Chapter 1: The 1% Threshold
Chapter 1: The 1% Threshold
The world didn’t end with a bang or a whimper; it ended with the sound of a vacuum cleaner being switched on in the next room.
Ethan stared at his apartment wall as the gray fog bled through the drywall like ink in water. His neighbor, Mr. Henderson, had been shouting about his missing cat a second ago. Now, there was only the hum of the Void.
[System Initializing…]
[Connection Quality: Critical.]
[Current Love Level: 1%.]
Ethan grabbed his coat, his hands trembling. The blue light of the status window felt cold, mocking him.
"One percent? Are you serious?" Ethan muttered, his voice cracking. "That’s basically zero. That’s 'I hate you' territory."
He scrambled toward his front door, throwing it open to the hallway. The gray fog was already licking at his baseboards.
"Hey! Is anyone out there?" Ethan shouted, his voice echoing into the nothingness.
"Don't go out there!"
The voice came from the fire escape landing. A girl—Clara—was huddled against the railing, her face pale as a ghost’s.
"Clara? The neighbor from 4B?" Ethan lunged toward her. "You’re still here? Everything is turning to dust!"
"I’m still here, unfortunately," Clara snapped, though her eyes were wide with terror. "Why are you running toward the gray, you idiot? Do you want to be deleted?"
"I’m running toward a human! Look at this screen!" Ethan thrust his hand out, showing her the floating, translucent display. "My Love Level is one percent. The system says I’m disconnected. If I’m alone when the fog hits, I’m gone."
Clara squinted at the blue projection, then at him. "One percent? Ouch. I’ve got twelve percent. You’re really that unlikable?"
"It’s not about being unlikable! I’m a freelancer, I work from home, and I order groceries online. I haven't talked to a human in three days!"
"So you’re a hermit. That makes sense." Clara slid down the wall, clutching her chest. "The fog is getting closer. My screen says if I drop to zero, I fade out."
"That’s exactly what happened to Henderson," Ethan said, his breathing hitching. "He went gray right in front of me."
"Sit down," Clara commanded, pointing to the floor beside her. "If the logic is about connection, maybe proximity helps. Get over here."
Ethan scrambled to her side, his shoulder brushing against hers. He felt a jolt of static electricity, and the blue text flickered.
[Connection Quality: Improving.]
[Love Level: 2%.]
"Two percent," Ethan exhaled, his heart hammering against his ribs. "It went up. Just by sitting here."
"Great. Only ninety-eight more to go before we’re soulmates," Clara said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Don't get any ideas, freelancer."
"I’m not looking for a date, I’m looking for survival. Why are you so calm?"
"I’m not calm. I’m just waiting for the inevitable," Clara replied. She looked at the encroaching gray mist swallowing the stairwell. "My parents? Gone. My cat? Gone. The whole city? Empty."
"We’re not empty," Ethan insisted, leaning closer to her.
"You’re just desperate. You’d probably hug a cactus right now if it promised to raise your percentage."
"Maybe. Is it working?"
"Stop checking your screen every five seconds, you’re making me nervous."
Ethan watched the numbers. They were hovering now.
"We need to talk," he said. "About anything. Real things. What's your favorite color?"
"Are you kidding? The world is ending and you're asking me my favorite color?"
"It’s the only way to build a connection! The system reads intent, right? Or maybe it reads rapport. Talk to me."
"Fine. Blue. Like that stupid screen."
[Love Level: 3%.]
"It moved! Blue, huh? I like blue too. See? We have something in common."
"We have a lot in common, Ethan. We’re both losers sitting in a hallway waiting for the end of the world."
"I prefer 'survivors'."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night."
Clara shifted, her arm pressing firmly against his. Her skin was warm, a sharp contrast to the biting cold of the creeping fog. Ethan felt a strange, sudden ache in his chest—not of fear, but of gratitude.
"You're shaking," Clara noted, her voice dropping the sarcasm for a fleeting second.
"I'm terrified, Clara. I thought I was fine being alone. I really did."
"Nobody is fine being alone, Ethan. We’re just good at pretending."
"Is that why your level was twelve percent?"
"I have a sister," Clara whispered. "She was on the phone with me when the fog hit. We were arguing about Christmas plans. She vanished mid-sentence."
Ethan didn't know what to say. He reached out, his hand hovering before settling on her arm. He didn't want to comfort her; he wanted to keep her from vanishing.
[Love Level: 5%.]
"It’s rising faster," Ethan noted, his voice hushed. "It likes physical contact."
"Don't get cocky," she warned, though she didn't pull away.
"I'm not. I just... thank you. For not being a hallucination."
"Don't thank me yet. We're still stuck in a fire escape."
"We're stuck together," Ethan said.
"That's exactly what I'm worried about."
A sudden, sharp screech echoed through the hallway, vibrating the metal railings. It sounded like grinding teeth, hungry and wet. The gray fog surged forward, coalescing into a tall, jagged silhouette at the far end of the corridor.
Ethan’s breath hitched. The monster was featureless, a void-black nightmare that seemed to absorb the light around them.
"What is that?" Clara hissed, her fingernails digging into Ethan’s sleeve.
"I think... I think it’s the thing that eats the lonely," Ethan said, his voice a tremor of pure panic.
The creature’s head snapped toward them, its presence pinning them to the wall. It didn't have eyes, but it definitely saw the connection between them. It lurched forward, its movements jagged and glitchy, like a corrupted video file.
"Ethan," Clara whispered, her grip tightening until her knuckles turned white.
"Hold onto me," he said, his heart racing. "Don't let go."
As their hands locked together, the system let out a deafening chime.
[Warning: High-Value Connection Detected. Aggro Level: Maximum.]
The creature shrieked, a sound that shattered the nearby window, and lunged.

