Chapter 2: The Price of Affection

The creature lunged, a blur of oily static and jagged teeth. Ethan didn't think; he reacted. He shoved Clara behind him, grabbing a heavy, rusted fire extinguisher from the wall bracket as the monster’s claw raked the air where his face had been a millisecond before.

"Get down!" Ethan screamed, swinging the canister with every ounce of his adrenaline-fueled desperation.

It connected with the creature's midsection with a sound like a wet car crash. The monster shrieked—a sound of rending metal—and skidded back, flickering in and out of reality.

"Behind the stairwell!" Clara shouted, grabbing his jacket. "The door to the maintenance basement! Move!"

They scrambled, boots thundering against the metal grating. Ethan slammed his shoulder into the heavy steel door, Clara sliding through first, then him. He hauled the door shut just as a claw punched through the frame, ripping through the heavy iron like paper.

"Barricade it! Now!" Clara yelled.

Ethan shoved a heavy industrial shelving unit against the door. He slumped against it, chest heaving, listening to the monster scratching, tearing, and wailing on the other side.

"You’re alive," Ethan gasped, staring at her in the dim light of the basement.

Clara leaned against a concrete pillar, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "Barely. You almost got your head taken off, you reckless idiot."

"I saved us, didn't I?"

"You got lucky. Don't make a habit of trying to play hero when we’re one mistake away from becoming static."

"I wasn't playing. I was protecting the source of my life support."

"Is that all I am? Life support?"

Ethan looked at the screen floating in the air.

[Love Level: 7%.]

"You’re a person, Clara. I’m just... I’m freaking out, okay? Being alone for three days almost killed me. This thing? This thing is just the final nail."

Clara walked over, her eyes softening as she watched the flickering blue numbers. "Seven percent. We’re actually doing it."

"It’s not enough. That thing outside—it’s getting stronger. Or hungrier."

"It’s both. Did you hear how it sounded? Like it was mocking us."

"It sounded like hunger," Ethan corrected, his voice dropping. "My neighbor, Mr. Henderson? I think it was him. Or what was left of him."

Clara shuddered, rubbing her arms. "Don't say that. Don't turn the monsters into people."

"Why not? If this is a game, and the currency is love, doesn't it make sense that the enemy is the void of connection?"

"You talk like a philosopher for a guy who just swung a fire extinguisher like a caveman."

"A caveman who’s currently at seven percent love with the only person in the world," Ethan countered, a weak grin forming. "Want to tell me another secret? Maybe it’ll boost the signal."

Clara paced the small room, her shadow dancing against the concrete. "I’m not a fan of sharing, Ethan."

"We’re in a basement. The world is ending. What could possibly be worse than the truth?"

"I’m a coward," she said, stopping mid-stride. "That sister I mentioned? She didn't just vanish while we were talking about Christmas. I hung up on her. I told her I didn't want to hear about her life anymore. I was jealous of her, and I was petty, and that was the last thing I ever said to her."

Ethan felt his throat tighten. "Clara—"

"No, don't pity me. It’s the truth. I’m a terrible person, and now the universe is deleting everyone who’s as miserable as I am."

"If you were a terrible person, you would have left me on that fire escape."

"Maybe I just didn't want to die alone."

"But you’re not alone."

Ethan stepped closer. He saw the shift in the air, the way her eyes locked onto his.

[Love Level: 10%.]

"Ten percent," he whispered. "You’re not a coward. You’re human. And you’re still here."

"Does that count as progress?"

"It feels like it."

Clara looked up at him, her expression a mix of exhaustion and something sharper. "You’re really going to hold me to this until we reach one hundred, aren't you?"

"I don't plan on dying today, Clara. Do you?"

"Not if I can help it."

She reached out, tentatively placing her hand over his. Her touch was warm, electric. The blue screen pulsed, brighter than before.

[Love Level: 15%.]

"It’s getting warmer," she murmured, her voice losing its edge. "Is that... is that the connection?"

"I think so. It feels like... like being plugged into a wall."

