Daniel Cho broke his silence on the second morning, though not in the way anyone in the observation room had expected. He didn't ask for a lawyer. He didn't demand a deal. He simply looked up when Osei entered the interrogation room, glanced past him toward the one-way mirror with the unnerving certainty of a man who knew exactly who was standing behind it, and said, "I'll talk to Jin Rae. No one else."

"That's not how this works," Osei said.

"It's how it works today, Captain, or I say nothing

"I should probably go," he said, though he made no actual move to stand, the couch's cushions considerably more comfortable than the prospect of walking home on ribs that had barely stopped aching."You should probably stay," Yuna countered, studying him with an expression that suggested she'd already decided the matter regardless of what he actually said next. "You're injured. It's late and frankly, I don't trust you to take proper care of yourself once you're back in that apartment alone.""I've managed on my own before.""Managing and actually resting are different things, and you strike me as someone who's terrible at the second one." She stood, already moving toward the kitchen with the particular brisk determination he was beginning to recognize as entirely characteristic of her when she'd decided something needed doing. "Stay. Let me take care of you tonight."He let himself be persuaded, partly because arguing felt like more effort than his aching body currently had to spare,

He hadn't intended to see Yuna that evening, exhaustion and bruised ribs making the idea of anything beyond his own bed considerably more appealing than a visit across the city but she'd heard, somehow, through whatever network of gossip still trickled from the department to families like hers, that something had gone wrong at the transit hub, and her message arrived before he'd even finished icing his shoulder.'Please tell me you're all right. I heard there was an incident downtown.'He went, because refusing felt, after everything the day had cost, like exactly the kind of careful management he'd promised weeks ago to stop practicing. She met him at the estate's door herself again, and her relief at seeing him upright and walking under his own power was visible enough that she nearly embraced him before catching herself, settling instead for gripping his arm with more force than her usual composed restraint typically allowed."You're limping," she said, studying him with sharp, wor

"For what it's worth," he said, helping her to her feet with careful, deliberate slowness, "you hit considerably harder than I expected. I'm fairly certain that rib you cracked earlier is going to remind me of this for a week."Jin Rae winced, though something in the exhaustion of her expression allowed a faint, reluctant smile through despite everything. "I cracked a rib?""Possibly two. I stopped counting after the fourth strike." He tested his shoulder gingerly, wincing at the deep ache still radiating through it. "You should know, for future reference, that whatever Xian fed you, it made you meaner than usual. And you were already fairly formidable to begin with.""That's not funny, Han.""I'm allowing myself one joke," he said. "I've earned it."She huffed something that might have been a laugh under different circumstances, then sobered almost immediately, her expression clouding as the reality of what had happened settled fully back into place. "I could have killed you.""You d

She advanced through the settling dust with the same relentless, mechanical precision, weapon rising toward him where he'd slid against the rusted rail car, and in the fractured half-second before she closed the distance entirely, something surfaced through the haze of pain and depleted reserves — a memory, small and specific, of a plain cord and a cheap enamel pendant looped around his mother's neck weeks earlier.'I made another one,' he thought suddenly, urgently. 'I kept it. For Yuna. It's still in my coat.'He'd carried it for days, uncertain of the right moment to give it, the small talisman tucked into an inner pocket out of habit rather than deliberate plan and now, watching Jin Rae's weapon level toward him with cold, borrowed strength, he understood, with sudden clarity, that it hadn't been meant for Yuna at all. Not yet. Not until this moment demanded it.~[QUERY: TALISMAN APPLICATION — UNTESTED AGAINST ACTIVE POSSESSION.]~'It's what I have,' he thought back, already movin

  • Chapter 46

She closed the final distance faster than he'd anticipated, and the first strike caught him across the jaw before he'd fully registered her movement a blow considerably harder than her frame should have produced, carrying a strength that felt borrowed, amplified, fed by whatever Xian had planted beneath her conscious will.He stumbled back, tasting blood, and raised both hands defensively rather than striking back. "Jin Rae, I'm not fighting you."She didn't answer. Her second strike came low, aimed at his ribs, and he twisted just enough to absorb it rather than deflect it outright, unwilling to counter with anything approaching real force. The blow still landed hard enough to steal his breath, her strength considerably beyond anything she'd shown in training, beyond anything her ordinary body should have carried.~[WARNING: SUBJECT OPERATING UNDER EXTERNAL COMPULSION. PHYSICAL OUTPUT SIGNIFICANTLY AMPLIFIED.]~'I know,' he thought grimly, backing another step as she pressed forward

The maintenance shaft descended considerably deeper than the plans had suggested, a narrow, rust-streaked stairwell that dropped past the modern transit system entirely into the old convergence point's forgotten architecture. He followed Jin Rae down at a pace that felt, uncomfortably, like chasing rather than accompanying her — her urgency having sharpened into something reckless the moment Warrick's radio call confirmed movement, two figures descending exactly where the resonance had begun spiking."Slow down," he called after her, voice low but urgent, echoing faintly against the shaft's rusted walls. "We don't know what's waiting down there. Osei said surveillance...""Osei's plan assumed we had twenty-four hours," she shot back, not slowing at all. "We don't. If Xian's people are already moving equipment, waiting means giving him exactly the time he needs.""I agree. I'm not saying wait. I'm saying we go together, carefully...""I am being careful." She reached the bottom of the
