“Arise, Draàl—Commander of Flames, Herald of the Dark Queen. Arise and fulfill your destiny as her chosen champion—the Crimson Knight!”
Ruby-red eyes flew open suddenly, glowing with power. Scanning around, Draàl noticed the change in scenery—the mist had become blue-green water that completely encompassed him, and the flames below had transformed into a murky, obscure mass drifting slowly beneath him. It didn’t take him long to realize that he’d returned to the river below the Brooklyn Bridge, where it all ended. And where his new life was set to begin. Summoning a powerful explosion from his hands, Draàl propelled himself out of the river like a rocket, with a great trail of fire forming behind him. He sliced efficiently through the air, traveling in a parabolic path as he began to descend swiftly. With as little as a grunt, he landed solidly on the bow end of a cruising yacht, tilting the ship and jolting the sunbathing occupants onboard. “What the blazes was that?” a blonde jock cried. He’d risen from his mat in a flash, his wide, bare chest glistening with sweat as he tore his sunglasses off to reveal surprised blue eyes. “Who the heck are you? And why’re you—?” “Clothes. You need clothes.” Draàl tilted his head slightly, clearly recognizing the quiet voice echoing in his mind. When a gust of wind tingled his skin, causing him to look down, he immediately understood the inward suggestion. “My, oh my,” a short-haired woman crooned, sitting on a separate mat and running hungry light-brown eyes over the unexpected visitor. “Now that’s something.” “Melisa!” the jock exclaimed. “It’s barely twelve hours into our honeymoon and you’re already gawking at a buck naked guy!” “It’s not my fault!” she claimed, looking up at her apparent husband. “You saw it—he just landed on the boat like freaking Superman. What was I supposed to do, Jason?” “How ‘bout trying not to look at him? That would definitely help. And… wait. Where are you going?” Jason directed the question at Draàl, who’d promptly left the arguing couple and was descending into the inner cabin of the yacht. “Clothes,” he said monotonously, without turning around. “I need clothes.” After he’d vanished below deck, Jason turned to his wife, who still looked flushed. “Do you think we should call the cops?” “Huh?” She jerked, pulling herself out of her fantasies. “The cops? Are you crazy? He hasn’t even done anything wrong. He just wants some clothes, surely we can help with that. Matter of fact, I should probably head in there and make sure he gets what he needs.” Jason gave Melisa a glare that would’ve melted a block of ice. “Don’t. You. Dare.” Below deck, Draàl had found the master bedroom, wasting no time to rummage through the open wardrobe. When he’d picked an outfit he thought was decent enough, he shut the door, only to find a full-length mirror attached to it. With only a minor hint of astonishment, he stared at his reflection for a while. Everything about him had changed. For starters, he stood much taller than he remembered. Then he noticed his hair—snow-white and long enough to perch on his shoulders. His skin appeared pale, almost gray, and full, dark eyebrows hovered above eyes as red as brilliant jewels, which emphasized the menacing appearance of his matured, sculpted face. His body had transformed into a work of art as well, with chiseled, robust muscles adding width to his intimidating frame. Even the shirt he’d thrown on did little to hide his physique. “Interesting,” he muttered, scarcely conscious of his deep voice as he flexed his right arm. “Indeed. Such is effect of the power which you now wield.” Draàl raised an eyebrow. “You. And how, if I may ask, did you find your way into my head?” “My objective wasn’t just to grant you your abilities,” the voice explained. “I am also meant to act as a guide in your quest.” “Hmm, I see. And I suppose you have a name?” “You may call me Zha’irah.” “Zha’irah,” Draàl repeated. “Definitely not a mouthful. So, what’s the plan now? How do I go about setting the Queen free?” “First, you must leave this vessel.” “Obviously.” “Then you will go to the very edge of the city, in the direction of the rising sun. There lies a man you must meet.” “Could’ve just said Queens.” Draàl took another long look in the mirror. Then he wheeled around and exited the bedroom. “Yeah, yeah,” Jason was saying, his phone pressed to his ear as he glanced over his shoulder cautiously. Then he groaned in frustration. “I’m telling you the truth, officer. He just showed up from nowhere. Falling out of the sky and stuff like an alien.” “Tsk,” Melisa shook her head. “If only you knew what you sounded like. I wouldn’t believe you either if I were the cops.” “There’s no need for that,” a deep voice droned behind them. They both spun around, facing the huge stranger who still looked bulky despite wearing Jason’s oversized black shirt and plain black pants. For some reason, though, his feet remained bare. “I’m already leaving,” he continued. “In which direction is the dock?” “That way,” Melisa squealed quickly, pointing towards her right. “But you’re more than welcome to stay. No need to leave in such a hurry.” Draàl said nothing. His gaze shifted from the brooding face of Jason and settled in the direction his wife gestured towards. Despite the distance, he could see the piers clearly, with choppy waves lapping on the platform’s vertical beams. “Enhanced vision,” he muttered. “That’s interesting.” “Amongst other abilities,” Zha’irah supplied. “You’ll get to learn how you use and synchronize them in the best way that suits you. Now, jump.” Pouring all his concentration into the heat forming in his palms and feet, he leapt overboard, breaking the surface of the water cleanly. Then, like a speeding missile, he thrusted himself forward underneath the surface of the river, shooting towards the direction of the docks. “Are you shitting me?” Jason gawked with wide eyes, his jaw hanging with disbelief. “Now he’s Aquaman?” Equally stunned, Melisa’s wordless reply to her husband was a brisk shrug.Latest Chapter
