly. "Call your men. Tell the Iron Legion to meet us at Highway 9."
The General smiled. His scarred face looked very scary in the flashlight beam. "We are going to rob the trucks, Sir?"
"No," Ron said. He started walking fast down the dark tunnel. "It is not a robbery if you take back what belongs to you. We are going to repossess my property. We are going to bleed Sterling Tech dry."

Silas quickly pushed the wireless keyboard across the desk. Ron placed his right hand on the keys. His left arm was still strapped tightly to his chest, throbbing with terrible pain. He had to type with one hand. Ron began to do the complex math in his head. He carried the ones. He divided the complex fractions. He worked backward from the Golden Ratio, flipping the numbers exactly the way Dr. Aris used to do when he wanted to trick his students on a final exam. 01:00."One minute, Sir," Silas whispered, terrified to break Ron’s concentration. Ron’s fingers moved across the keyboard. He typed a long string of numbers into the blank text box. 3.1415... "He combined the Golden Ratio with Pi," Ron muttered, his eyes glued to the screen. "He intertwined the two most perfect numbers to create a spiral code."Ron finished typing the long, twenty-digit answer. 00:30."Are you sure, Sir?" Silas asked, staring at the numbers in the box. "A machine only does exactly what you tell it to

Sitting in the corner, eating a small piece of stale bread, was Zero. The skinny, pale hacker looked up. His heavy mechanical goggles were resting on his forehead. "Zero," Ron commanded. "Bring me your backpack."Zero quickly dropped his bread. He grabbed his heavy, clinking metal backpack and ran over to Ron and Silas. He unzipped the bag. "Did you bring the silver hard drive from Sub-Level 4?" Ron asked. "Yes, Apex!" Zero squeaked proudly. He reached deep into the bag and pulled out the thick, heavy silver hard drive. "I pulled it right from the main console before we escaped the bomb."Ron took the hard drive. It was cool and heavy in his hand. This small block of metal held the last remaining secrets of The Director. "Plug it in, Silas," Ron ordered, handing the drive to the nervous hacker. "Let’s see what The Director was hiding."Silas took a deep breath. He took a thick black cable from his desk and plugged it into the silver hard drive. He connected the other end to his po
Chapter 48
Sitting on the floor inside the cage was Dr. Aris. The old man’s hands were tied tightly with plastic zip-ties. He looked weak, pathetic, and terrified. He had felt the massive shockwave of the explosion. He knew exactly what it meant. Ron stood in front of the metal bars. He stared down at his old teacher. "Do you see what your partners just did, Aris?" Ron asked. His voice was incredibly quiet, which made it far more terrifying than a shout. "They murdered three thousand men in cages."Dr. Aris swallowed hard. He could not look Ron in the eyes. He stared at his own shaking hands. "I... I told you, Ronald. The Syndicate does not leave loose ends. When a branch is compromised, they cut it off and burn it. The Director failed. You exposed Sterling Tech. So they erased everything connected to you.""They missed me," Ron said simply. "They will not miss again," Dr. Aris whispered, finally looking up. His eyes were wide with a crazy, desperate fear. "You do not understand their power,
Chapter 47
The massive shockwave hit the heavy armored truck like a solid wall of moving air. Inside the back cab, Ron Donaldo was thrown violently against the metal wall. His injured left shoulder hit the hard steel, sending a blinding flash of pure agony through his body. He gritted his teeth, refusing to scream. Silas, the hacker, was thrown completely out of his leather chair, crashing onto the floor in a tangle of computer wires. In the driver’s seat, General Silas Vance fought the steering wheel like a wild beast. The massive truck was lifted onto two wheels. The strong wind from the explosion pushed the heavy vehicle sideways across the wet highway. The thick tires screamed as they skidded over the black asphalt. "Hold on!" General Vance roared over the deafening noise. The General pulled the heavy steering wheel hard to the left, slamming his foot down on the brakes. The truck crashed back down onto all four wheels with a bone-shaking THUD. It slid for another hundred feet before fin

"It is a highly concentrated, fast-acting neurotoxin," the lawyer explained in a polite, professional voice. "If you swallow it, you will fall asleep in exactly thirty seconds. Your heart will stop. The medical examiner will record it as a massive heart attack brought on by the extreme stress of your arrest. It is completely painless."Marcus shook his head violently. "No! I will not take it! I will go to prison! I will survive!"The lawyer leaned forward. His dead eyes locked onto Marcus. "If you do not take the pill, Marcus," the lawyer whispered, "you will go to prison. And the Syndicate will make sure that your time in prison is the most agonizing, terrifying experience a human body can endure. You will pray for death every single day. And worse..."The lawyer turned to look at Theresa. "...the Syndicate will visit your families. Your mothers. Your siblings. We will burn their houses down with them inside. We will erase your entire bloodlines from the earth. That is the price of

"Marcus did!" Theresa shouted eagerly. She wanted to save herself. She wanted to throw Marcus under the bus. "Marcus met the Police Chief in a parking garage five years ago! He gave him a bag of diamonds to plant the fake evidence in Ron Donaldo’s car! I can give you the exact date and time! I wrote it down in my private diary!"Marcus stared at Theresa. His mouth hung open in pure shock. "You kept a diary of my crimes? You stupid, crazy woman! That is evidence!""I kept it to protect myself from you!" Theresa snapped back. Marcus lost his mind. All the fear, all the anger, all the complete humiliation exploded inside his brain. He forgot he was in an FBI building. He forgot the cameras were rolling. He only saw the woman who was sending him to prison forever. "I will kill you!" Marcus roared with the fury of a madman. Marcus leaped out of his metal chair. He threw his entire body across the table. His handcuffed hands reached out and grabbed Theresa tightly around the throat. Th
