The silence of the gardens was no longer a refuge; it was a shroud. Mira retreated into the obsidian shadows of the cloisters, her breath hitching in her chest. She had seen it all—the way Vaelric looked at Elara, the way his resolve seemed to bend beneath the weight of that haunting, lavender-scented past. She felt a phantom ache in her own heart, a cold, sharp thing that warned her: He is slipping away.

Vaelric, oblivious to the storm brewing in the darkness behind him, sprinted through the labyrinthine lower levels of the Academy. The crown pulsed rhythmically against his skull, a jagged beat that synchronized with the erratic thrum of a power he had spent his life fleeing. He reached the subterranean vents, the air thick with the metallic tang of ozone and rot. He followed the trail of the frequency, a lingering wake of stolen vitality that only he could perceive.

He slipped through a narrow grate, dropping into a vaulted chamber beneath the foundations. There, standing amidst a circle of glowing, crystalline pylons, was Lucien.

"You’re late," Lucien said, his voice echoing against the cold stone. He wasn't looking at the doorway, but at the air before him.

Vaelric pressed himself against a support pillar, his hand trembling as he reached for his blade. He watched as Lucien reached out, his hand glowing with that sickening, familiar violet hue. A prisoner, slumped against the base of a pillar, shivered violently as their essence was forcibly drawn out, turning into a stream of iridescent mist that spiraled into Lucien’s palm.

"I didn't think you’d actually show up, brother," Vaelric whispered to himself, his skin crawling with disgust.

Lucien laughed, a dry, hollow sound that lacked any trace of humanity. "It’s efficient, isn't it? The way the life force simply... obeys."

Vaelric’s jaw tightened. "You’re killing them. All of them."

"I’m curating them," Lucien corrected, his gaze drifting to the shadows. "The weak are meant to be fuel for the strong. You know that better than anyone, Vaelric. You were born with the crown, yet you spent your life wallowing in the mud like an animal."

"I’m not an animal," Vaelric growled, though he kept his voice suppressed, his eyes darting to the heavy, armored guards standing like statues at the room’s perimeter.

"You’re a waste of potential," Lucien continued, pacing the length of the altar. "Mother and Father thought you were the salvation. They thought the 'chosen one' would bridge the gap. But look at you—hiding in the dark, skulking about like a thief."

Vaelric watched the agonizing process unfold. The victim, a young girl from the lower wards, let out a soft, mewling sound before falling completely silent, her skin turning grey as she crumbled into ash. The cruelty of it burned through Vaelric’s restraint.

"How does it feel?" Vaelric murmured, his voice trembling with a mix of fury and sorrow. "Does their fear taste like success?"

"It tastes like progress," Lucien replied, turning his back to the altar. "The Pale Regent requires a steady supply. This bridge won't sustain itself on ambition alone. It needs soul-fire."

"You’re a monster, Lucien."

"I’m an architect," Lucien countered, a sneer curling his lip. "History will call me a savior while you remain a footnote in a diary no one will ever read."

Suddenly, the floor beneath Vaelric’s feet groaned. A stray drop of sweat hit the stone, making a sound like a gunshot in the near-dead silence. The guards turned, their helmets gleaming under the flickering aether-lights.

"There's someone in the rafters," one of the guards boomed, his hand snapping to his heavy, serrated blade.

"Search the perimeter," Lucien commanded, his voice bored. "And bring me whoever is hiding. I’m in a mood for a little interrogation."

Vaelric ducked lower, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. Think, he commanded himself. If you fight, you reveal your resonance. If you run, they track you.

He caught a glimpse of a shadow shifting near the entrance—a silhouette he recognized instantly. Mira. She was there, her blade drawn, her posture a testament to a desperate, singular loyalty.

"Don't," he whispered, knowing she couldn't hear him but praying his will would somehow reach her.

He gripped the hilt of his sword, the cold metal grounding him. He looked toward the center of the room, where Lucien stood, his back turned, oblivious to the encroaching storm.

"You think you’re in control, brother?" Lucien shouted to the empty, cavernous room, his voice rising in volume. "You think the crown is your burden? It’s your destiny. You’re just too cowardly to accept the crown’s call."

"I’m never taking it," Vaelric breathed, his knuckles white.

The guards began to march toward his position, their heavy boots crushing the fine layer of dust on the floor. The sound was rhythmic, mechanical, and terrifying. Vaelric felt the crown thrumming, an insistent, hungry vibration that demanded he release the energy and turn this entire room into a tomb.

"Easy now," he murmured to the darkness inside his own mind. "Not yet."

Just as the lead guard neared the pillar, a small, obsidian sphere rolled from the shadows near the entrance. It burst into a thick, swirling cloud of alchemical smoke, filling the chamber with a blinding, white haze.

"Intruders!" a guard screamed.

"Find them!" Lucien commanded, his voice echoing with annoyance.

Vaelric seized the opening. He moved with a speed that blurred the air around him, slipping past the guards like a whisper. He reached the back of the chamber, just out of sight, his pulse racing with adrenaline. He looked back one final time, his eyes wide with horror as Lucien began to laugh, his hands rising to call upon a power that felt ancient and wrong.

Suddenly, a massive, flickering projection shimmered into existence above the altar—a tall, robed figure with eyes like dying stars. The Pale Regent.

"The work proceeds, Lucien?" the projection asked, its voice vibrating through the very foundation of the building.

"It nears completion, my Lord," Lucien replied, dropping to one knee. "The vessel will be mine soon. I just need to break his spirit first."

"Break him," the Regent echoed, the words chilling the air. "The bridge requires a broken king, not a fractured ghost."

Vaelric felt the world tilt. The weight of his own identity—the crown, the bloodline, the tragedy of his lineage—all converged on that single, terrifying sentence. He wasn't just a survivor anymore. He was the final piece of their horrific puzzle, and they were ready to carve him out of the world to get it.

"But she was just a woman, Silas. How could she build something that even the Regent fears?"Silas paused, turning to face him. Her expression was devoid of the cold professional distance she had worn earlier. "Because she knew the math, Vaelric. She didn't just understand the bridge; she understood the hunger that fueled it. You see, the Regent thinks the crown is a tool. Your mother knew it was a cage."Mira moved closer to Vaelric, her hand seeking his. She laced her fingers through h