"Don't compare me to an outlet, Ethan."

"I’m trying to say it’s grounding. You’re grounding me."

"Shut up," she said, though she stepped closer, pressing her shoulder against his. "Just stay here. Don't move."

"I’m not going anywhere."

"You’d better not. If you fade out before I do, I’m going to be very annoyed."

"I'll make sure to stick around."

Suddenly, the air in the room grew heavy. The temperature plummeted. A low, rhythmic thumping began—not from the door they had barricaded, but from the floorboards beneath their feet.

"Do you hear that?" Clara whispered, her grip on his hand turning white-knuckled.

"It's not just one," Ethan said, eyes wide. "The connection. It’s a beacon. We didn't just get stronger; we got louder."

[Warning: Void Stalker Swarm Detected.]

[Aggro Level: Exponential.]

"Ethan," Clara gasped, pointing to the ceiling.

Dark, viscous mist began to seep through the vents, coiling like snakes. The light in the room sputtered and died. The scratching sound from the door changed—it was no longer a single beast. It was dozens. A chorus of static shrieks filled the room.

"They're coming through the vents," Ethan yelled, pulling her toward the back corner, away from the encroaching gray.

"The barricade!" Clara shouted over the rising din. "The door is shaking!"

The heavy steel door groaned. The shelving unit slid an inch. Then two.

"They’re pushing!" Ethan scrambled to find a weapon, but there was nothing left but his own hands. "Clara, look at the screen! What does it say?"

[Love Level: 20%.]

[System Status: Overloaded.]

"It says it's overloaded! What does that even mean?" she screamed.

"It means we’re attracting everything in the radius!"

The door flew off its hinges, sent spinning across the room by a surge of black shadow. A dozen, no, twenty silhouettes crowded the entrance—featureless, glitching, and hungry.

"Ethan!"

The floor gave way, the concrete turning to dust under the pressure of the swarm. As the ground crumbled, Ethan grabbed Clara by the waist, bracing for the fall, but as they plummeted into the dark, the screen exploded into a blinding, radiant gold.

The barricade behind them shattered into a thousand jagged pieces of memory, and as the floor vanished completely, the wall of shadows surged forward to swallow them whole.

"Don't let go!" Ethan shouted into the void.

"I won't!" Clara shrieked back.

But as their hands slipped, the screen flashed one final, terrifying message.

[Love Level: 21%.]

[Connection Severed.]

"You’re making a mistake. You’re letting the system write your ending."Ethan ignored the voice in his head and lunged for the terminal. His hands passed through the solid light as if it were water, but the friction was enough to ground him. He grabbed the edge of the cage. "I'm not following any script, Clara. That’s the grand design?""Subject 403," the intercom chirped, the voice smooth and oily. "Report to the suite. Your partner is currently undergoing optimization. You are advised to comply."Ethan spun around, his eyes darting across the polished floor. "Optimization? Don't you dare touch her. You hear me?""Compliance is the only path to stability, Ethan.""I don't want stability. I want out."He sprinted toward the nearest hallway, his boots thundering against the tiles. He reached for a heavy fire door, but his hand stopped mid-air as a shadow peeled itself off the wall.

"Clara, please tell me you see a desk or a door or something, not a software update."Clara slammed her palm against the console, her face tight with a desperate, sharp focus. "I see a security override, you idiot. The floor is vanishing, the building is eating itself, and you’re worried about the UI?""I’m worried that we’re in a trap!""We’ve been in a trap since we met, Ethan! Now, move! The floor is literally liquefying!"The steel floorboards beneath them groaned, turning into gray, viscous sludge. A mechanical whir echoed from the ceiling—the sound of automated defense turrets shifting into position."Oh, perfect," Ethan muttered, ducking as a laser grid began to paint the walls in aggressive, jagged red lines. Ethan wheezed, pushing himself up.Clara scrambled back, checking her limbs. "I’m here. My legs still work. Why are we not deleted yet?"Ethan looked up. The hole in the ceiling was wide, but the monsters weren't dropping down.