Chapter 50: The Shearing of the Ewes"If you tell me that pinning down a three-hundred-pound horned ram whose primary life ambition appears to be headbutting my ribs into fine powder is 'just a wonderful, character-building bonding exercise to help us appreciate the true value of home textiles,' Ethan, I am going to take these heavy, blood-dulled iron shears, snip every single thread of your favorite winter trousers while you're fast asleep, and leave you to explain your naked, wool-less predicament to the entire visiting trade delegation from the southern coast," Clara snapped, her voice cutting sharply through the dusty, pungent air of the eastern corral like a razor-sharp scythe as she aggressively planted her heavy boot against a balking ewe's hindquarters with enough force to send a shower of dried manure and loose straw spraying straight across Ethan’s mud-stained knees.Ethan didn't flinch, though a slow, infuriating grin spread across his grime-streaked face as he casually shi

Chapter 49: The Three-Day Drive"If you tell me that herding a dozen frantic, half-wild mountain sheep through a narrow, boulder-strewn canyon while a horned ram the size of a hay bale glares at us like we just insulted his entire ancestral line is 'just a delightful little afternoon stroll to test our cardiovascular endurance,' Ethan, I am going to take our very last roll of homespun wool, wrap you tightly from neck to ankle like an oversized winter sausage, and roll you straight down this limestone chute so you can personally negotiate grazing rights with the local wolf pack," Clara snapped, her voice cutting sharply through the dusty, echoing air of the southern canyon like a honed blade as she aggressively waved a frayed hempen jacket in the face of a bolting ewe with enough force to send a thick cloud of dry, choking dust swirling directly across Ethan’s sweat-streaked forehead.Ethan didn't flinch, though a slow, infuriating grin spread across his dust-covered face as he casuall

Chapter 48: The Corral"If you tell me that hacking forty-eight dead-straight, six-inch-thick cedar posts out of a freezing, root-choked swamp while a swarm of ferocious blackflies treats my neck like an open market stall is 'just a delightful little upper-body conditioning routine to prepare us for the winter solstice,' Ethan, I am going to take our very last preserved jar of wild blackberry preserves, empty the entire contents directly over your freshly washed hair, and let the local bears handle our domestic scheduling negotiations for the next three weeks," Clara snapped, her voice cutting sharply through the humid, insect-choked air of the eastern timberline like a whetted razor as she aggressively wrenched a heavy, mud-caked felling axe out of a stubborn tree stump with enough force to send a massive spray of dark, stagnant water droplets flying straight across Ethan’s chest.Ethan didn't flinch, though a slow, infuriating grin spread across his sweat-streaked face as he casuall

SURVIVAL LOVE SYSTEM Chapter 47: The Mountain Flock
Chapter 47: The Mountain Flock"If you tell me that scaling an eighty-degree vertical wall of crumbling limestone while carrying thirty pounds of salted mutton, a rusted pair of iron shears, and a hempen net that smells faintly of an unwashed badger den is 'just a refreshing little alpine hike to stretch our calves and enjoy the panoramic autumn foliage,' Ethan, I am going to take every single length of newly twisted rope we spent the entire week crafting, tie you securely to the highest pine branch on this windswept ridge, and leave you here to discuss the finer points of altitude sickness with the local hawks," Clara snapped, her voice cutting sharply through the thin, biting mountain air like a whetted obsidian blade as she aggressively drove the iron spike of her climbing staff into a stubborn crack in the gray rock with enough force to send a small, clattering cascade of loose shale bouncing down the steep slope directly toward Ethan’s right boot.Ethan didn't flinch, though a sl