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
“Why was I permitted entry?” Minutes later, after the entrance above sealed shut and left everything in pitch blackness, Draàl used the fiery light from his ignited hands as he gradually descended the steps, which seemed to drop endlessly. “Why do you ask, Lord Draàl?” Zha’irah countered with a question of her own. He climbed down a few more steps before he answered. “Given how hidden the amulet must be, I expected the entrance to the cavern to be more… protected. Looks like I was wrong, and I wonder why.” “The doorway only activates when it detects the presence of rune aura,” Zha’irah explained. “While that means anyone with a Rune System can enter, it doesn’t necessarily mean they would make it to the amulet.” “If you survive its horrors,” Draàl recalled. “So that’s what you meant.” “Indeed,” she confirmed. “The sorcerer who hid the Blood Amulet knew it would eventually be sought out, no matter how protected it was. So he created a pocket realm tha
CHAPTER THIRTY
“Stop here.” The chauffeur obeyed Draàl’s command without question, bringing the large, black Cadillac to a halt on the side of the deserted street. They’d arrived in the Pueblo Libre district a few minutes before midnight, and for good reasons as well. In contrast to Valeria’s plan, which involved him breaking into the Larco museum with the help of her men, Draàl opted for something more subtle and discreet. To him, it was preferable to slip in and out undetected during closing hours, and it was even more so to do it alone. Sure, there were still guards and security cameras to deal with—among other protection measures the building might have—but he wasn’t deterred by that. If anything, he felt the hardest part wouldn’t be getting in but getting the amulet out. “Stay behind the wheel and keep the engine running,” Draàl instructed as he pushed the back door open. “Just in case we need to make a quick getaway.” “Understood, señor,” the chauffeur replied monotonously.
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
“What are you doing?” Valeria’s abrupt question carried the tone of panic as Draàl’s grip tightened around the blade with a new, unexpected burst of energy. He watched as the purple halo of Valeria’s rune aura faded rapidly from the sword, promptly replaced with the fiery-red of his own. Soon enough, the weapon burst into flames, creating a shockwave so powerful that Valeria was flung backwards. She quickly rebounded to her feet and drew a second gladius from a hidden compartment in her shield. But, even as she poised for another battle, she could feel it: the suffocating heat that enveloped the arena, threatening to scorch every single thing in its path. She couldn’t see Draàl’s intimidating rune aura, but she didn’t need a glimpse to know he’d become the equivalent of a miniature supernova at the moment—an angry supernova, to be exact. For a fleeting second, she wondered what Lucas’s charts would say about the phenomenon before her. Draàl extracted the gladius f
CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
“You want a fight, Mrs. Salazar? Very well, then. Have it your way.” Less than five minutes later, after a brief conversation in the battle arena, Valeria Salazar charged at Draàl with a battle cry, fully clad in her armor while wielding a sword and a shield. It was clear from her first swing that she wasn’t planning to go easy on her opponent, and Draàl was obliged to feel the same way. He weaved around her strikes at first, nearly caught off-guard by her alarming pace and impressive swordsmanship. Then, acting purely on impulse, he caught her sword by the blade just as she swung towards his neck, disarming her as he delivered a solid kick to her shield. Though she remained on her feet, the force was strong enough to send her sliding several yards backwards. Draàl dislodged the weapon from his hand, noticing blood trickling slowly from the shallow cut in his palm. In mere seconds, the wound closed up with a faint yellow glow, leaving no trace of its previous existence.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
“This is… incredible.” Valeria rolled her eyes at the excited tone of the balding man sitting before her. “What is it now, Lucas?” Wearing a dull-gray jumpsuit that matched his gray-blue eyes, Lucas Castillo turned in his chair and pushed his transparent-framed glasses up to the bridge of his nose with one hand. With the other, he pointed to the screen behind him, which displayed a flow chart with numerous data points and multiple red lines. “His energy readings, ma’am,” he explained with a stunned expression creasing his pudgy features. “They’ve hit new heights already, in just a matter of minutes. At this rate, there’d be no space on the chart to measure his progression.” As he rolled his revolving chair forward and began tapping away furiously on a white keyboard, he continued, “Thanks to the sensors within the arena, we can monitor his energy output and cross-reference it to the pent-up energy he has within, and the results are staggering.” Valeria pe
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
“Ugh,” Draàl groaned, wiping his lower lip with the back of his hand. “This makes no sense.” “I beg to differ, Lord Draàl,” Zha’irah opposed as she retracted the missile launchers into her shoulders. “It makes perfect sense to me.” Draàl gave the android a grim stare. “We’ve trained for three days, Zha’irah, and each day we’ve been at our necks for several hours. And every single time it looks like I’ve got the upper hand, you pull out a trump card from nowhere that knocks me out.” “Just like I did now, on the fourth day,” she gloated. Then, on a more serious note, she added, “Perhaps the fault is not from me—perhaps it is from you.” Draàl rose to his feet, sweeping aside his hair, which had spilled freely over his face and shoulders after the leather band finally broke from the last attack. “Feel free to tell me how any of this is my fault.” “You keep fighting like you know me, like you are aware of everything I can and cannot do. Yet, you fall when I su
